I have a Microsoft XBOX 360 gamepad with the wireless adapter and I was wondering what I would have to install to use them with Ubuntu I do know that when using this on Windows I have to manually install the drivers for the wireless receiver (if that is relevant.)

If you find difficulties running your XBOX 360 controller, then this will help you install it on a computer running Ubuntu, and also show you how to configure it. These instructions are workable for both wired or wireless X-Box 360 controllers.

and done you just installed Xbox driver and you're all ready to use your Xbox 360 controller :D. I guess when everyone says the controller is a Plug&Play and it does not then you have to install the necessary drivers to use it.

This is an update to existing answers for a way to get an XBox360 controller working in Wine >= 1.7, including Steam games in Wine on Ubuntu >= 13.10. No root permissions needed for installation and operation.

Note that unfortunately, there isn't a 12.04 package for xboxdrv-stable. You may consider contacting contacting the package maintainer, assuming you have a Launchpad.net account. Still, try using the software that needs the driver.

Just as an unrelated side note, the error you were seeing with your makefile was due to the fact that makefiles use tabs for indentation and likely when the file was copied those tabs were changed to spaces.

You don't need to install anything, the kernel has a build in driver. Just plug the wireless adapter into USB and sync the controller. xboxdrv is only needed if you want additional configuration options, button remapping, mouse emulation, etc.

That's old stuff. It should work as soon as you plug it in, if the game is compatible. I think if the game expects an xbox controller (i.e not a generic one) in Wine then it's not likely to work. Native games should work. It's listed as a project for Google Summer of Code so it's on the agenda.

I'm running Linux kernel version 4.0.0 and needed to install nothing and configure absolutely nothing to play games with my XBOX 360 controllers. Even linux-native couch co-op games that require more than one controller like "lovers in a dangerous spacetime" or "trine" worked out of the box. Just plugging in the two controllers and done.

IMPORTANT: Please download and run digitally signed files only! If someone asks to disable antivirus or exclude X360CE app from anti-virus - DON'T! Report any suspicion in Issues and we will try to resolve any false positive with anti-virus developers.

Purpose of HIDGuardian is to hide original controllers from games, so that only virtual controllers are visible. Install HIDGuardian only if original controller prevents virtual controller functioning properly in the game.

DO NOT attempt to remove HIDGuardian by simply deleting it from Windows OS Device Manager. This can result in loosing access to your Mouse and Keyboard and you will be forced to follow Manual Uninstall Instructions below.

The x360ce.exe application version 3.x is just a GUI for editing x360ce.ini and testing your controller. The x360ce.exe (3.x) application can be closed before launching the game. The game doesn't need it and it uses your computer's resources.

Hey everyone. I'm having a terrible time trying to get my new controller to work on Steam games. I have Windows 7. I bought the cheaper Gamestop brand xbox 360 controller today, and I downloaded the driver from Microsoft.com. When I plug the controller in, the green ring around the xbox symbol turns on for a second or two, then nothing. I went to the device manager and it shows "gamepad for xbox 360" in the unknown devices section. Nothing I press on the controller does anything. I don't know what else to try. Can anyone here help me?

You can manually install the microsoft driver. I can't remember the exact steps off the top of my head, but if you right click on it in device manager and choose update driver, then choose the manual option and somewhere it should have choose a driver from a list, go in there and there should be another option that will show all the drivers installed on the system, in the left box go to microsoft and in the right box find the xbox 360 controller, then install it and it should work.

I'm kicking myself in the ass as hard as i possibly can right now. I forgot that I posted this question here a month ago and never checked for a reply. I've been using XBCD in conjunction with XPadder and it was a hot mess just to get any game to work with it. Thank you so much! it works perfectly now!

After a bit of research and questioning, i've been told that the Xbox 360 controller was best suited for playing games on my Mac. After going through some hassle of trying to connect a PS3 controller, who never wanted to show up in my Bluetooth Settings, i resigned a bought new wired controller. After new original Xbox 360 controller arrived, the problems began... again.

So for now i can say: it is not compatible with OS X El Capitan... at all! First i did was to simply connect it. It blinked shortly and went off to never light up again. I thought, this could be an expected behavior and launched Steam so test it anyway. Nothing happened, the controller remained unusable.

Next step: i found a new driver on Github. I downloaded the latest beta (because it mentioned better compatibility with OS X Yosemite), installed it and had to reboot only to see the controller stay unusable. Fired up Steam again, tried some games... no luck.

Going further: I googled many pages and did some fiddlings. Up until now downloaded all versions of the Github drivers, all of the tattiebogle drivers, uninstalled them, installed them, removed them again, installed them over another,... I also tried with kext-dev-mode on, authorized not properly signed kext, ... nothing happened: the controller remains unusable.

I can see the controller in my system summary, no matter what port it's connected to and it even seems to be recognized correctly, as e.g. the vendorID is mentioning Microsoft. But no matter what i am doing or trying, the controller remains *dead*.

Just for testing purposes i did connect it to my Xbox360 and to another Windows PC, just to sadly confirm: this controller is not compatible with OS X El Capitan but runs just fine on Windows or on the Xbox itself.

So now: is there still something i can do or can i call it a day and proclaim: don't buy the Xbox 360 wired controller for your Mac! The drivers are a waste of time and the controller is the worst choice for playing games on a Mac?

Keep in mind that i bought a "wired" controller, not the wireless one, just because of that. Or do you tell me to buy the wireless adapter to be able to connect the wired controller? That would be absurd, no?

This means i did spend 30 bucks for a piece of junk (but i can still use on my 360) and that the the drivers are worthless. I should now spend 60 bucks on a controller i don't even own the console and if that goes wrong i literally send 90 bucks on plastic that does not fulfill it's intended goal. Great!

But thank you for for the advice anyway. I will keep this in mind, and if all goes down i will follow this path... Some guys already mentioned that trying to play on a mac is kind of heretic and if i do try i am literally doomed. I start to believe them, if i can't even get a controller running properly...

I did, until now not solve the problem. I am really considering the PS4 controller solution. The Beta3 driver from Github as mentioned by swebmx does definitively NOT work on my machine, as already mentioned before.

But i came to another fact. I recently got a new Mac: iMac 27" Retina 5K, i7 and 32GB of memory. The first thing i did with this new machine was to install the Beta3 driver from Github and it worked, flawless without any glitches (besides the known ones...) ! I installed Steam and some of the games, tested and approved the install. Conclusion: on a new machine it works!

So I had the same problem (worked and after El Capitan, not at all), and I think I found the answer: The driver is not COMPLETELY unistalled, and previous versions (from Yosemite or whatever) do not work. This is how I got it working:
