What Ohio Game Incubator Needs

There's a lot of discussions here related to finding game ideas,
getting together resources, getting financing, setting up a permanent/
official website, or facebook group, or whatever. While this type of
thing is useful, it's basically just a bunch of conversation and is
really going nowhere at the moment. What the Ohio Game Incubator
needs, more than anything else, is a location we can use to do
development, or discuss possible ideas, or just meet.

Ideally, this would be somewhere with decent free parking, internet
access, and is possible to use on Saturdays/Sundays. At the very
least, we'd need internet access, and being able to meet on the
weekends would be good for those of us who have full time jobs.
There's been a lot of brainstorming on locations at various times, but
so far nothing has come of it.

Now, I know that Devin has a full time job and Alex is spending his
time setting up a business. So, if anyone has time to find a location
and set up meetings there, please speak up and volunteer.

Without a location where we can meet and do game development, nothing
is really going to happen with the Ohio Game Incubator except for a
slow death as fewer and fewer people pay attention to topics like "We
need ideas"

I don't want to sound like an ass, but something needed to be said,
and I don't want to see the OGI die out without a fight.

Ok, well them let's solve it now so we know where to go. The Easton
mall has free wifi and free parking, and it's open nearly all the
time. The problem with using Easton is it's always full of people.
Many of the libraries, etc. around here have free wifi as well, but
their hours on weekends are a bit slim and they demand quiet, so
that's not a great idea. That leaves us with the various coffee
shops. Caribou and Panera especially seem pretty willing to let
people setup shop and work from there, but there are many other
similar options. If we get booted from one place, there's always
another. If we rotate locations, I seriously doubt any of them will
even notice or care. I vote for the following rotation if we have to
move locations: Mill Run Panera, Polaris Caribou, Grandview Panera,
(Is the worthington caribou still there?), etc.
Thoughts?
Thanks,

Devin

Our for-pay option is renting a cube at the DEC, which would cost us
$125 or so per month. If we were able to take up a collection across
all of our members, this would be about $12 per year. I am pretty
sure we could use their open space once we had a cube rented, so that
would be a really easy way to have a very large meeting area while
being out of pocket as little as possible, since we wouldn't expect
all our members to be there at any given time.

I'd personally be willing to pay for the DEC cube if we get enough
people here saying they would really go to it. I don't want to be
buying space we're not even going to use, that's why i'd prefer up
front to either get everyone to kick in for the DEC space evenly, so
we all have a stake in being there, or to just meet at coffee shops by
default until we have enough regulars to warrant the for-pay meeting
space.

I suggest we stick with the coffee shops until we have enough regulars
to make the DEC a viable option. A note about the DEC option, I think
you're overestimating how many people would donate for a space.
Currently, this group has 55 members, and if everyone chipped in
evenly, it'd be about $28/year per member. But, out of those 55
members, only 18 have made posts or at least are set as having
permissions to post messages. It's safe to say that not everyone who
is a member here is likely willing to donate toward a space. This is
something to keep in mind when figuring costs.

So, stick to coffee shops until we have a regular schedule of meetings
and enough people decide it's worth pursuing a paid space. The next
important thing to do: setting a date, time, and choosing which
location to meet at first. Then developing a regular meeting
schedule.

Ok well if weekends are what works, how about this Saturday at the
Mill Run Panera between 3 and 7? (i.e. not during the football game,
should be less of an issue)

I really like where you guys are going. Recently, I'm only free any
week Thursdays but am really pumped about meeting up to start
projects. I have no problem with any of the cafes mentioned. Most of
them are about 30+ minutes from where I live but I am willing to make
it work if it will help to gather folks into projects. I can provide
art needs. I sadly will not be able to make it this Saturday at 3-7pm
as I work at 4pm to close.

I work all days except Thursdays from 6pm-close (close is 12am or
1am). I am going to ask if I can get Tuesdays off too. Sorry about the
bad schedule but if I can attend a meeting in any way, let me know
how! DEC sounds nice yes but, I would agree with Todd that we may need
more members to pitch in before we head that route. Thanks!

There are tuesdays and thursdays where I can meet after work, but
probably not all of them. It's sounding like we just need to have a
group calendar or an in/out board... I think knowing you'd be able to
meet others there ahead of going would be helpful.

I'll put the one I can make it to so far there, if you have a time
you'd be there, add it to the list or add yourself to the meeting so
we can start to accumulate a few dates/etc. to do this.

I tried this site:
you add your free times here: http://whenisgood.net/4jw4s2

and it collates us all together on times we should meet here:

here you can edit the original:

Devin: I made the Tuesday and Thursday slots available to start work.
However, the other slots are not open for me. I will not be able to
meet this Saturday which I work 4pm-1am. Is there a way to add my
available time slots as well for others to meet or would that be
counter productive against your selected time slots?

I apologize 10 fold Alan, this link was broken for me at first:
www.whenisgood.net and thought it was a phishing scam. After opening
to Devin's sites I found it to be very useful. I am very very sorry.
If you run into any problems, let me know.

I'll try to be there Saturday for at least a few hours.

Wes: the third link Devin posted is where you can edit the original
and add time slots that are good for you. Additionally, google groups
seems to not like links that don't have the http at the front, so it
makes sense that the link wouldn't work.

Ok, I think I'm getting the hang of this. I edited the calendar to
show time slots for Tuesday and Thursday. I would understand if many
would not be able to make these days during the day but will place
them in case some folks on here can make it in the evening. I would be
more than happy to negotiate a meet with anyone interested.

Alternatively, I could meet any week day before 5pm for other people
with grave shift work schedules like mine.

Devin, if you would be willing to meet on some Tuesdays and Thursdays,
would we be meeting at the "mill run panera?"

I say mill run panera is the default -- its more or less in the center
of town, right off of the beltway, so it should be relatively easy to
get to for everyone. If we need to relocate for any reason, let's
agree to give everyone as much advance notice as possible and suggest
a few alternatives. I am fine with anything in town that is off of a
freeway for easy access.

I'll see anyone who is available @ the mill run panera today
(Thursday) at 11AM around lunchtime, it does get a bit busy but the
meeting room is usually not that bad, that's where i'll be. To anyone
who is reading this, if I had a check for 10 grand waiting for you
there, would you go then? Something to think about.

You know what I've been thinking Todd?

Why not post the When is Good OGI meeting calender on the Columbus
Ohio Game Developers Meet Up Group (COGD) site?

Your thoughts?

It's a good idea. I'll post about it probably after we have the
meetup this week. Hopefully we can keep the same schedule for the
next month or so.

there hopefully. We have a lot to discuss :)

Sorry, just now saw your message. I was actually at Panera Saturday
afternoon/night, but like Wes, I'm a good 30 minute drive away, so I
probably won't make it out too often. Saturday or Sunday works for
me, but I'd probably only be able to make it out to one day or the
other. If I know in advance which day you'll be there, I'll try to
make it out then. Sorry about last week, I got caught up doing some
other stuff at home.

anyone?

Honestly, I'm not sure. Both Wes and myself are located in south east
Columbus at the moment (Obetz and Groveport, respectively). The
closest Panera I could find is the one in Bexley. However, I'm open
to suggestions, since there might be other places we can go that fit
our needs.

Hey Todd (and others),

If Panera catches your fancy, I would be up to meet at the one in
Bexley at 2924 East Broad Street Columbus, OH 43209.

Or they have another Panera at 1619 North High Street Columbus, OH
43201 which is pretty close to "tracermedia" where we have our
meetings.

Still have Tuesdays and Thursdays open. I would like to meet to see
how last Wedneday's meeting went and throw some game ideas around.

Hey Wes (and anyone else still reading this list),

If you're able to meet at the Bexley Panera Tuesday (tomorrow), let me
know, and I'll show up. This Thursday is bad for me (rifftrax live),
otherwise, for next week, Tuesday or Thursday both work. Ideally if
you can let me know before tomorrow morning, so I can be sure to pack
up my laptop. Basically any time after 6pm works, I could probably
get there by about 6:30 or so.

Otherwise, I plan on sending out a mass email to the meetup group
covering how the latest meetup went, and giving heads up on the next
few topics.

make because of teaching. Stinks, but hopefully I can come to one in
the near future!

Todd,
Sounds good to me. If you want to meet up at Bexley Panera today
Tuesday 26th at 6:30pm, I'm go. If that does not give you enough time,
let me know and we can push to 7pm or w/e. I'm flexible. I still have
your business card with phone number. You can e-mail me or call. Will
send you a response e-mail this morning.

For others,
The more the merrier! I know it's a bit sudden but would love to see
folks from Southern Columbus and then some. Just a general meet to
discuss game ideas. I would like to to get a ball rolling on working
out some ideas for an hour or so, even if it's just brain storming.

Will keep in touch here.

As part of last nights meeting, I think we're going to start doing
regular meetings Saturday afternoon (starting around 1-2pm to
whenever). As for location, I'm going to suggest the Lennox Barnes
and Noble, or Cup of Joe. I know they both have free wifi, and it's a
fairly central location with lots of free parking.

Devin, let us know if this weekend would be feasible for you, or if
next weekend works better. Either option is ok by me.
