Since the pension papers are expensive, I have two suggestions.  Check his profile on ancestry.com and see if anyone has added his pension papers to the gallery.  And, two, check with the local historians office where he lived in case they have a file on him.  I got lucky with one of my ancestors and found his pension papers in a family file in the historians office.   It will take you a bit longer to find out the information and you may not have any luck, but if you do get lucky, you will have saved $100.
