I am in need of getting my eyes tested and will need reading glasses.
To my understanding, this is covered by ODSP, correct?

How do I go about getting this done? Do I make a call to any local eye
doctor and let them know I am on ODSP?

Hi
My Dr makes puts in a request to see eye DR.
You take your drug card and the Dr submits the
prescription to ODSP then you have to wait for approval.
I think you can get it done once a year but don't quote me on that.

Peace and Love

Do they cover anti glare coating if the optometrist checks the option? All other insurances cover it.:/

Colline, why would you need to take your drug card? My eye doctor
never ever asks for my drug card for over 12 years. And yes, she knows
I am on ODSP and she is very knowledge with ODSP rule's and
regulations. I just take my prescription to ODSP's office and wait for
few days til I get the voucher forms sent to me in the mail.

As far as I know, the ODSP would not cover the anti glare coating on
my glasses. I went without it. The cost is something like over hundred
dollars plus. I couldn't afford that. Instead the place where I get my
glasses darkens the tint on my lenses, to a greyish color. I used to
get headaches from overhead lights and on my computer in the past.

Actually, it does not have to be once a year to change lenses. You can
get your lenses change if your eyesight gets worse. I had my
eyeglasses lenses changed 3 times couple years ago. You only get new
frames once every 3 years. I had no problem having ODSP sending me the
voucher forms for my prescription lenses changes and reuse my old
frames. Right now I have two pairs. I use one for indoors when I watch
TV and on the computer and one for outside for long distances. I can't
use glasses to read newspapers or books.

Get a prescription from the eye doctor and send a photocopy of the
script in to ODSP by mail, fax or drop off at the ODSP office. Make
sure keep the original script as you will need that when you buy new
eyeglasses.

And you do not need to call any eye doctor to let them know you are on
ODSP.

Thank you---I did ask my doctor but she said I just call a place--that
they don't refer. I have never had glasses, so I guess I am ok.
With regards to my drug card, I usually give it to my pharmacy for
prescriptions--can I make a copy?

"And you do not need to call any eye doctor to let them know you are on

That's true, but ODSP only covers upt to a (very) minimal amount. If you go to an optimitrist that's more than low end, you have to pay the difference, and that can be a significant amount when it comes to eyewear. So shop around and definitely let them know you're on ODSP. It saved me a lot of problems a couple of years ago I've had friends run into. There are places that cater to those on ODSP/OW and the like.

Keep in mind that we are talking about TWO separate items - the eye
exam and the glasses.

The eye exam is covered by OHIP (you are given the same coverage as a
senior) - one exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist for lens
requirements every two years (medical eye exams by an ophthalmologist
any time needed). Here you need the drug card so you are not billed
for the exam.

Once you have the lens prescription, you present it to ODSP and they
will give you a purchase form that you present to the vendor from whom
you choose to buy. The purchase form is quite limited as to the
amounts that will be paid and is good for only thirty days, so SHOP
AROUND FIRST to see who will give you the best deal BEFORE getting
that purchase form. The vendor will bill ODSP directly. If your
selection exceeds the ODSP limits, you pay the difference to the
vendor. Note that new frames can only be acquired every THREE years
(children excepted) while new lenses can be acquired whenever there is
a significant change in lens characteristics or after three years.

If a supplier (pharmacy, dentist, optometrist/ophthalmologist) wants a
copy of your documents, THEY CAN MAKE ONE. You should never give them
away - you never know when you might need them.

This is indeed true.  Though I was given a voucher from ODSP when I needed prescription glasses, I still had to fork over $90 of my own money--which I didn't get back.  In typical fashion when I explained this to my worker, she merely shrugged her shoulders.  I just cut my losses and moved on...

Thank you very much--so I make an appointment for my eyes to be
tested, and from there, they will give me a prescription for glasses
and that's when I contact ODSP? My case worker isn't the fastest at
getting back to me--does anyone know what amount they cover for
glasses? I figure they cover the most basic frames, which I'm fine
with as I don't need anything fancy. My pharmacy always keeps my drug
card, so this time, I will have them make a copy.

I got a pair of reading glasses that had the reading part with the
etched out type. They weren't the invisible ones and yet I never
paided anything.

They need the drug card to verify you are on ODSP as it's ODSP that pays for your eye exams, unless you have a condition such as diabetes, glaucoma etc., in which case OHIP will pay for it.

Hi Lorene
I'm a Diabetic so I have to have my eyes checked every year.
But the office requests my drug card, and at this point my Dr.\
tells me I can buy dollar store for now.

I do live in a rural area not anywhere near the nearest ODSP
office which is about 45 minutes away but the Drs office
would fax prescription.

Or tell  your optemetrist's receptionist where the drug card is and they can have a copy faxed to them.

If you're in Hamilton, try Optical Clearance Outlet - 350 Ottawa North. If you phone them, they might point you to a similar store in your area. Really nice people, and I've been dealing with them for years.

Colline, so am I - a diabetic, too. I go twice a year for my eye check
up at my eye doctor's office. OHIP pays for my visits. They have never
asked for my drug card all these years, even when I am on ODSP for
over 11 years. I also go to the eye specialist at the hospital every
so often few times per year. OHIP pays for the visits. I have open
angle glaucoma. I had a very high pressure on my right eye. I am on
two expensive eye drops that I take very day probably for the rest of
my life. I had some good news from my eye doctor and from my eye
specialist this week. Both have said the pressure on my eye is
decreasing, which means the eye drops are working. I still have to
take eye drops regardless.

My mom shares the same eye doctor as I do and she has been going to
her for almost 20 years all the time she was on GAINS-D and then ODSP.
I asked her if the eye doctor's office asked for her drug card. She
said no, not to her knowledge did they ever ask her.

I should add - glaucoma was discovered in my eyes about couple years
ago. So before that, my eyes were okay.
