HiJeff
I am using Acrobat 5.0. I uninstalled it, reinstalled - problem is still there. If you want to email me the 5.0 version - gen...@aol.comAnyone's else comments on this problem will be greatly appreciatedThanks
I tried printing like an image. Voila - worked nicely. Thanks for the tip
However, being stubborn that I am, I need to get to the bottom of what the cause of this problem is. It was printing fine when I first installed Acrobat. Now, when print like an image is not checked every pdf file (even acrobat help) is printed with squares, lines etc. What do you think is causing this problem? Thanks Mike
If "Print as Image" works, then it indicates that the problem is with your printer driver. Make sure you have the most up-to-date driver for your printer, and if you already do, then uninstall and reinstall the printer.--Mike Nitabach
For XP, make sure you're using the latest version of the printer driver. Also, when all else fails, try installing the HP LaserJet 4 or 4si (for duplex printers). This is a miracle driver and works for virtually ALL HP printers. Not to mention the fact that 300 dpi can be set. If you decide to download the latest HP driver for your specific printer, try the PCL5e version. I find it works exceptionally well. Especially for the 4000 series models. Once again, the PCL5e allows you to go down to 300dpi whereas the PCL6 only goes to 600dpi.
Hello - I have seen this issue posted here in years past. But I am struggling to find a root cause or solution. When we publish a course, all of the text looks fine when we open it locally. Most of the time, it also looks just fine on the web server.
However, occasionally when we send it to our web admins to post on a server, the fonts will be completely different, and contain some squares where letters should be. We're using Open Sans for the courses where I have seen the problem. See attached screenshots for the most recent example.
This has happened with both Storyline 3, and Storyline 360 (enabling modern text doesn't fix it).
It seems that after a couple of days, the problem somehow fixes itself. We have also seen it suddenly be fixed when moving it to a new folder on the server (however, we can't typically do that or we risk breaking numerous web object links, shortcuts, etc).
Does anyone have any thoughts on what might cause the server to display it incorrectly sometimes, but not all the time? It becomes a major issue for me when I'm trying to send it to my higher ups for review. I work for the Army, and I would rather not send this to a General and say "don't worry, it'll probably look right in a day or 2!" If I could determine the root cause of the problem, then my hope would be that we could prevent it from happening.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
I am wondering if it may be server cache related. I've been looking at the course on different computers - some on our base's network, and some on commercial internet - and clearing browser caches to start fresh. It seems the fonts are correct on some computers now, and even differ between browsers in a few cases. On one of mine in particular, it was showing the weird font a few hours ago on all the major browsers, and now it's not. I have no real knowledge of how servers are configured, but I would have to believe it has something to do with it.
It's looking like there is nothing I can do on the developer side to fix the issue - it would just be nice to understand more about it so that I can explain it, but on the plus side, at least it seems to resolve itself in relatively short time. At least for the server we're using.
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue! This shouldn't be happening. Are you willing to share your file with us? I'd like to test it on our end to investigate further. You can upload it here or privately in a support case. We'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete.
Hi Kelly,
Sorry for the delayed reply. I believe this issue is server related. About 4-5 hours after it occurred when our web team uploaded it to the server, the issue was suddenly gone on most of the computers I tested. By the next business day, it was gone completely. I think it must be related to the server cache - but it's hard to track down for sure. I'm not sure what I would be able to share with you to troubleshoot further, unless there is some indication of how the output in Articulate interacts with the server's cache - and I have no idea if that's even a thing?
Great to hear that you've narrowed down the possible cause! If you encounter the behavior again, don't hesitate to reach out to our support team by opening a case for further assistance so we can take a closer look at what's happening.
Recently bought new laptop and installed win8.1 64bit. Tried to print some documents in latvian language, but instead of printing the text as it is on document itself, printer prints non-english letters like ā ē ņ ķ as blank squares. Went to printer preferences in order to change to latvian language, but it doesn't exist on this printer. It printed everything well on previous laptop (win7 ultimate 64bit), so there should be some kind of missing software. Printer drivers are up to date and can't find anything in support as photosmart 2575v is in old printer list, therefore HP has deleted all info about it. Tried to go through some forums, but didn't find solution for problem I'm having at the moment. Any Ideas?
Adobe Acrobat did the trick at the end when I changed that file to a borderless photo. I think that basically I had this problem because it was a .doc file, but Firefox opened it as .pdf, so I automatically assumed that it's a .pdf file without even looking and since I don't have MS Word at the moment, Adobe had problems with recognizing it. Thanks for your post, I found it helpful
having an intermittant problem with both my HP printers (one laser & one inkjet). i've updated the printer drivers, but still get this problem - where little squares show up instead of numbers and sometimes letters.
i've read that the 'print job wants to use a character which is not present in the selected typeface (font) and character set' - which i kind of understand. but i don't understand how/why it just started happening (i've been using both these printers for several years).
I installed Bluemail a few days ago through snap. It works like a charm except for one thing : whenever I try to save an attached document to an email I have received, the window that pops up (which is supposed to allow me to chose where the file should be saved) is unreadable : all the letters it contains in the folder names are replaced by small square symbols, making it impossible for me to navigate through my folders.
Thanks for your answer. I understand why people tend to avoid snaps, flatpaks and app images. I usually always go for the version in the repositories myself and I resort to flatpaks, app images or snaps only when the app I am looking for does not exist in the official repositories. I also understand the reasons why developers could prefer using flatpak, snap or an App image to deliver their apps to Linux users.
I had already had a look at the pkgbuild and I had seen it was using the Snap.
I wondered if it really made sense to build an app from its snap version through the AUR. I am not sure to understand where the interest lays. Thanks for enlightening me in my journey to understanding Arch based systems better.
In this letter we discuss a least squares version for support vector machine (SVM) classifiers. Due to equality type constraints in the formulation, the solution follows from solving a set of linear equations, instead of quadratic programming for classical SVM's. The approach is illustrated on a two-spiral benchmark classification problem.
Same problem, half of text on a page suddenly became squares with Xs in them, sometimes whole pages were affected. The only thing to help was changing the font to something else, then changing it back manually. Took a lot of time, but less time than reformatting, reloading, and all the other things listed here. Some documents were created in Adobe, others were shared by clients. There was no consistency in the errors.
It is kind of mix, Acrobat Pro & Adobe Acrobat Reader are on one user's machine and Nitro PDF and Adobe Acrobat Reader are on a different machine and some have only acrobat reader ( basically every one has reader becuase its free ) . I'm not sure if it is a font issue on a computer, because the guy who has both nitro and reader, can see text in problematic file in nitro but not on adboe reader on same machine.
It is not happening with every PDF but some specific PDF's which were basically created from word or excel. The work around which is currently helping is to save such PDF's as type PDF/E and merging after that is not an problem.
We are sorry for the trouble and the delay in response. As described you are not able to view the PDF content and getting squares ad circles. It seems that the fonts were not properly embedded into the PDF file while creating from Word or Excel
The problem is we have some pdf files ,call it as source PDF files, which all looks good and no issues reading in any PDF viewer (acrobat reader, pro , nitro, chrome ) but when those source pdf files are merged in to a different file using acrobat pro , the merged file have this problem ,where we see circles and squares and also we see this circles and squares in the merged file in the place wher this source document was embedded. This issue is only seen in acrobat reader and pro but that mereged pdf looks fine when opened in Nitro and chrome.
I suspect this is an issue with merge in acrobat pro and we have seen this issue more with source pdf files which were generated with word document , but remember when we got that source PDF file created from word , we dont have the issue, only after merging in to a different PDF file using acrobat pro, this issue seems to happen in the merged file.
