26 December 2004 - The Saddest Day for the World.

A quake registering 9.0 on the Richter scale struck 250 kilometres
south-east of Sumatra on Sunday 26 December 2004.

It resulted in large tsunami's that have devastated coastal India, the
Maldives, Sri Lanka, Phuket, parts of Somalia and many other places
around the Indian Ocean.

We should all take this sad opportunity to remind ourselves as to how
insignificant we all are in this universe and how important the task of
the OEP in maintaining knowledge in such a tenuous existence is so
critical in the decades to come.

At least 23,000 souls have been lost to us today and we must all be
saddened and grieve for those who have lost children, fathers, mothers
and loved ones.

Millions have lost their homes, businesses and are likely to suffer for
many years to come.

I wish to express the sympathy of myself, my family and all well
meaning Australians to those in pain and suffering today.

I hope that no editors of the ODP or OEP have been directly injured or
harmed by this disaster. If I or my family can assist any editor in
need please let us know.

We forget Mother Nature and her cruel reminders of our limited place in
this universe at our peril.
May all find peace in the nights to come.
