Since the gamedev group on meetup.com seems to be completely dead,
let's get some regularly scheduled meetups going with this group.
That way, we can discuss talents, find projects, etc in person (where
it's a lot easier to make these sort of connections). Plus, we can
all show off our various projects we're working on, or simply talk
about the future of indie games in Ohio.

From what I know, the current limitation is a lack of space to hold
the meetings, and possibly a lack of time to organize everything. I'm
pretty sure we could meet at Panera or something, at the very least,
so the biggest issue is getting someone to organize everything.

Any volunteers?

Hey Todd,

I'm with you on getting another meeting going. I just
checked the site and realized that you posted the last
suggestion for a meeting in May. The last time I went to one
for "The Columbus Ohio Game Development Meetup Group,"
Steve Castro hosted it at Panera. It was great but crowded.
I know that when we went to the IGDA chapters (which I hope
to have another one soon too haha), one of the members
offered the meeting room at his business. I cannot remember
his name (I'm terrible with names) nor do I have his business
card handy. However, the last thing I want to do is barge in
and just ask if we can use it for the meet up group unless, he
understands and agrees that it could provide a great opportunity
for game development in Ohio. Ian Schreiber may know who
I'm talking about and I will ask him.

As for organizing the event, I'll contact Steve Castro to see if he's
interested in another meeting. Once I've got a clearer idea of my
status in Ohio (student or job placement), I would like to help
organize events. It's a little hard to say what will happen as of now.
This week and next may be a little hard for me to help out but
early August may be better for me as I refocus on gaming and
finish my commissions.

By the way, how many people know about this group? Are
there more people that we can get on here?

You can reserve a meeting room at any public library.

Hey guys, I'm new here. I think I can help out. Why don't we start a
new group on meetup and a blog/website to attract people? Meeting at a
restaurant like Panera is a smart thing for the first few times at
least I think. What do you guys say?

I don't think we're having any trouble recruiting people so far, but
we can use meetup.com if that's the way people would prefer to find
out about and rsvp to a meeting.

Wes: The person who offered to host IDGA stuff is Trane DePriest (from
people to my site). I have contacted him and Steve Castro in an
attempt to get another meetup to happen, but have not received any
replies. As for how many people know about this group, the current
membership is 49 people, which is about half the size of the
meetup.com group that Steve runs.

As for using meetup.com, part of the issue is that it costs $100 a
year to host a group. That, plus the fact that, ideally, we don't
want to 'compete' with Steve Castro's group are sort of the reasons
behind not using it, I believe. Really, the best option would be to
be able to use the group Steve Castro already made for meetups.
Either by gaining the ability to create meetups there, or simply by
being given the group itself. Unfortunately, Steve Castro has
disappeared off the face of the earth, and a few people here have made
attempts to contact him with little to no success.

Finally, I'm not sure if we have enough content for a blog or website
just yet. Ideally, we will in the future.

Great idea, Todd. I will be going out of town through part of the
first week of August, but would be interested in a meetup after that.

I know that the Columbus Public Library has some large rooms that I
believe are free. The first PyOhio Conference, in 2008, was organized
there. I can explore the details. How many are in the group?

Ok, so we definitely have the interest, and there's plenty of
locations we can use, we just need someone to organize it. For anyone
interested in organizing or whatever, we have about 50 people in this
group, and about 100 on the meetup.com game dev group. There's some
overlap between the groups, and not everyone actually shows up. The
important part is probably that about 20-30 people are likely to show
up, given past meetups for game dev stuff.

Anyone who wants to organize a meeting, post here, and we can decide
on a time and place.

I will probably be at the flash 'general' meetup tomorrow, if it's as
casual as the last one I'm sure anyone who wants to discuss OGI
related stuff is welcome to find me there.

Todd,

Got Siggraph and personal arrangements in the next few weeks.
If no one organizes a meeting by mid August, I'll see what options
are for a library meet. I've personally had a summer class at the
Columbus Metropolitan Main Library
(http://www.columbuslibrary.org/ebranch/index.cfm?
pageid=30&bldgid=730)
in one of their meeting rooms. Great option and has dry erase boards
(if I remember right) and a projector. Don't know if you can bring
food in though.

We can plan ahead by seeing who would be attending and gain a
list that way. I would for one would be attending.

----

Devin,

Is your meetup group this one? (http://www.meetup.com/clevelandflex/)
If so, I would love to attend one of your meetings if I get a chance
and
can make it up there. Just a long drive for me in Columbus.

Sounds like a good plan, Wes. Ideally, I'd like for us to have a
meetup sometime in August, and then one every month or so after that.
Provided I don't have any conflicts with the date, I'd definitely be
there.

I'm fairly certain Devin is talking about this meetup group (http://
www.meetup.com/flash-143/) here in Columbus. Since I'm currently
working where it's located, I'll be there tonight. It's almost
certainly going to be as casual as the last one. Hopefully, Steve
Castro, who runs the Columbus game dev meetup, will also be there, and
we can bug him to schedule something.

Wes,

When we had PyOhio in the Library, the basement meeting room could
hold as many as 200. And we had massive amounts of pizza and drinks. I
will see if I can get a contact.

Sorry, forgot to hit reply all and this went only to Devin yesterday.

Definitely welcome you all to the Flash Meetup tomorrow. Theres a lot of interest in games within the Flash community and it comes up quite often at the Meetups. In the past we have had companies like Kongregate present on Flash and casual gaming. Tomorrows Meetup will be an informal get together but we may be discussing Adobes monetization platform for Flash games and applications (it comes out of alpha today). We do have some game related presentations that we have been trying to get scheduled so it would be great to talk with some of you about topics and interests or see if there is some opportunity for collaboration there.

I would also be chat about any of the organizational hurdles you guys might be facing. Having started a company (we do a lot of serious game work) and a community group I might have some experience that might be helpful.

If you do make it tomorrow track me down and say Hi. If you know anyone else that might be interested pass the info along. Its always a fun time.

I would love to come! As long as I know far enough in advance as I
will have to drive almost three hours round trip.

I can pretty much guarantee that there will be a general game
development meeting sometime in the middle of August. The only date I
cannot make it is August 19th. Location, date, and time are still
open to debate, but I think the topic will mostly be 'the state of
game development in ohio' or something like that. The goal being to
talk about this group, IDGA stuff, and mention a few of the game
development companies in the area. We'll see what happens.

I would be interested on either date (August 17th or 18th).
I do not know of a regular place to host an event but the
idea of meeting at a library still interest me. I haven't had
the chance to talk to Trane Depriest who helped to host
the previous IGDA meeting. Although, I've heard that you
have already contacted him. Let's keep ideas rolling for
location and time.

I personally like an evening time which could be
something like 7pm but I'm just throwing a number out there.

17th works better for me.

I have learned that Trane Depriest is no longer working at the office
we used for IGDA, so that option is out. I'm going to keep
investigating other options, and I'm sure I'll find something by the
end of the week.

The next gamedev meetup is now scheduled for 6pm, August 17th, at
tracermedia. It will mostly be a social event, with a short
presentation about the game incubator, and the local IGDA chapter.
Details about the event, plus RSVPs are here:
http://www.meetup.com/The-Columbus-Ohio-Game-Development-Meetup-Group/calendar/14262872/

Meetups will be planned for September, October and December of this
year, as well.
