All the videos start playing, and play for usually a minute or more but then stop and that message appears. I can get back to the previous screen and hit play again and it plays the content, again for just a minute or so.
If you hold down the Menu button and the down arrow on the remote for 10 sec until the LED on the front of the Apple TV begins to flash. Let go of the buttons and the Apple TV will do a soft reboot.
This has been happening to me several times a week and doing this seems to fix the issue.
For my Apple TV 4K, Buddy's answer worked as well, but my remote has no down arrow. I had to reboot the Apple TV by pressing the MENU button and the TV button together for a couple seconds until the LED flashes and TV went dark.
Another odd thing though was that I had to "reboot" a couple of times as it failed to fully load the menus the first two times and the remote was completely unresponsive... It starting to sound like I may have a faulty unit...
like all ive seen this error also.the source can be anything from the apple tv not being able to contact the server where the content is located, so anything on your local network preventing access like your router. Or if you switch tv inputs while a video is loaded and paused, when you come back you may see this error and its due to HDMI content protection DRM crap.
currently i only see this error when trying to send a video via airplay from my iphone when the video is in a format that the apple tv cant understand, usually from an app using the webview and the video is loaded from there instead of safari.
Thanks Bagster! Your solution worked for me. Nothing physical had changed with my setup. Nothing changed with my network/firewall. I got home from work tonight and turned on my ATV. I was prompted to update my ATV software, but declined at first. Then I tried to watch a movie on Netflix and kept receiving this error. I reset the ATV unit and tried again - nothing. So I decided to update the software thinking that might fix it. Update completed, but still unable to stream. I could make it to selecting the video with no problem, and I tried several different ones, but none of them would play. I reseated all my cables, tried another HDMI cable and still no luck. I decided to search online (What did we do before Google?) and found this thread - I changed my HDMI output in Audio/Video settings from Auto to YCbCr and it started working.
It might be your internet connection. i had the same problem My wifi in my house is fine but needs this sort of internet login which you get on phones and laptop but since it cannot be used on the apple TV is just says connected and may connect with a good signal but it may not play any video at all. i tried connecting it to my iphone 4s' internet connection through hotspot it worked perfectly, so i just blamed it on the internet connection.
I recently bought an Apple TV3 (30-01-2014) and rented a movie through itunes to test the Apple TV3. I too received the error experienced by everyone... I did a lot of reading on the issue and tried everything people suggested but still nothing work.
The only solution I haven't tried is the DNS "fix". Setting it to the google DNS or as suggested by FingerCuffs to my router's IP. Hopefully this will work.....I will provided an update as soon as I've attempted it. However I need some guidance in finding out what my router's IP is. I have a the new AirPort express. Any suggestion of what it will be or where I can find it?
Just an update on my post above. I tried the DNS fix proposed by FingerCuffs. I change the DNS on the Apple TV 3 to the IP of my AirPort Express. And the work!!!!! The error is gone and I could view the movie! Didn't try setting the DNS to the Google IP 008.008.008.008 so not so if it will work.
I have 2 Apple TVs. One is a jailbroken ATV2 and one is an ATV3. I am not receiving this error on my JB ATV2 on netflix, hulu or youtube content at all. I am receiving the error when trying to use airplay and send content from a website www.tvgrapevine.com which has mp4 clips that I am trying to stream using airplay. But what is weird is that when I use my ATV3 I can stream those clips from that site with no problems. I only get the error when trying to use my JB ATV2. It is very frustrating. I have tried chaning the DNS code to the .008 and going manual instead of automatic but that did not work. And as I said, everything else is playing fine except clips from this website. I also am able to stream from iTunes from my iPhone to the JB ATV2 with no problems as well.
I have been getting this error message for the past few days now. I have mostly been watching Netflix on my AppleTV, so it's only happened while watching shows on Netflix. Tonight was the worst, as it happened 5 or 6 times. I have had my AppleTV for less than three weeks, so I hope it is not a problem with the device itself. I unhooked and then reconnected the device and also moved it to a new location. I also went to Settings > General > Restart and Settings > General > Software Update, but none of these things has stopped the problem. So if I change the DNS setting from automatic to manual, then enter my IP address, the problem should go away? If not, I guess my only other options would be to run an ethernet cable through the house, which I don't really want to do, or take it back to the store and exchange it. Thanks.
I followed FingerCuff's instructions and everything was fine for a couple of nights, but I have started getting the error message again. Not sure what else to do but exchange the device for another one. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I tried resetting when I first started having this problem a couple of weeks ago, and it hasn't prevented the problem from reoccuring. When the error occurs, I can easily get back to my program and resume watching it, but that's not the issue. I shouldn't be randomly disconnected right in the middle of a show or movie. It's annoying and pulls me out of the experience. If the Apple TV is not going to work properly, it's not worth having.
I am getting the message AN ERROR OCCURRED LOADING THIS CONTENT in my Apple TV. I have no troble loading and playing content in my iphone with TV app. I also get the same error when i try to stream this movie from the iphone to Apple TV using mirror. My internet speed is fine and the network test result OK Already tried: - Restat Apple TV - Reset Apple TV - switch Apple TV from Ethernet to WiFi and back from WiFi to Ethernet - change settings : TV resolution and subtitle Any ideas?
I'm having a similar issue. I can even play older movies that I have purchased; but, not the latest Underworld that I just bought. I also have a season pass to two TV shows. I can stream older episodes, but not the latest episodes of either TV saow. I can play all of this content on myawife's iPhone, and iPad - but not my 2nd Gen Apple TV. I can't stream it from the Internet, and I cannot use airplay from any of the devices noted above. I suspect something has changed regarding digital rights management. When I stream "older" (by only a week or so older) content, I see the "Authorizing" message on the screen right before it starts to play - but that Authorizing message is never seen when trying to play this new content. While I am confident my Internet speeds are not the culprit, I did switch from Wifi to Ethernet, to rule out the case of wireless issues within the Apple TV (the rest of my devices use the wireless without an issue).
The movie seemed to be playing on my Mac at one point, but when I attempted to restart it from the beginning, I received the following error notification: "The selected movie won't play on your display. This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).
You described this issue perfectly. I've been experiencing this too, as have others (see TV shows not loading and tv shows work on computer but not apple tv for some recent threads), though shows from this past week seem to be on track again, but everything from April 2nd to this past Sunday April 16th are not.
The network test on the device doesn't account for issues, you need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. This will give accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks.
I am having the exact same issues you describe, further the issues only started when we purchased Underworld Blood Wars 2 nights ago. I'll be interested to get to the bottom of this it's very annoying!
There is no resolution to this issue at this time, but I have contacted and spoke with senior advisor and was informed that apple is aware of the issue and has been able to recreate problem, was told issue will need to be fixed by Apple releasing an update, but they weren't sure if it would be an update for devices or update on the iTunes server
