Katiyabaaz (English: Electricity Thief, however this fails to capture the pun in the Hindi title), released under the alternate title Powerless for English-speaking audiences,[4] is a 2013 Indian Hindi documentary film directed by Deepti Kakkar and Fahad Mustafa about the problem of power theft in Kanpur. Released in India on 22 August 2014, the film is shot in Kanpur city, which faces long power cuts,[5][6] giving rise to the profession of Loha Singh, a local electricity thief or katiyabaaz in localities like Chaman Ganj. He provides illegal electricity connections to people, while Ritu Maheshwari, MD of KESCo, Kanpur Electricity Supply Company, tries to tackle the issue of rampant electricity theft.[7][8]

The film's co-director, Fahad Mustafa, originally from Kanpur, researched the subject for six months before he started filming. However, they came across Loha Singh, the "katiyabaaz" (electricity thief) around whom the film is based, only after the shooting had already started, and another katiyabaaz had backed out in the last moment. Loha Singh, himself was initially apprehensive about allowing himself be filmed, as he thought it to be a sting operation on his work or the crew to be of the Dabangg film series. The rumour about the latter, drew large crowds to filming locations, hampering production. The fact that some of the crew were foreigners also created much curiosity. Gradually Loha Singh and the locals became comfortable with the film crew. The crew shot candid conversations, several individual stories and the crippling effects of electricity crisis in the area on the common man, local industries as well as small business owners.[12][13]

Deepanjana Pal of Firstpost called the film a "beautifully-shot documentary".[18] Leading film critics gave it glowing reviews. Rajeev Masand called it a "Slice of Life" film.[19] Anupama Chopra referred to it as a "sad love letter to Kanpur".[20] Mihir Fadnavis reviewed the film for DNA India, where he called it "more hilarious, insightful and gorgeous than a feature film".[21] Mumbai's leading lifestyle website, Mumbai Boss, called Katiyabaaz a "crackling documentary!"[22]

"Phantom Films is an established production house and it will help to spread awareness about the documentary film Katiyabaaz among the audience. I saw this film and I loved it. Then we decided to support this film. I would love to direct a documentary film if any good subject comes my way," Motwane said here. Shot over two years, the film also captures the elections in the State. The issue of electricity became a huge political controversy during the polls, the brunt of which was borne by Ritu who was transferred when there was a change in regime ultimately. Loha, at the end of the film, can be seen telling his mother that he knows no other job but katiyabaazi and continues to lead his itinerant life.

In Katiyabaaz, they explore how Kanpur residents (or for that matter elsewhere in India) survive long hours -- sometimes 15 or more at a stretch -- of power cuts, using small generators and stealing electricity from neighbours. The latter strategy uses specialists, essentially electricity thieves who are referred to as katiyabaaz in the city.

You have three main characters -- Loha Singh, a katiyabaaz; a local MLA and IAS officer Ritu Maheshwari, the first lady chief of the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company. What did it take for you to get them to speak so honestly?

Riding high on critical acclaim and accolades, it hardly came as a surprise when filmmakers Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl and producer Madhu Mantena decided to release the documentary under their banner, Phantom. "You will love Loha Singh for who he is. You want to see him win," says Motwane.

Three years since Katiyabaaz first released, Loha Singh continues to make ends meet as a 'katiyabaaz', a power thief. The film's theatrical release-on August 22-saw Loha Singh step onto an airplane for the first time to come to Mumbai for a publicity shoot. He greeted the directors at the airport with a big grin on his face and a tiny suitcase in his hands. Initially nervous for the shoot, conducted by photographer Colston Julian, he is unfazed by all the attention surrounding the release. "He's very removed from the cinematic world," says Kakkar. "The film itself is not the biggest threat. Life is too real for him."

Where do I start from? Ok, let me try. So, Blue is the warmest colour is the story of a 15 year old girl (seriously!?) who is curious about her sexuality when she falls in love in the very first sight with a blue haired tomboy, Emma. It is the story of their love, passion, separation and denouement like no other.

Now, this came as a surprise. One, I did not expect I would love it so much. Two, it was not even a feature film! I know that sounds a little stupid. But you have to watch it to believe me. Powerless is not really a docudrama but gives you a feel of it and strikes the right chords with its effective story telling.

The film is an objective take on the issue of habitual power cuts in Kanpur that goes up to 15 hours a day. While Loha, one of the many (but one the best too) katiyabaaz (an electrician who steals electricity), plays Robin-hood figure by charging the rich to provide free power connections in poor neighbourhoods. On the other hand is the first female chief of KESCO (Kanpur electricity supply company), Ritu who has vowed to clean up all illegal electricity connections, a first step forward to eliminate powerlessness.
