Hola,

For those using the AAPPL for the Seal of biliteracy, are you using the Novice & Intermediate (Form A) or the Intermediate & Advanced (Form B)?  I'm guessing the former, but curious.  I'm looking at both this and the STAMP 4S Test.

Hi Colleen and OFLA colleagues,

For the Seal of Biliteracy, you use Form B of the AAPPL test.

I just checked our ODE list of assessments and see that we don't have Form B specified on there, so I will add it.

Thanks for asking about this.

Have a good weekend,

Kathy

Hi again, OFLA friends,

After a few questions from teachers about my response below and using AAPPL Form B for the Seal of Biliteracy:

For the Seal of Biliteracy using the AAPPL test, students need to score at least an I-5 in all 4 skills.  The Form A test results only go up to I-4, which is why it can't be used for the Seal of Biliteracy.  Here is a sample score report for Form A and B.

If you're using the AAPPL for other assessment purposes, then of course you could choose whichever Form (A or B) works best for your students' current level.

Please follow up with me if you have any questions about this.

Thanks,

Kathy

Kathy, thank you for the information.  I am replying all, because this may pertain to many.  We currently give the STAMP to test for the seal.  Is it correct, that with the STAMP, a student may only need IH (6) in three categories, but can get an IM (5) in one category?  If so, why is it that you must get IH in all the categories on the AAPPL and not one IM category like on the STAMP?  Also, is it correct that the AAPPL tests interpersonal modes, but the STAMP does not?  Are there any other major differences?  We have not tested with AAPPL so I am curious how it compares to STAMP in degree of difficulty.  Any feedback would be appreciated.  May everyone have a great holiday break!

Hello again,

I'm giving the AAPPL test for the first time tomorrow and was a bit confused by one part of the proctoring instructions.  It said at one point that there was no time limit on the sections, but then said that kids often run out of time on Presentational Writing.  Is the Presentational Writing portion timed and the others are not?

It is not timed but there are a lot of questions and sometimes kids just write and write, meaning they run out of class time or testing session time.
I tell my students they aren't writing essays.

Hi Everyone,

Just a friendly reminder to everyone that, if the results of an assessment will be used to qualify your students for the seal of biliteracy, you cannot proctor your own students' testing.  To ensure the validity of proficiency testing efforts, students should be proctored by someone else - a district testing coordinator, another teacher, an administrator, etc. Because seal of biliteracy applicants are testing for a state recognized credential, the same testing security measures at play on the English side of the biliteracy equation should be utilized on the world language side of things. Your district testing coordinators should be consulted to ensure the validity of the seal of biliteracy testing process.

Many regards,
