Here’s the relevant Sierra Club policy on this issue.

Hi Sara,
From what I have read, the digestion approach seems to be a decent alternatiive.  In many instances, the gas is burned locally for energy rather than being captured for use elsewhere.  Taking care to "not let the perfect be the enemy of the good," this seems like a pretty good alternative to incineration or spreading the waste on farmland.  I've heard opposition to digestion on the grounds that it will help factory farms stay in business or grow but, personally, I don't think our agenda should expand tangentially to trying to put these operations out of business because it's unrealistic and perpetuates the status quo or a worse solution.

Hi,

Here is an interesting idea for financing energy efficiency improvements-- utility makes loan at 3-4% and homeowner pays it back with a charge on the utility bill that is likely to be less than the money saved by reduced use. Painless!

And, here is an article about anaerobic digestion of animal waste.  Sounds good but does anyone know if they can keep the methane produced in the pipes?

I'm guessing that there is no perfect solution to the chicken poop problem.  Is something like this a good compromise?  If any of you have a good article that would bring me up to speed on digestion/composting of animal waste, I'd be grateful if you could send it to me.

Thanks!
Sara
