For years I have used my ODSP dental card to get a cleaning covered
once every 9 months.

Now, after over 9 months since my last cleaning, my dentist has
cancelled my appointment for a cleaning because Accerta (the company
the government contracts these duties out to) won't pay for it, and
are telling me I have to wait a full year in-between cleanings this
time.

I called my local ODSP office and one lady there tried very hard to
help me, but she could not give me a straight answer about how often I
am entitled to receive a dental cleaning.

Other workers were even less helpful, giving me the answer, "call your
dentist, they know" or "the denist can ask the insurance company."

Instead of those answers which are of no use to me (because I do not
know what my rights, are and those answers do not tell me), I need a
concrete, tangible answer about exactly how often the ODSP regulations
state that I am entitled to have a dental cleaning covered with my
ODSP dental card.

I would greatly appreciate anyone who can provide an answer to this
question.

That is news to me. I get my teeth cleaned twice a year, every 6
months. It used to 9 months, but I think because I have diabetes, it
is every 6 months.

My cousin in Toronto told me she gets her teeth cleaned 4 times a year
and she is on ODSP. She even got her hair cut someplace in Toronto and
it cost her $8. She always look gorgeous. I told her that is a steal
because in London, the cheapest haircut is around $13 plus tax.

Hi Lorene,
She probably went to a hairdressing school, that's what I do. I go to the one in the Dufferin Mall and pay about 7 or 8 dollars for a wash and a man's cut.

odsp just provides dental insurance. They don't have any power to
regulate the insurance companies policies.

That makes no sense to me. How can Accerta not be accountable to the
government which authorizes them to provide service via the ODSP
dental card?

And how do I know what my rights are in the event that Accerta is not
providing me with the funding for services that I am legally entitled
to receive?

If someone could post the exact regulations of how often the ODSP
dental card entitles me to receive funding for cleanings, that would
be very appreciated.

No, she didn't go to a hairdressing school for that. It was some shop
someplace nearby where she lives in Toronto where she has been going
there for a while. She said it was run by Chinese people but she also
said they are very nice people. She said there was a men's hair shop
right by it.

We have a hairdressing school here in London. But I don't have the
patience to sit a long time and they are so slow doing your hair. I
know they are students learning how to cut hair right, etc. But I just
couldn't hack it anymore.

Hi

ODSP covers 4 units of scaling (cleaning) per year.

1 unit of scaling is about 15 minutes of time.

A polish is covered every 9 months.

So if you go to the dentist after a long time and it takes him/her 1
hour to clean your teeth, your cleaning is done for that year, unless
you are willing to pay for additional cleaning out of your own pocket.

In my office, for patients who come regularly I usually see them twice
a year.

We can sometimes request additional cleaning if patients have certain
medical conditions.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Zaki

I have a cleaning covered every 3 months. I take Dilantin.

Takes about 1/2 hour to 40min. or so per visit.

I believe I saw one bill for a visit at $161 and was covered under
ODSP, when I give them my Dental card.

I just have to sign this long form with 3 locations to sign my John
Henry after every cleaning and whatever they do.....
