Applying Critical Disability Studies in Language Learning : Co-learning through a VR Virtual Museum
Presented by Dr. Claudia Quevedo-Webb and Dr. Cesar Enrique Hoyos Álvarez
Our presentation focuses on a joint initiative involving undergraduate students from Northwestern University and a nonprofit organization in Cantabria, Spain, dedicated to assisting individuals with Down syndrome and their families. At the heart of this project is the development of a virtual museum that will display artwork created by both the students and nonprofit members. The lesson plan developed for this project emphasizes collaboration, guiding students and nonprofit participants through a series of co-learning activities (Wei, 2024) utilizing Virtual Reality (VR) to transcend traditional classroom limits.
Moreover, this project aims to showcase the transformative power of inclusive, collaborative teaching methods imbued with critical pedagogies. It illustrates how such initiatives can redefine educational practices, fostering more inclusive and interconnected learning environments.
