Hey --

One of the our developers asked about whether you should be able to replace an image in a document through some specific mechanism, rather than just deleting the image and uploading a new one.

How important is it to have a "replace" mechanism? What use case would make that far superior to delete and reupload?

I know that I have seen it somewhere, but when I surveyed Google Docs, Open Office, and Blogger I couldn't figure out  a way to replace an existing image. I clicked on the image and also right-clicked. I may have missed it, but I would have ended up deleting and uploading.

I can basically think of this one use case: I have uploaded an image and created a really good caption, title, and alternative description, and now I realize that I have one with a resolution that I would prefer to use. I don't want to lose all that metadata. But I don't think I would choose to try to support that use case over a simple interface that works for more common cases.

Am I missing "replace" in all these other interfaces? Is this high priority to support?

Kathi, I think Wordpress allows you to replace an image? (Or rather, change the url of the image, assuming the new image is already in your media gallery). Maybe that's where you've seen it?

For what it's worth, this is the WordPress plugin that I use on our sites to make this media replacement easier: http://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-media-replace/

It lets you upload a new image with the same filename, upload and change the filename in the database, and regenerate thumbnails.

Just completing the circle here. Our UI intern found where the design actually does support replacing an image! I went ahead and documented it, and we probably will implement other things first, but it will be handy for certain use cases.
