More and more Americans are becoming disturbed by the limiting of our
rights that the country has seen since 9/11. The federal government
has increased its spying on groups from both the Right and the Left,
"gathering intelligence" on everyone from pro-lifers and gun owners,
to animal rights activists and anti-war protestors. The Occupy
movement has also been a target of police-state type crackdowns. So in
the spirit of mutual concern for our freedoms, Occupy Fort Myers is
inviting groups and individuals of all political orientations to put
aside our differences for one day, and come together for a small
informal rally to make a public stand for the Constitution and our
civil liberties this Friday Feb. 17th at 11am. All are welcome to
attend, regardless of political affiliation- anyone is welcome who
believes, as Benjamin Franklin said, that we should not trade freedom
for “security”.

The Lee County Freedom Rally will be held on the public sidewalk
across from the Fusion Center at 12481 Gateway Blvd Fort Myers, Friday
Feb. at 11am. Few people know that Lee County has its very own
high-tech “Fusion Center”, which in a nutshell is a federally-funded
multi-agency government surveillance and snooping center. The Fusion
Center would prefer to not have publicity, but we are going to make
the public aware of the threat that they pose to our freedoms by
demonstrating on the public sidewalk near them. There we will
demonstrate in a peaceful and legal manner, as well as sing patriotic
songs.

Since 9/11, the “war on terror” has become a pretext for restricting
freedoms and disregarding the Constitution. Already our government has
declared through the recent National Defense Authorization Act that
Americans may be sent to prison indefinitely without a trial. The
FBI’s own documents state that protests are considered “low-level
terrorism.” Whatever your feelings about the Occupy movement, you are
welcome. We cannot sit idly at home and let our country go any further
down the road to a police state.

Please RSVP if possible. If you would like a flyer to distribute,
email me and I will send you one in a Word attachment. I've only been
able to email a small number of people, and this is kind of last
minute, so please spread the word to those you know who would be
interested!
