There are a number of gaming contests out around the internet, some
are bogus but some are legit. I am happy to have an Ohio Game
Incubator representation in any of the legit ones, so if you have a
contest in mind that is possibly too big for any one person to win
solo, post it here and we can organize a team of members to compete as
a unit.
Thanks,
Devin

Hey guys,

A friend turned me on to this site: http://www.polycount.com/

They have a great community for gamers and recently had a partnership
with Valve to do a contest for the new up coming Team Fortress 2
Player Packs. Didn't have time to do the contest but would love to
join a team on here if another contest sprouts up.

From that site, here's one that our more artistic members can team up
to win:

http://www.cgsculpt.org/bossbattle.html

Contest runs until September 15th. Official rules from the site:

BOSS BATTLE | Now Live! June 15th to September 15th

Mission

Design and sculpt a formidable adversary so sinister and powerful that
it presents an insurmountable challenge to defeat in battle. You are
encouraged to create a back story and concepts to support your Boss
character.

Process

■Create a thread on CGSculpt.org within the Boss Battle forum to share
your progress from design to final sculpture.
■It is preferred, but not required, that you write a brief back story
(2-10 sentences long) describing the environment in which this Boss
resides and a history of how your character has taken root as the
ultimate antagonist within its world.
■It is preferred, but not required, that you post 2D concepts,
references, or rough quick sculpt concepts of the character design
prior to creating your finished sculpture.
■Share your work in progress as you develop your character. (Artists
who do not share their work in progress and only post on the final
days of the contest will receive score deductions.)
■Create a pedestal for your final character to showcase your work.
■Illuminate your character using any lighting or rendering solution
you choose. HDR and image based lighting are acceptable.
■Render a beauty pass image of your sculpture no larger than 1300x1300
pixels or 400k. This image may contain post effects and editing as
long as you do not alter the shape or detail of the model.
■Render a set of unedited images of your model from the following
views: front, side, three quarters, and back. These should be no more
than 1000x1000 pixels each.

Guidelines and Policies
■The design must be unique and original, created exclusively for this
contest.
■You must create the artwork on your own and are required to design
and sculpt the character without collaboration.
■Your final sculpture and pedestal combined must be under 40 million
polygons.
■You may use any 3D sculpting software.
■The judges' decision is final and by entering you agree not to
contest the outcome.
■You retain all rights to your Boss Battle artwork and by entering
this contest you agree to allow CGSculpt.org to display images of your
Boss Battle artwork for promotional puposes.
■The sponsors are responsible for awarding prizes to the winners. If a
sponsor withdraws from supporting the contest, CGSculpt cannot be held
liable to replace the item.
■By entering Boss Battle you uphold that all of your submitted
artwork, designs, writting, and supporting images are solely your
creation and intellectual property.
■If you win a 3D print your model may require minor modifications to
allow for physical fabrication. To receive the prize of a 3D print
your cooperation is necessary.

Prohibited Subjects and Techniques
■Distasteful use of nudity and other offensive topics - Please use
good judgement.

■2D texture maps applied to your model - The final asset must be an
untextured sculpture.

■Likenesses of famous individuals - You may choose to use a likeness
of someone as a starting point, but you must obtain their consent.

■Architectural backgrounds and environments - Your model should be
free standing on its pedestal. The pedestal may contain minor elements
such as stonework, dirt, or paving.

■Scan data or purchased model components - The entire creation must be
your original artwork.

Hey Devin & Todd,

Keep up the good finds!

I love the BOSS BATTLE challenge. I may try my hand at it but well
see. I need to get more experience at sculpting tools however.
If the story Eric and I are working on "Mars Earth Penal Colony" takes
off, I'd love to see if he'd be interested in plugging this into this
"10 year pageant".

Talked to Gordon Gavin about doing this challenge also which is near
the fall:

http://www.unearthlychallenge.com/2009/en_about.php

A basic CG environment challenge:

Artists may enter alone or with up to 2 other partners
to create an environment that surpasses everyday objects,
scenes and realities. When the event is over, the
challengers who created an environment that captures the
hearts of judges, wins the event! Be it for - awesome cash
prizes, to make some great friends/contacts, inspire others,
show your talents, get a job in the industry, or to have loads
of fun while testing your skills to the max, you only need
bring yourself and your talents to fully appreciate this event.

You guys have been a lot of wonderful help. Thanks!

The 10 year one is brilliant, I'd assume if we don't have one in 10
years, our group is long gone. My first thought is, what would be the
simplest thing we could make that would also look like it took 10
years?

Comedy answer: release a game and call it Duke Nukem Forever
Less comedy answer: make a game that has the styles/graphics/feel of a
game that is 10 years old or so. Tricky to do, because even in 2000
most games were fairly large projects requiring lots of people.
Semi-serious answer: make a game with a ton of procedurally generated
content. If done right, it would look like it took a long time to
make.

I agree with the procedurally generated content. I was thinking if
the gameplay itself could somehow create a data file from which to
generate more gameplay, then it would appear to be infinite and
infinitely complicated, and different for each person each time they
play. So in my example, the procedurally generated content would draw
on the game's log of current actions to generate more content
somehow. Maybe if the player is killing the zombies, but the player
is hit by zombies that jump, then it makes more jumping zombies for
future levels.

I'm now working on a proof of concept game that uses this type of
procedurally generated content. Hopefully it has the effect we'd
want... a compelling gameplay experience adjusted for difficulty based
on how well the player appears to be doing, etc.

http://dto.github.com/notebook/remix-this-game.html

From the site:

REMIX THIS GAME is an experimental game design contest where
participants can re-mix and re-cycle my free-software self-published
PC game, XONG. XONG is available under permissive licenses allowing
remixes and derivative works of the code, graphics, sound effects, and
music—even for commercial use. The source code license is the GNU GPL
Version 3, and the media is covered by the Creative Commons BY-SA
license.

No special software or programming experience are needed—XONG has been
packaged up so that you can just download the game and edit the
graphics/code/music/sounds in place, and re-start the game to see your
changes. Plus, it is available for Windows, Mac OSX, and GNU/Linux, so
you can remix it on whichever OS you use, using whatever programs you
like.

Registration is now open; sign yourself up here. As the author of
XONG, I will choose the winner and three runners up, and do a blog
post about each entry with (if you choose) an interview or other info.
There is no real prize other than participation in something new, and
possible notoriety for doing something interesting.

See "How do I get started?" below for more details on how to remix the
game.

REMIX THIS GAME is part of the 2010 International Lisp Games Expo.

XONG is a free, fast-moving procedurally-generated puzzle combat game
for Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, and GNU/Linux. XONG is for one player
using a keyboard and mouse. See the XONG page for information,
downloads, and links to what people are saying about XONG.

Here's another contest that Gordon Gavin mentioned to me. Rules are

I did the http:/www.ludumdare.com contest, it was really fun, I highly
recommend the future contests to anyone interested in game design or
development.

Another opportunity. This one is here in Columbus, OH for
screenwriting. The real art of planning storytelling. Neat little
workshop on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 6:00pm. Cost is $25. May be
interesting to check out.

I highly recommend the jelly @ dec event for if anyone needs a quiet
place to discuss/design/build games. I went once to check it out and
I was impressed with the large amount of space and small amount of
attendees. I left before lunch, so I'd guess it picks way up when the
(free) lunch arrives.

Hey Devin,
I found info on this last year at:
http://www.techcolumbus.org/dec-presents-jelly-dec-1

Do you happen to know when it'll take place again or how often? Great
idea BTW. Maybe we could brainstorm at Jelly a specific group game
project.

It's actually something that happens every 2nd Thursday of the month.
October's event details: http://www.meetup.com/techlifecolumbus/calendar/14634454/
The only problem is that this happens on Thursdays, and it'd be hard
for some people to make it out then.
