Linked below is a carbon fibre body I just finished. I've been working on a process of printing molds for resin infusion, and reinforcing the key stress points with 3d printed parts of a model (in this case the sound bar, sound post, and top/bottom hole for the carbon tube). This is my third attempt, and I'm happy with the result. I still am getting some pinholing during the resin infusion, but I think I've tracked down what the cause is and will have it fixed on test four.

So what does it sound like? I have no idea - I don't know how to play the violin!

That's impressive! Did you get the sound post in the middle of the body too? That's pretty important for getting the sound to vibrate in the whole body (or something like that :) )

I've been thinking about using my CNC to mill out portions of the body from wood and then glue the pieces together. I don't know if that would work though.

Did you make this out of different pieces and then put them together or did you somehow do the whole thing at once? Did you take any videos of the manufacturing process? I'd love to see that if you did!

Mark

Yeah, I second Mark's comments. That is a thing of beauty! I also would love to know more about the process.

I would be very interested in stringing that body up to test it. What do you say? I'll pay for shipping!

Thank you! David, are you in PDX this weekend? I could bring the violin by if you are. I’m supposed to leave for the east coast late Sunday, and my spouse (whose already out there) really wants to play it.

The sound bar and sound post are definitely in there, as well as a full single wall back/sides, and the neck is just printed and sanded.I printed them at 100% infill using CarbonX PETG (I used this for all printed parts).

I didn’t do the whole thing at once. Over the course of 2ish weeks I overmolded the sides, full back, and parts of the top. I am working on a full mold version, but it’s not quite ready yet. I need to get a more fluid resin, because I’m getting some not so great pinholing and voids when I do the resin infusion.

I hope this info is helpful; I’m sorry if I seem vague about it. Some of the techniques I used are what I learned when I was working for a local company whose name sounds like “Mikey”, and I’m a little hesitant to share too much info/pictures because they are very litigious. This won’t be a problem for the fully molded version because I am developing that from the ground up.
