Allafternoon my stand was "offline" as I was getting a "no internet connection" on the app, even thought Safari and everything else worked fine on my ipad with my WIFI clearly on. Ended up processing payments offline... but don't understand why there was no connection....?
I am having the same problem on my samsung tablet. No stand, operating system android 7.0. Restarting helps sometimes and sometimes not. Tablet has no problems with any other app that uses wifi. Once the card reader works it only last for a short time period before the wifi error is back.
Hi, ran through @helens list, I don't think its the internet, both phones OS and app are up to date, other apps on the phones ((banking, browser, chat, slack, mail, games, spotify etc)) can all communicate just fine to the internet, and being phones if the wifi was broken they revert to cell data. The problem only seems to effect the square app, unable to recover a connection.
I've been having the same issue 1-3x/day every other day or so for a few weeks. My app is on an ipad w/out cell data and we use a jetpack for the wifi. The wifi shows connected, all bars and is working fine- but the app won't connect. I've tried all the tips listed above- unfortunately today, I had to run numerous transactions offline. I will try to connect to another wifi and hope that it will somehow connect. Very frustrating in a busy coffee stand! Any other ideas?
I have been getting the same annoying problem for the last two weeks. This never happened before (I used square for 2 years). The problem will temporarily fix for a payment or two, only after force quitting the app and restarting. Then after a couple payments it has the internet connection issue again. My phone is running on 4g and internet is working perfectly fine. Definitely not my phones internet issue.
So far I had to have customers payments failing (due to internet issues) and them checking their bank app to make sure the payment didnt go through for them THEN I had to restart the app to get the payment through.
Hey @bentwonk - Really sorry you're dealing with this. It's a bit odd that several of your POS devices are having trouble connecting to the internet. We haven't heard recent reports of the POS app having connectivity issues but that doesn't mean we cannot take a deeper look into things.
Hi, I'm very interested in any updates to this thread, because I have been having the same problem. As I put a transaction through, it claims it has no internet connection, but as soon as I click "try again" it goes through. It happens about half the time.
My office roommate has been having a different problem of her "device can't connect" (the reader). We both began having problems in November and despite numerous troubleshooting attempts have been unable to resolve. She even bought a new reader and that doesn't work.
Given how unreliable the software is it would be great to have a seperate reset button and connect buttons on the reader, instead of having to press and wait in front of the customer for the reader to take its sweet time to flash orange or red.
Most supported applications, such as Lightspeed, Shopify, Square, etc., require our scanners to connect to tablets in Application Mode. However, in many instances, corresponding web-based inventory software require scanners to connect in Basic Keyboard Mode. Previously, the workaround required resetting the scanner each time you needed to change applications and pair it in the required mode.
A Pairing Reset removes the existing pairing from the memory of the barcode reader, making it discoverable to other host devices, but leaves any other configuration settings in place.
A Factory Reset puts the barcode reader back to its original factory default settings, making it discoverable to other host devices, but also removes any and all configuration settings that may have been applied.
If you have paired a Socket Mobile barcode reader to an Apple device in Basic Keyboard Mode and the iOS keyboard is missing, simply double-tap the power button to toggle the iOS keyboard up/down as required.
To pair in the default reader mode, the S370 requires an application that contains the Socket Mobile CaptureSDK. Launch your supported application, and the S370 will connect automatically. If you are unsure if your application is supported, please contact your application provider.
Application Mode Set-Up Instructions - If you are using one of the apps listed above, or one that is found on our Business Apps page, you can set up your barcode reader after downloading the Companion application:
Important - If connecting to an Apple device in Basic Keyboard Mode, the Apple on-screen keyboard will be disabled. Simply double-tapping the power button will toggle the keyboard up / down. See this video for details .
On Apple iOS devices it's possible to use a Socket Mobile reader in Application Mode and read data into applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, Notes, or when scanning into a web-based text field. Please follow the instructions below:
Your Socket Mobile reader can be configured to any of the languages listed below (languages not listed are currently not supported.) These languages are only applicable when using your reader in Basic Keyboard Mode with apps such as Safari, MS Word, or Excel, or a text entry field in a web-based application.
The Shopify Tap & Chip Reader is an EMV-compliant card reader that connects wirelessly to your iPad, iPhone, or Android device in the United States. You can use Shopify's Tap & Chip Reader to accept contactless and chip card payments with the Shopify POS app.
To process a POS transaction in person using Shopify Payments and a Shopify card reader, the country and currency information must match that of your physical store's location. Refer to Country and currency compliance for selling in person.
Some Shopify POS features, such as Tap to Pay, may require newer devices or newer operating system versions. Keeping all operating systems up-to-date is strongly encouraged to ensure the best security for your data.
The Shopify POS app doesn't support beta operating systems. For security, Shopify POS isn't supported on operating systems modified through "jailbreaking", "rooting", or other similar techniques, and requires a locked and unchanged bootloader.
If you update your device to iOS 14 or higher and use third-party Shopify apps, then you might need to activate Cross-Website tracking in your iOS settings. Cross-Website tracking lets third-party Shopify apps that you install in your Shopify admin stay connected in Shopify Inbox, Shopify Point of Sale, and the Shopify app.
If the reader is tampered with, dropped with a severe impact, or connected to an unstable power source, then the reader enters a tampered state. Tampered state is indicated by red LEDs illuminated on both the left and right of the reader.
To turn on the Tap & Chip Reader, press and release its power button. The status lights should turn on and display the battery level. If you've already paired and connected the reader with your POS device, then the reader automatically reconnects to the device.
After 8 hours of inactivity, the Tap & Chip Reader goes to sleep. You need to press and release the power button to wake the card reader again. If you press and hold the power button for 4 seconds or more, then the reader resets any Bluetooth pairing it had, and needs to be paired again.
You can charge the Tap & Chip Reader by using the USB cable that's supplied with it. To charge the reader, plug the small end of the USB connector into the card reader, and then plug the large end into a phone charger or computer.
To use the card reader with Shopify POS, you need to pair the reader with your device through Shopify POS. After the reader and device are paired, the reader automatically connects to the device whenever both are turned on and in range.
Customers enter their PIN directly on an iPad or iPhone device in Canada. To avoid unwanted contact with the screen, consider providing a Stylus pen for your customers to use when interacting with your POS device.
Refunds are available for Interac debit. To prevent fraud, the refund must be made in person with the debit card present. If the customer used an Interac card attached to a digital wallet, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, then the original device used must be present. You can't refund a purchase to a different payment than what was originally used, nor can you refund the purchase in cash. Refunds can't be completed through the Shopify admin.
For further security, Interac cards also have a cumulative Interac tap spend limit. This limit applies to the sum of all Interac contactless transactions made with the card from the last time the customer entered their PIN. When this limit is reached, the customer needs to insert the card and enter their PIN, which authorizes the purchase and resets the Interac tap spend limit.
Using the Shopify Dock for the Tap & Chip Reader with the incorrect adapter can cause the dock to overheat. To avoid overheating, use the Shopify Retail Stand or USB chargers supplying 6 Watts (5 V, 1.2 A) only.
The case is designed to attach the Shopify Tap & Chip reader to the back of your iPhone. This gives you the mobility and ease to take payments without being restricted to a countertop checkout. It also offers protection for your iPhone and card reader.
