Since May 19, 2017, my audio has not worked. Every time I try to reinstall the driver, it fails. Error message is "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. Reinstall drivers for this device (Code 18).

Hold down the Windows key and press R. Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and tap enter.

In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the Conexant device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall and restart.

Also, the HP Support page for my Spectre lists three audio drivers. Two for Conexant ISST Audio, and one for Realtek. I've been selecting the one with the version number that seems to be in sequence with what I've been using.

Could you post full model of your X360. Perhaps I can find specs that define exactly which driver you need. I suspect the older driver will not install because of the security issue addressed with new driver.

In Device Manager, right click and choose Uninstall. You should also have a box to check to remove the driver also. Afterwards, restart and let Windows fully load. Try to install the downloaded driver again. Right click, run as administrator.

Installing updates in Windows 10 can be something of a gamble -- will the latest patches make things better or worse? For people with Conexant ISST audio drivers, there have been numerous issues in Windows 10 May 2020 Update (or Windows 10 version 2004).

Users trying to update these drivers found that the update process would fail or produce errors during or after setup. Having worked with Synaptics, Microsoft has identified a compatibility issue and also provided details of a workaround.

The workaround comes some eight months after the problems were first discovered. But while Microsoft has offered up something of a solution, it is not something that is going to work for everyone, and a proper fix is still to be released in a future update.

Synaptics and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues with certain versions of drivers for Conexant ISST audio driver and Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). Windows 10 devices with affected Conexant ISST audio driver might receive an error or experience issues while installing the update or after the device has updated. The affected driver will be named Conexant ISST Audio or Conexant HDAudio Driver under Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager and have file name uci64a96.dll through uci64a231.dll and a file version of 7.231.3.0 or lower.

To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on Windows 10 devices with affected Conexant or Synaptics audio drivers installed from being offered Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows Server, version 2004 until the driver has been updated. If your organization is using Update Compliance, the safeguard ID is 25178825.

To mitigate the safeguard, you might need to check with your device manufacturer (OEM) to see if an updated driver is available and install it. If updated drivers are not available for your device and you are offered Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2, a small number of devices might roll back to the previous version of Windows 10 when attempting to update. If this occurs, you should attempt to update to Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2 again.

Microsoft says that it is continuing to work with Synaptics to come up with a resolution which will follow in due course. The company also says: "As of January 14, 2021, we are adjusting this safeguard to allow certain devices with the affected driver to update to Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2".

I continue to have trouble with a "pop" sound every time I start playing a video (youtube, etc.), anytime that I change the volume, and also during most Windows alerts. It's driving me up a wall. It also happens any time that I skip to a different point in a video (youtube, etc.).

I RIGHT click on it and choose "Disable Device". As soon as I do that, NO MORE POPPING SOUNDS. However, the audio is not quite as rich (it's good sound, but not as good as when it is enabled--but the popping sound just drives me nuts).

Thanks Xavier! Tell your boss to give you a raise. Your solution worked great. In the past I have always used the generic drivers from Intel (since they are updated much more frequently than the HP drivers)---turn out that's not a good idea with this computer.

2. Go the Device Manger, RIGHT click on HD 620 under display drivers and choose "uninstall", then in the box that pops up put a check in the box for "delete all drivers for this device". If you get a message that you're about to install drivers older than the current drivers, choose YES/install/OK. Whenit's finished and it asks to reboot, choose LATER.

3. Still in Device Manager, under System Devices, RIGHT click on Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R( SST) Audio Controller and choose "uninstall", then in the box that pops up put a check in the box for "delete all drivers for this device".

I am having problems with my HP Elitebook audio for quite sometime now. Every now and then (more often these days), I stop getting audio from my laptop speaker. When I troubleshoot, it reinstalls the drivers (Conexant ISST Audio) and on restarting the machine the speaker works fine. However within some time (sometimes the same day) I again lose audio and I have to follow the same process again. At times I get audio rendering error in youtube and the same process needs to be followed.

From he log it only shows processing ISST Audio and there is no error.
Where do you see the error message?
Is there any error code?

Hi, anonymous user
Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.
Yes, it's the known issue of windows 10 version 2004 and 20H2: Errors or issues during or after updating devices with Conexant ISST audio drivers.
Microsoft and Synaptics are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. And it's recommended not to attempt to manually update using the Update now button or the Media Creation Tool until this issue has been resolved.

IME, if you remove the drivers (and their files) before the upgrade, the compatibility check is skipped and thus the update succeeds and then you can add back the latest drivers after the upgrade as the issue isn't with the drivers themselves to my knowledge, it's with how the drivers are installed and get upgraded.

I have an other question please : in the Microsoft document which explains this Issue (link below) they mentioned that it concerns version 7.231.3.0 or lower which is not the case for my devices (version Uper to 9.0.136.1) can we say that it is the same problem?

HP support has been entirely unhelpful as with the original ticket they closed it before ever contacting me with the driver fix, and then 4 months later sent me a box to send it in for some reason.I told them that would be unnecessary as the audio was working at that point.

Side note: I had 2 of these laptops at first that both had the same issue when they came in new. The audio stopped working after 2 days (I assume when Windows updated). The other laptop updated the audio driver eventually and has stayed fixed. This one seems to not.

To prove or disprove your idea about Windows thinking that the driver is malware, why not uninstall your anti virus and switch to Windows Essentials for a test? If you still get issues and the laptops are in warranty reject them back to HP. The HP rep is helpful and may be able to help. I will tag her.

Hello mclaughlink, thank you for bringing your issue to our attention and thanks also to @2300peterw for his comments and tag. Since there has been considerable communication regarding the Conexant ISST audio driver, I regret that HP Support was unhelpful. Since you indicate that the sound is now working due to a system restore, nevertheless, at your convenience, could you please provide me with your case number or serial number so that I can review the case notes. If the problem recurs, the issue needs to be escalated!

Symantec Anti-Virus incorrectly flags the above listed files as malware. Please migrate to Symantec definitions dated Sept 15 or later; the false detection has been removed in Rapid Release Sequence 187381 onwards.

After updating the Conexant driver package via SoftPaq ( refer to the Security Bulletin for latest SoftPaqs ) or Windows Update, older versions of MicTray.exe files may exist in several folders or sub-folders such as SWSETUP, Rollback and Temp.

Hello, I use Sound Forge Pro 10.0, everything was fine until yesterday when my computer performed a windows update, now I get the message "the windows classic wave driver audio device stereo mix Conexant ISST audio is missing or in use by another application", anyone know how to resolve this, thanks in advance for your assistance.
