2nd type BC for mass transport

Dear all,

is it possible to define Neumann boundary condition for flow and mass transport on a same boundary in OGS?

In Feflow one can use divergence form of mass transport equation to solve such kind of problem (white papers, volume I, page 121).

Which form(s) (convective or divergence) of transport equation is (are) solved in OGS?

Hi Wenkui,

In OGS we can we set non-advective flux as a Neumann boundary condition for mass transport. Advective mass flux can be modeled by prescribing inflow concentrations as Dirichlet and a flow rate as Neumann at inlet.

Why do you need Neumann bcs for both flow and mass transport at the same place?

thanks a lot for your quick reply.

I think the two approaches mentioned by you should be sufficient for most practical modeling works.

Nevertheless, I think it would be more intuitive if we can define the mass flux directly as Neumann BC, if we know the rate of a substance entering the domain. 

What happens if the mass flux is controlled by advection and dispersion simultaneously?

In this case, the concentration on the BC may not be constant even though the rate for mass and fluid entering the domain remains same all the time.
