Sometimesyou need to make a change to your email account settings. If you have a new password, if your email provider has asked you to change settings, or if you're having problems with sending and receiving email, you can change your email account settings through Mail in the Windows Control Panel, or from Outlook.

You'll need to know your account type, the incoming and outgoing server names, and the SSL and port settings for your email account. You can either contact your email provider or, if you're using a popular email service, you can find these settings in the POP and IMAP email settings for Outlook topic.

On the Change Account window, check the Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server settings against those from your email provider or the reference article. If it's different, update the settings.

Select either Incoming mail or Outgoing mail to change a variety of server settings. This is also where you can update your email password (after you've changed the password with your email provider).

If you're trying to add your Outlook.com account to Outlook or another mail app, you might need the POP, IMAP, or SMTP settings. You can find them below or by viewing them in your Outlook.com settings.

Your Microsoft account password.

If your password is not being recognized, or if you want to add your Outlook.com account to a smart device like a home security camera, you may need an app password. Learn how to add your Outlook.com account to another mail app or smart device.

If you use Outlook.com to access an account that uses a domain other than @live.com, @hotmail.com, or @outlook.com, you might not be able to sync your accounts using IMAP. To resolve this, remove the connected IMAP account in Outlook.com and reconfigure it as a POP connection. For instructions about how to reconfigure your account to use POP, contact your email account provider.

If you're using a GoDaddy account, follow these instructions to reconfigure your GoDaddy account to use POP. If using POP doesn't resolve your issue, or you need to have IMAP enabled (it's disabled by default), contact GoDaddy support.

I changed my Comcast password on Dec 19th because of the Xfinity breach. My outlook.live mail has not synced since. I chose mail settings and sync email to get to the account to change the password but all that i got was a page that said unable to load these settings. Please try again later. I also started an export as I have important information that I need. The export has been running for 10 days. The two are probably related.

2. Email Export Issue: Export processes can take up to 4 days, particularly for larger mailboxes. However, if your export has been running for 10 days, there might be an issue. Here are some steps to try:

Ah, so I did that and this is what Microsoft Level 1 Support told me this afternoon after they were in communication with Level 2 Support: "...the page load error is a world wide issue and we are working on this issue to fix this issue." They also said: "Microsoft removed the ability to connect any other accounts to Outlook.com on May 10, 2021, but accounts connected before May 10, 2021, will continue to sync." Will wait and see if it starts working again. My guess is that eventually sync email is going to be completely removed from Outlook.com, that one will have to use the desktop app if one wants that function, though that seems counter-intuitive to the cloud movement.

@Jeffc19 I have had exactly the same issue due to the need to change the password on a legacy Comcast/Xfinity synced account precipitated by a data breach at that origin. Now I cannot sync or coordinate with my outlook/hotmail account. In reading further, it appears to be a Microsoft worldwide issue, so for now we wait for the bug fix.

I sign into my account where all my other accounts are synced, and I go to the tool bar, in the above right hand corner is the gear icon, a drop down menu will open and I select Sync email, when that window opens it tells me "Unable to lead these settings. Please try again later." Yet I was able to sync a new outlook.com account that I created in December 2023 in this manner, why is it no longer available. I have 8 separate email addresses synced to my main account, this is how I am able to read all of my messages online.

This option isn't compatible with Security defaults in Microsoft Entra ID. We recommend using Modern Authentication when connecting with our service. For more information about OAuth, see Authenticate an IMAP, POP or SMTP connection using OAuth.

You must also verify that SMTP AUTH is enabled for the mailbox being used. SMTP AUTH is disabled for organizations created after January 2020 but can be enabled per-mailbox. For more information, see Enable or disable authenticated client SMTP submission (SMTP AUTH) in Exchange Online.

Although SMTP AUTH is available now, we announced Exchange Online will permanently remove support for Basic authentication with Client Submission (SMTP AUTH) in September 2025. We strongly encourage customers to move away from using Basic authentication with SMTP AUTH as soon as possible. For more Information about alternative options, please see our announcement here- -team-blog/exchange-online-to-retire-basic-auth-for-client-submission-smtp/ba-p/4114750

Each device or application must be able to authenticate with Microsoft 365 or Office 365. The email address of the account that's used to authenticate with Microsoft 365 or Office 365 will appear as the sender of messages from the device or application.

Enter the following settings directly on your device or in the application as their guide instructs (it might use different terminology than this article). As long as your scenario meets the requirements for SMTP AUTH client submission, the following settings will enable you to send emails from your device or application:

Determine what version of Transport Layer Security (TLS) your device supports by checking the device guide or with the vendor. If your device or application doesn't support TLS 1.2 or above, you have the following alternatives:

For more information about configuring your own email server to send mail to Microsoft 365 or Office 365, see Set up connectors to route mail between Microsoft 365 or Office 365 and your own email servers.

For information about TLS, see How Exchange Online uses TLS to secure email connections and for detailed technical information about how Exchange Online uses TLS with cipher suite ordering, see TLS cipher suites supported by Office 365.

If the printer or application wants to send emails from a different account, the sign-in account should have Send As permission over that account. Otherwise, the result is an error similar to:

You want your device or application to send from each user's email address and don't want each user's mailbox credentials configured to use SMTP client submission. Direct send allows each user in your organization to send emails using their own address.

You want to send bulk emails or newsletters. Microsoft 365 or Office 365 doesn't allow you to send bulk messages via SMTP AUTH client submission. Direct send allows you to send a higher volume of messages.

There is a risk of your email being marked as spam by Microsoft 365 or Office 365. You might want to enlist the help of a bulk email provider to assist you. For example, they'll help you adhere to best practices, and can help ensure that your domains and IP addresses aren't blocked by others on the internet.

We recommend adding a Sender Policy Framework (SPF) record to avoid having messages flagged as spam. If you're sending from a static IP address, add it to your SPF record in your domain registrar's DNS settings as follows:

If your device or application can send from a static public IP address, obtain this IP address and make a note of it. You can share your static IP address with other devices and users, but don't share the IP address with anyone outside of your company. Your device or application can send from a dynamic or shared IP address but messages are more prone to antispam filtering.

Now that you are done configuring your device settings, go to your domain registrar's website to update your DNS records. Edit your SPF record. In the entry, include the IP address that you noted in step 1. The finished string looks similar to the following example:

This IP address will be authorized to send on your domain's behalf. Anyone with access to it could send emails to any external recipient and it would pass SPF checking. You should consider carefully who has access to use this IP address.

The application or device in your organization's network uses direct send and your Microsoft 365 or Office 365 mail exchange (MX) endpoint to send emails to recipients in your organization. It's easy to find your MX endpoint in Microsoft 365 or Office 365 if you need to look it up.

You can configure your device to send emails directly to Microsoft 365 or Office 365. Use direct send method to send email to recipients with Microsoft 365 or Office 365 mailboxes in your organization. If your device uses direct send to try to relay an email for a recipient who doesn't have a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 mailbox, the email will be rejected.

If your device or application has the ability to act as an email server to deliver messages to Microsoft 365 or Office 365 and to other email providers, there are no Microsoft 365 or Office 365 settings needed for this scenario. For more information, see your device or application instructions.

SMTP relay lets Microsoft 365 or Office 365 relay emails on your behalf by using a connector that's configured with a TLS certificate (recommended) or your public IP address. Setting up a connector makes this option more complicated.

If neither of the above conditions have been fulfilled, Microsoft 365 can't determine whether the message that was sent from the device or application belongs to your organization. Therefore, you should ensure that you meet either of the above conditions.
