simple. Here's a show preview from Matt Fernandes of
stltoday.com:
Visiting all the way from Bremerton, WA, Mike Herrera's Tumbledown
will light up the Off Broadway tonight with their irreverent cowpunk.
They're playing in support of their new album, Empty Bottle.
Herrera's other Northwest band, MxPx, has criss-crossed the globe
plenty of times playing straight ahead punk that has appealed to the
masses. He has now turned his energies to the music of more Southern
climes.
"I fell in love with country early on," said Herrera, who peppers his
tunes with themes of drinking, fighting, gambling and run-ins with the
law that are mostly biographical. "I've been touring all of my life,
so I've picked up things from all over place, whether it's Japan,
Australia or the deep South."
As much as any classic records, Herrera cites a book, Woody Guthrie: A
Life, as a being a major influence for the project.
"I just like the way life was in those days - semi-modern yet a lot of
jumpin' on trains and meeting people and telling stories," said
Herrera. "I can't pretend to have anywhere near as interesting a life
as his, but I try to emulate him and go where the wind takes me. When
I'm staying on floors and out in towns with nothing to do, I try to
not to fall into the typical rock rut of playing video games, stopping
only at truck stops and not interacting."
Come early tonight and you may get the chance to share a beer and a
few laughs with him.
