The stark cinematic portrayal of the destruction of Sylvia's family allows Micheaux to address one of the most volatile and controversial topics of his era: Negro lynching. This segment of the film is also the most action-packed and racially confrontational.
Porn set-ups with no payoff, basically -- six segments that illustrate "sexual tension" between guys, always imagined in about the same way ("one thirsting desperately, one oblivious" is the template here...) , always featuring actors in the 18-25 range. I've never known a mainstream movie to stare at men's crotches the way this one does.
The concept of this film with its six examples of sexual tension shared between co-directors had the potential to be an insightful revelation or at least an entertaining idea. As critics have observed elsewhere there was insufficient attention given to how varied is the expression of such tension among humans.
