#RememberingJeanette

Two Years Later

Dear Friends,

We all think of Jeanette often, and December marks a special time of year for us to reflect on her incredible life and legacy. A life and legacy that are truly outsized for her 32 years on this earth. Jeanette continues to make the world a better place through her lasting impact on each of us and the opportunity created for others by her and for her.

This year, in December, we ask you to take a moment to remember Jeanette and honor her memory by doing something special. It can be an act of kindness or advocacy in her memory, a gift to one of the scholarships in her name for #GivingTuesday (Dec. 3rd), or a special gathering of friends to share your favorite Jeanette stories. Whatever it is, we hope you rejoice in the good Jeanette created while with us and create a little more in the process.

This email contains several updates on efforts related to our collective honoring of Jeanette's legacy and we are grateful to everyone who plays a part--big and small.

Sincerely,
Team Jeanette

UC Hastings College of Law Scholarship update...

Jeanette M. Acosta Memorial Scholarship

$136,925 raised!

The scholarship continues to grow thanks to the generosity of Jeanette's friends and family.

We are excited to share that the first $5,000 award for Jeanette’s Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a first-year law school student in April of 2020. One of the criteria to qualify for the scholarship is that the student demonstrate being active in fighting for social justice and helping the Latino community. The awardee will be named a Jeanette M. Acosta Scholar throughout their education at UC Hastings.

Special thanks to Catalina Lozano, UC Hastings professor, the La Raza Law Student Association, and Hastings College of Law administration staff for their support in promoting and facilitating the scholarship.

In order to grow the endowed scholarship, we continue to encourage giving as you can.

Advocacy update...

The Jeanette Acosta Invest in Women's Health Act of 2019

As a reminder, the Jeanette Acosta Invest In Women's Health Act will:

  • Expand access to preventive and life-saving cancer screenings
  • Increase funding for healthcare clinics serving populations most at-risk
  • Improve training for treating low-income women and women of color
Thanks to our collective efforts, the House bill filed by Congressman Jimmy Gomez, has 46 co-sponsors and the Senate bill, filed by Senator Patty Murray, has 12 co-sponsors! The House bill is assigned to the Energy and Commerce Committee in the House of Representatives for review and vote by the Health Subcommittee and then by the full Energy and Commerce Committee. It has not yet been reviewed.

Huge thanks to Congressman Jimmy Gomez and Senator Patty Murray, Carly Rush, Charlie Arnowitz, and Eric T. Harris.

Mayfield Senior School scholarship update...

Jeanette M. Acosta ’04 Memorial Scholarship for Latina Students

Jeanette graduated from Mayfield Senior School, an outstanding Catholic college preparatory high school for young women. Upon returning to speak as an alumna, she advocated for the school to create scholarships to benefit deserving Latina students.
In April 2018, Jeanette was awarded posthumously the school’s esteemed Cornelia Connelly Alumna Award. It was at this award event that the campaign was announced for the Jeanette M. Acosta ’04 Memorial Scholarship for Latina Students.

The scholarship is in its second year helping a deserving Latina student at Mayfield Senior School, Pasadena, California. The first awardee for Jeanette’s Memorial Scholarship is Destiny Inzunza ’22 who will receive an annual scholarship through her senior year.

Mayfield Senior School has the goal of making the scholarship an endowed scholarship. To date, $36,261 has been raised from 144 individuals!

Please consider making a gift to support additional Latina students in gaining access to Mayfield's college preparatory education.

Much gratitude to Angela Howell, Director of Development, staff, faculty, students, and friends for their continuing efforts to build and implement Jeanette's Memorial Scholarship at Mayfield.

"When my beloved friend Jeanette Acosta and I backpacked through Mexico in 2010 we dreamed about returning to Mexico in the future to witness the incredible monarch butterfly migration in Michoacán, Mexico—my grandpa Caballero’s home state... While Jeanette passed away to the spirit world in 2017, I held her close to my heart this week while visiting the beautiful monarch sanctuaries of El Rosario and Cerro Pelón."   -Leecee
