Good afternoon,

The Department of Near Eastern Studies at The Ohio State University will offer the following four online courses in Arabic language and culture in an intensive 8-week summer session (9 June-31 July).

Interested students should contact the NELC Academic Program Coordinator, Jeremie Smith, at smith...@osu.edu, for more information.

Arabic 1101 (4 credits) - This course focuses on developing the ability to use Arabic functionally and communicatively in context, intensive oral interaction with instructor and fellow students, and the basics of the writing system. Open to all students!

Arabic 1103 (4 credits) - Building on previously acquired functional abilities; using Arabic to express opinion and feelings; oral interaction in the classroom; reading authentic texts or various genres.  Prerequisite: 1102, or placement exam.

Arabic 2241 (3 credits) - This course explores the intersecting political, artistic, and intellectual currents and practices that have shaped contemporary Arab cultures. It is organized as a survey of different cultural phenomena in modern Arab societies and diasporas including: the Arabic language, music, poetry, law, cinema & television, art, and more. We will examine various meanings of the term "culture" and critically evaluate different approaches to studying Arab culture. This course takes an active and intercultural learning approach. Taught in English. OSU GE Culture and Ideas and GE Diversity: Global Studies course

Arabic 4120 (3 credits) - In this course students work with various traditional genres of Arabic print and broadcast media, in addition to newer internet-based ones (blogs, vlogs, podcasts). In weekly thematic units and activities students work exclusively with authentic materials to develop linguistic tools, techniques, and strategies to comprehend and discuss regional and international current events as well as issues in politics, economics, society, and culture. Activities include following and summarizing internet broadcasts, blog writing, and oral presentations and discussions. Taught in Arabic.  Prerequisite: Arabic 2104, or placement exam.

Students who are not currently OSU students must also apply for eligibility to enroll in OSU courses through the OSU Extended Education program.  The Office of Extended Education has separate application deadlines for non-current OSU students to be eligible for summer coursework.  More information, including eligibility and application requirements and instructions, are available at odee.osu.edu/extended-education.

Best wishes,
