Pretty clear preference to "ottawaruby.ca"

John T. had another good suggestion of

Personally I'm supportive of registering this name, however there's always a risk of having the domain owner disappear/get busy/etc. As such I do favour registering our own domain.

Barring any major opposition I'd like to go ahead and register 'ottawaruby.ca' - can someone let me know a good .ca registrar?

for what it's worth, all our Shopify related domains are registered with www.domainsatcost.ca . Their service is somewhat poor and their infrastructure is pretty bad so that you need to use a third party name server to actually manage your DNS but the price is right.

Huh? www.domainsatcost.ca states the price is $12.95 for *.ca and
$14.95 for the rest. www.netfirms.ca states their price at $9.95 (for
*.ca).

Given you review, why would anyone look at www.domainsatcost.ca?

Excellent question. 

Probably because they hit the $12.95 about 4 years ago when we were picking up domains for our business :-)

netfirms.ca looks great.

Oh and i like ottawaruby.ca

Chances are that someone looking for a ruby group in ottawa would google for ottawa+ruby and this would likely be the link to click.

I can't say I vouch for them; I was just looking over their web site.

Also, www.domainsatcost.ca does not clearly state that $12.95 is the
price per year. How long does a domain name remain registered these
days? If it's more than one year, then it's cheaper.

Yes, we've got a Linux VM set up. Ryan offered to get the ball rolling
but the hope is this is a group project.

I'm going to register via netfirms.ca as it seems to be a popular
choice. I'll make sure that a few people have the registrar info in
case I get hit by a truck or other ... ;-)
