Added 'treatment' (OGMS:0000090) and 'convalescence' (OGMS:0000091) in OGMS
v0.5
Could treatment be renamed "disorder treatment" for example? OBI just
started
discussing treatment as part of investigations - in this case there is no
intent to
cure, and it includes drug testing, chemical administration etc.
Lots of treatments aren't technically intended to cure. We know that
insulin
administration, pharmaceutical management of hypertension and asthma, etc,
etc all do
not cure.
And of course, OGMS definition of treatment thereby does not mention cure
at all.
I do not think phase I trials involve a treatment.
Would like to know more about your use cases and proposed definitions
of 'treatment'
in OBI, though.
Current definitions is "A processual entity whose completion is
hypothesized (by a
healthcare provider) to alleviate the signs and symptoms associated with a
disorder".
I was suggesting the label update to disambiguate between (from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treatment)
1. A type of therapy used to remedy a health problem
2. Experimental treatment, the levels of treatment factor(s) (variables
controlled by
the experimenter) applied
I think 1. is what OGMS aims at covering, while 2. would be in the scope of
OBI.
I don't understand definition #2, at least partly because it's circular
(defining
treatment in terms of 'treatment').
You don't know whether something is a treatment or not until after an
experiment
demonstrates efficacy. Seems odd to call it a 'treatment' before then.
