Hi,

Thought this tidbit would be of interest to oertxt group.. The DCC project below has done work on collection level descriptions which is at least one use-case for oer.txt?

Best,

Steve

Hi,

The IMLS DCC project has done extensive work on collection level descriptions, on metadata creation practices, metadata quality and on getting local institutions to share their collections at item level through OAI-PMH. The metadata formats used are either Dublin Core or cultural heritage formats. The project started with the concept of having collections digitized with IMLS funding in a registry. Thus, collection level description was a straight forward way of achieving this. It became a project to bring heritage collection to the outside world through making them interoperable and providing access through the IMLS DCC interface.
It is a very interesting collaboration between researchers and support staff. There are certainly potential connections with the learning registry, both in terms of content and in terms of experience and on going research.

Hi,

Here’s some good input from Marsha Semmel current director at IMLS about a digital library collection project. Run out of Illinois and connected to the European Digital Library. Anyone here know anything about this? Seems like yet another deep source of good resources that I’ve never heard of.. Very possible to ask them to come online to the Learning Registry if that makes sense all around.

Any input or info appreciated,

Steve

Steve,

Here is info on our collections registry project.

Collections and Content Registry and Opening History Database

IMLS began building a database for digital collections and content through a cooperative agreement awarded in 2002.  Led by a research and development team at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, the project aggregates metadata from library, archives and museum collections across the United States using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).  This protocol is also being used by the European Digital Library and other large-scale digital content aggregations.  Initially, the registry included only resources created through IMLS National Leadership Grants.  However, it is now adding content from a variety of other sources, including State libraries which have aggregated content from cultural heritage institutions in their states.  The aggregation now has approximately 900 collections and more than 1,000,000 item-level records (some collections, such as many photo collections, provide only collection-level descriptions).  The Opening History aggregation, consisting primarily of unique resources such as library special collections, museum collections, and archival resources, is now the largest curated online resource for American history and is continuing to expand as more content is added.

The UIUC project team will meet with representatives of Europeana in 2011 to exchange information on their experiences with using the OAI-PMH protocol and also to discuss potential ways to share content, as the long history of emigration from Europe to the US has created interest in online historical resources across both continents.
