Idistinguish this category from others by several measures. First, does the book and writing appeal to non-anglers? If it does, that definitely says something. Second, what do other accomplished authors who have written acclaimed books have to say about it? The authors on my list below are real craftsmen with words. And finally, was it interesting enough to be made into a movie?

The Longest Silence is a series of keenly observed essays about the lessons and insights McGuane gleaned from a lifetime spent fishing. James Harrison, a peripatetic poet, novelist, and essayist who himself wrote about fishing and whose novel Legends of the Fall was made into a movie, calls it the best book on angling of all time. I must agree. In his essays, McGuane takes us around the world fishing for tarpon to trout and introduces us to some memorable characters along the way. McGuane, who lives in Montana and continues to write and fish, wrote several other notable books on the outdoors and fishing including his debut novel, The Sporting Club, a dark comedy about the intergenerational conflict between young whippersnapper Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation. Sound familiar Millenials and GenXers? Another good read, Ninety Two In The Shade, a tale of a young fishing guide running into trouble in the Florida Keys was made into a movie starring Peter Fonda and Warren Oates.

How can any angler resist a book that mixes fly fishing, family, and baseball? However, this is a book that has probably been read by more non-anglers than any other on this list. The main character Gus is a child fishing prodigy who after he graduates from school sets out to fish his brains out according to a rigourous schedule on the mythical Tamanawis River. After he finds the body of a dead angler, Gus starts his real journey in life, finding love along the way. The author Duncan wrote several other acclaimed novels, and The River Why was turned into a movie starring Zach Gifford, Dallas Roberts, and William Hunt that unfortunately did not live up to the book.

I was looking for a book to gift my beloved but it was challenging to look up with so many suggestions online, not to mention most of them luring you into some reading sites or download apps, until I found this article. For someone who has not even tried fishing, what a relief to find this list!

I am looking for a book I read to my wife each night when we lived in Montana. It wa so funny we almost fell out of bed laughing when this guy author? hooked a poodle on a back cast). Hope you can help.

Chad is owner and publisher at Harrington Interactive Media and serves as a deacon of teaching at Harpeth Christian Church in Franklin, Tennessee. He holds degrees from Ozark Christian College and Asbury Theological Seminary and is a coauthor of The Revolutionary Disciple and Dedicated and the author of Your Spiritual Formation Plan.

Chesterton has been vital for my spiritual development so I must include his Orthodoxy. For me, he lays out the basics of the gospel in this book, and he lands in a refreshing place about the role of beauty and mirth in the life of a Christian. Journey with Chesterton, a friend and mentor of sorts for C.S. Lewis, as you read this intriguing book.

A short classic on Christian community, Life Together provides the basics of how we must live together as disciples of Jesus. This little book serves as a sort of handbook to get you ready to enter into a deeper life of fellowship with other Christians. Bonhoeffer wrote this from the perspective of a member of the underground church in Nazi Germany, but his principles still translate well to our lives today.

Jim Cymbala, pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, recounts the story of what God did in the hearts and lives of the people at his church to bring, indeed, Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire to his church through the Holy Spirit. Be inspired to pray with your church to do something special as you read the story of one church that experienced a revival among its people through prayer.

In 2013, the year Dallas Willard passed on to the next life, I read every book he wrote, and this was the most impactful book for me. In Hearing God, Willard helps Christians discern how to cultivate a conversational relationship with God. I had never heard anyone articulate with such clarity, conviction, and practical sense how this can be done. My life is forever changed because of what God did in me as a result of reading this book.

This is one of the best primers on core spiritual disciplines of the Christian life. Mentored by Dallas Willard, Richard Foster offers a modern classic on how to activate your faith through formation practices. His writing balances both the practical and theological to give everyday Christians an introduction into important disciplines of the faith. Celebration of Discipline helps Christians enjoy encountering God through practices that often involve sacrifice, even pain. Encountering God is indeed worth celebrating, and Foster helps readers do just that.

Life comes quickly, which can involve great pain and heartache. John Mark Hicks tells his stories of loss, pain, and heartache in Anchors for the Soul. This makes my list because the book will be relevant and vital for most Christians at one point or another. It just so happened that within a year of publishing this book for Dr. Hicks, I experienced a tragedy of my own when our daughter Katharine was stillborn. This resource, along with its accompanying video course, helped me navigate my family through the pain of loss. This resource also equips Christians to love others who are currently experiencing any form of loss.

These are many of the books that were precisely what the doctor had ordered when I read them. I hope at least a few of them will be that for you as you determine the next book to help you along your discipleship journey.

We rolled up to the school ringing our bells, panniers loaded with books, and 250 kids went absolutely nuts, cheering like we were celebrities. For the first time in almost 20 years, I felt that rush of pure joy only experienced on a bike.

We unloaded the books while the mayor spoke and the kids took a pledge to read their books at least twice, to stay active and to be safe. Then, the kids descended on the tables to select three books to take home. We were treated to big smiles, high-fives, hugs and expressions of thanks. The kids asked questions about our bikes. We gave them stickers and bookmarks and safety cards.

My professional work at Bicycle Colorado connects me with communities across the state, while my personal volunteer work connects me with own local advocacy organization, the Wheat Ridge Active Transportation Advisory Team (the ATATs).

The ATATs encourage our city to continue bike-friendly investments and encourage our neighbors to ride and walk more. Scott DeJong (one of our amazing community volunteers) suggested Ride for Reading as a way to engage with local youth. This national program connects students in Title 1 schools with education on staying active mentally and physically.

Preparing for Ride for Reading took a lot of work. We solicited book donations from our community in partnership with local businesses. We organized volunteer riders including the mayor, our public works director, Wheat Ridge Police Officers, a couple visiting from North Carolina and a local author. We coordinated with the school. We took time off from work.

Rachel works with agencies, organizations and communities to ensure Colorado becomes the best state in the nation for riding bikes. Her passion for all forms of active transportation fuels opportunities for successful collaboration. When not talking shop, Rachel enjoys hunting for street art with her family and volunteering in her community.

This really was an amazing experience. You did a wonderful job of capturing that here. I share your joy of bicycling and have many memorable times as a kid and throughout my life involving cycling. To share this joy with kids (and tie it in with reading no less!) just takes it to another level. Thank you for all that you do!

This page provides lists of best-selling books and book series to date and in any language. "Best-selling" refers to the estimated number of copies sold of each book, rather than the number of books printed or currently owned. Comics and textbooks are not included in this list. The books are listed according to the highest sales estimate as reported in reliable, independent sources.

Many books lack comprehensive sales figures as book selling and reselling figures prior to the introduction of point of sale equipment was based on the estimates of book sellers, publishers or the authors themselves. For example, one of the one volume Harper Collins editions of The Lord of the Rings was recorded to have sold only 967,466 copies in the UK by 2009 (the source does not cite the start date),[8] but at the same time the author's estate claimed global sales figures of in excess of 150 million. Accurate figures are only available from the 1990s[citation needed] and in western nations such as US, UK, Canada and Australia, although figures from the US are available from the 1940s. Further, e-books have not been included as out of copyright texts are often available free in this format. Examples of books with claimed high sales include The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas,[9] Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes,[10] Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en[11] and The Lord of the Rings[12] (which has been sold as both a three volume series, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, as a single combined volume and as a six volume set in a slipcase) by J. R. R. Tolkien. Hence, in cases where there is too much uncertainty, they are excluded from the list.

Having sold more than 600 million copies worldwide,[13] Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling is the best-selling book series in history. The first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, has sold in excess of 120 million copies,[14] making it one of the best-selling books of all time. As of June 2017, the series has been translated into 85 languages,[15] placing Harry Potter among history's most translated literary works. The last four books in the series consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books of all time, and the final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, sold roughly fifteen million copies worldwide within twenty-four hours of its release.[16][17] With twelve million books printed in the first US run, it also holds the record for the highest initial print run for any book in history.[18][19]
