Ladies and Gentlemen. I am writing to ask about a special ledger that I found while going through my recently deceased grandmothers books and papers.
It is a handwritten diary by my great great great grandfather Charles A Willison to his daughter Mae. He was a member of the 76th Ohio Army Infantry, and it is a written account of the entire 3 years of service that he went through from 1862-1865. It accounts Gen. Sherman's special orders, details every battle (Vicksburg, Atlanta, etc), in the trenches with friends etc. The book was printed and only a few copies made (one was included in the box I found) and severley abridged and was entitled Reminiscences of a boy's service with the 76th Ohio, in the Fifteenth Army Corps (1908). Would this original ledger be of any value to anyone, besides me? Also, there are pictures and personal letters included as well. I just don't know what I should do with such a special piece of American history, it is such a detailed account of every battle from the eyes of a soldier. Anything you have to say would be of great value.
Thank You
Shaundra

Concerning the original diary. You should make copies of that material and send those copies to the Ohio Historical Society and Western Reserve Historical Society. Although his book can be found in a number of archives, the original material would be of interest as it contains more material. The letters etc should also be copied and sent. This would ensure that this material is never lost, and that the public has access to it.

Great that you have the collection!!!
Send copies to the Ohio Historical Society.
Keep originals in the family if possible.
I would pay postage and copying costs for copies of the pics & collection. Had relative in the 76th O.

Best regards

Hello Shaundra,

What an amazing find!  I would suggest that the Ohio Historical Society would really love to have a copy of this for their Ohio regimental archives. You can contact John Haas there and work with him as to how that can be arranged.

Also, you might send a copy to someone that might be interested in editing it for publication.  With the Civil War sesquicentennial ongoing this would be a wonderful contribution to the history of the war.  There is a lot of interest in the thoughts and words of soldiers for both sides.  I know of a couple respected historians in Ohio that might like to take this on as a book project.

I hope this helps.

My G-G Uncle who served in the 67th OVI had a diary that was sold at auction and purchased by the Ohio Historical Society for over $1100.
Here is his Find-A-Grave site which has some excerpts from his diary.

Shaundra,

If you have not found a home for this piece of history, I suggest you  consider donating it to the DAR Library I Washington, D. C.  It is one of the largest genealogical libraries.  They  would make sure it is shared, but also preserved.

Shaundra,

I would keep it closer to home and donate it to the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus which has a tremendous Civil War archive already.  Another location would be the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, also the home of a huge Civil War archvie.

Shaundra,

Another Ohio suggestion would be the Rutherford B.Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont Ohio, www.rbhayes.org/
They have an excellent research library there.

I thought as much... But the DAR died do a good job of conserving and also making their resources available to the public.

My Great Grand-Uncle Levi McConkey had a diary (which I was not aware of) and someone took it to an auction. I believe it was sold by Cowan's Auction. They weren't sure who was in the photos so I wrote and sent them a couple of pictures of Uncle Levi to confirm it was him.

Here's a link to his FAG: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=299711&GRid=8860401&

You might want to make copies of some of the pages.

This response is to "Shaundra" whose post was near the beginning of this thread and was dated 2013.  In that post she describes a diary:
It is a handwritten diary by my great great great grandfather Charles A Willison to his daughter Mae. He was a member of the 76th Ohio Army Infantry, and it is a written account of the           entire 3 years of service that he went through from 1862-1865.
Shaundra - did you decide what to do with this diary and is it now in a public place where it can be viewed.  My great-grandfather served in Company C of the 76th OVI.  I would be interested to see if he was either mentioned or pictured or both in the diary.
