KeePassXis an application for people with extremly high demands on secure personal data management. It has a light interface, is cross platform and published under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
KeePassX saves many different information e.g. user names, passwords, urls, attachments and comments in one single database. For a better management user-defined titles and icons can be specified for each single entry. Furthermore the entries are sorted in groups, which are customizable as well. The integrated search function allows to search in a single group or the complete database.
KeePassX offers a little utility for secure password generation. The password generator is very customizable, fast and easy to use. Especially someone who generates passwords frequently will appreciate this feature.
The complete database is always encrypted either with AES (alias Rijndael) or Twofish encryption algorithm using a 256 bit key. Therefore the saved information can be considered as quite safe. KeePassX uses a database format that is compatible with KeePass Password Safe. This makes the use of that application even more favourable.
Originally KeePassX was called KeePass/L for Linux since it was a port of Windows password manager Keepass Password Safe. After KeePass/L became a cross platform application the name was not appropriate anymore and therefore, on 22 March 2006 it has been changed.
Hi
Im new on Bitwarden. I used another Password Manager but the program turned useless.
I have just a question.
Is it possible to store all my Passwords just locally and not storing them on a server?
Keepass is written in C# so it targeted at Windows, though it can be used on Mac and Linux with Mono (which provides the functionality to run C# code). The file format is one of the well established formats and is used by a range of other password managers. For Android you can use KeepassDX, or Keepass2android. For iOS there is Keepassium and Strongbox.
PasswordSafe (pwsafe) is a different program, but similar. Very basic, passwords can be copy/pasted, autotyped or drag-and-drop. There is no browser integration. This has a great feature in that you can set up the password rules for each entry, so if you need to change the password frequently it is very easy (Keepass has some similar functionality, but not as good as Password Safe). Having no external interfaces makes its attack surface as small as it can be. Available for Windows, Mac and some Linux. The file format is also used across several password managers.
Thanks for any reply. I dont have a self hosted version of Bitwarden. Iwas using Roboform but when the trial is expired, there are anoying popup messages. I found Enpass, which is completely local host password manager.
For now it is working fine and free. Im also using KeepassXC, but there is sometimes an issue with installed version and browser.
Maybe this will help someone.
I do two-way radio systems and to program the radios I have two laptops: Win-7 and Win-10.
I also have Win-7 and Win-10 desktops at the shop, and a Win 7 desktop at home.
... and an Android cellphone.
The home desktop and Android cellphone "remember" most of my passwords, and I installed KeePass 2 on my desktop at home to migrate into a password manager.
I poked around the KeePass menus on the desktop and do not see any way to import the existing passwords from the Firefox browser. Once i see that working and trust it then I'll install KeePass on my cell and change the various email / web site passwords.
I'm probably going to need help to get the Android cell to mate with the data base created by the desktop.
It sounds like you're on the right track with setting up KeePass to manage your passwords across your devices. To import passwords from Firefox into KeePass, you'll typically need to export your passwords from Firefox as a CSV or XML file, then import that file into KeePass. The exact steps may vary slightly depending on the versions of Firefox and KeePass you're using, but there are many tutorials available online that can guide you through the process.
Once you've successfully imported your passwords into KeePass on your desktop, you'll want to sync the KeePass database with your Android cellphone. One way to do this is by using a cloud storage service like Dropbox or Google Drive to store your KeePass database file. Then, you can use a KeePass-compatible app on your Android phone to access the database stored in the cloud.
There are several KeePass-compatible apps available for Android, such as KeePass2Android or Strongbox. These apps allow you to open and manage your KeePass database on your phone, providing secure access to your passwords wherever you go.
If you encounter any difficulties along the way, don't hesitate to reach out for assistance. Setting up a password manager can take some time and effort initially, but the added security and convenience it provides are well worth it in the long run.
i would like to have a password manager installed on my NAS.
it seems that keepas could fit my requirement.
I've installed keepass2android on my phone with Android 10 firmware and i'm able to communicate with my qnap and open the database.
I'm not able to call keepass2android when i'm browsing with my phone in order to add an existing password or insert a new one to be saved in the databes placed in the Qnap NAS.
Thank you,
Cosimo.
KeePass2 Andrloid is a KeePass compatible password manager that can read and write KeePass files and can share files via many cloud servers with other devices running either KeePass2Android and Keepass.
You have not actually said why you want to put your KeePass2Andriod database file on your NAS. It would only make sense to me if you were using your NAS as a cloud service and sycronising your KeePass database to it. If you just want a backup the the KeePass database is just a file.
Hi,
thanks for your replies.
My idea is to use my NAS as cloud storage to be in sync with all my devices such as laptop and smarphone.
I'm able to let communicate the smartphone with the DB place in my NAS and mantain it in sync.
Yesterday i succeded with the autofill using chrome on my smartphone.
Now i need to install the related plugin in my laptop then i think I'm fine.
KeePass Password Safe is a free and open-source password manager primarily for Windows. It officially supports macOS and Linux operating systems through the use of Mono.[1] Additionally, there are several unofficial ports for Windows Phone, Android, iOS, and BlackBerry devices, which normally work with the same copied or shared (remote) password database.[2][3][4][5][6] KeePass stores usernames, passwords, and other fields, including free-form notes and file attachments, in an encrypted file. This file can be protected by any combination of a master password, a key file, and the current Windows account details. By default, the KeePass database is stored on a local file system (as opposed to cloud storage).[7]
KeePass comes in two different variants: KeePass 1.x and KeePass 2.x. Although the 1.x variant is the former variant it is supported indefinitely: Dominik Reichl: "2.x isn't the successor of 1.x, and 1.x isn't dead".[8] KeePass 2.x has a different software basis in C# instead of the former C++. Mainly communication features are extended in KeePass 2.x: authentication with the Windows user account, remote and shared database editing as well as many plugins allowing communication and authentication with different web browsers, databases and more.[9][10]
KeePass 1.x and 2.x support a number of plugins, although 2.x allows more plugins.[10] It has a password generator and synchronization function, supports two-factor authentication, and has a Secure Desktop mode. It can use a two-channel auto-type obfuscation feature to offer additional protection against keyloggers.[11] KeePass can import from over 30 other most commonly used password managers.[11]
A 2017 Consumer Reports article described KeePass as one of the four most widely used password managers (alongside 1Password, Dashlane and LastPass), being "popular among tech enthusiasts" and offering the same level of security as non-free competitors.[12]
A 2019 Independent Security Evaluators study described KeePass as well as other widely used password managers as being unable to control Windows 10's tendency to leave passwords in cleartext in RAM after they are displayed using Windows controlled GUI.[13] In addition, several GitHub projects (KeeFarce, KeeThief, Lazanga) specifically attack a running KeePass to steal all data when the host is compromised. KeePass cannot prevent password theft and, as Dominik Reichl, the administrator of KeePass, states, "neither KeePass nor any other password manager can magically run securely in a spyware-infected, insecure environment."[14]
The password list is saved by default as a .kdbx file, but it can be exported to .txt, HTML, XML and CSV.[15] The XML output can be used in other applications and re-imported into KeePass using a plugin. The CSV output is compatible with many other password safes like the commercial closed-source Password Keeper and the closed-source Password Agent. Also, the CSVs can be imported by spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice/LibreOffice Calc.
KeePass supports simultaneous access and simultaneous changes to a shared password file by multiple computers (often by using a shared network drive), however there is no provisioning of access per-group or per-entry.[17] As of May 2014, there are no plugins available to add provisioned multi-user support, but there exists a proprietary password server (Pleasant Password Server) that is compatible with the KeePass client and includes provisioning.[18]
KeePass can minimize itself and type the information of the currently selected entry into dialogs, webforms, etc. KeePass has a global auto-type hot key. When KeePass is running in the background (with an unlocked database) and user presses down the hotkey, it looks up the selected (or correct) entry and enters every login and/or password characters sequence.[19] All fields, such as title, username, password, URL, and notes, can be drag and dropped into other windows.[citation needed]
