I have been accepted to college as a mature student. Obviously I have to apply for osap. What happens to ODSP?

Firstly Congratulations!
What College and what program?
(I work part time at Confederation College)

Your best resource to answer your questions is the Financial Aid department at your college.

OSAP will not cover your living expenses, ODSP should still give you your monthly amount.
You may also be eligible for grants which do not need to be repaid.

Actually, OSAP will pay for living expenses and ODSP will gladly let them do so. YOU DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN.

Remember that OSAP is predominantly a loan program and you must repay it. If you accept money for living expenses from OSAP, ODSP will deduct that amount from your monthly payment. Simply put, you would be giving your OSAP money to ODSP and you will have to repay it to OSAP!

When seeking aid from OSAP you must be very careful to DECLINE any support that goes towards food, shelter and other items not directly related to the education. See Dir 5.11:

Thank you for this answer. My caseworker has been unreachable since I was accepted and I am not able to get to a fi ancial aid office until next week. But this information makes alot of sense and gives me something to go on at my upcoming meetings with ODSP and OSAP.

I will be taking Social Work at Georgian College. Very exciting, and very confusing with the whole ODSP vs OSAP thing.

Please do let me know as I'm curious to go back to school myself for the very same program. Good luck! Interested in knowing what to do?

No, I am pretty sure that you do not need ODSP permission before applying for OSAP.

No, I currently receive ODSP. I think I have decided to remain on ODSP while I attend college but apply for all education related expenses to be covered by osap.

Hello.. I contacted my ODSP caseworker. She said I do not need ODSP permission to apply and she advised when applying for OSAP only accept for educational fees and to make sure I decline fees that pay living expenses.

Very happy I can finish my degree in Supply Chain. I only was accepted to ODSP and want off of it ..Most of important I want my life back college and therapy for PTSD will get me there .

You don't need approval all to do anything of the sort. It is considered a way of getting out of the system. Anything that may get you into the labour market is highly encouraged by odsp. I was even able to get the OCAS application fee reimbursed by odsp.

Hi Kristen...

Did they give you any push back about paying for the OCAS fee? Sorry for all the questions

Sorry, I spoke to soon. My caseworker suggested a while back that I could submit my payment reciept. I was under the impression that a portion if not all would be covered. But I am still waiting to hear anything from my caseworker about it. I filled in an employment support request form as insgructed. Guess I will have to wait and see.
I will keep you updated as I hear.

Good day all - I'm in my second year of the community worker program at George Brown College - - I'm quite familiar with what can and can't be done in terms of financing your education - I receive ODSP and when I decided to go back to school I was told (and it was correct information) that I need to apply for OSAP for my tuition and books and will still receive my monthly financial supports.  It's important that you do not apply for any unrelated educational costs (which is section three of the breakdown you get from OSAP detailing how much money you get and the breakdown - it's pretty simple OSAP only provides tuition and books - - I somehow applied for unrelated educational costs and after I submit that form to my worker (which you HAVE to do and it says in bold print "if you are receiving ODSP that a copy of the breakdown needs to be submitted to the worker" I was informed by ODSP that I was now in a repayment situation of 700.00 - I'm not sure how I made that error but it didn't happen when I applied for my second year.  You don't need to get ODSP approval, but you do need to provide documentation every year that you're in school.  It is great for me as I qualified for three bursaries (money you don't have to pay back) and it pretty much covers my loan for the year - 2000.00 for being a student with a disability, 1900.00 for low income, and another 1000.00 for something else but can't remember off the top of my head.  There are lots of supports for ODSP recipients and going back to school.  Also, while you're a student all the money you make through work exempts you from the 200.00 restriction

I hope this helps!
