It starts tomorrow here in London, thanks to our Ontario Health
Minister Deb Matthews. Shopper's Drug Mart are having a big fight
against with Deb Matthews and it starts here in London because Deb
Matthews is from here. Shoppers Drug Mart will reduce hours in 7 of
our stores in London and jack up the dispensing fees and charge
delivery fees for anyone who need prescriptions. I may have to pull
all my prescriptions to another pharmacy. I certainly will not be able
to pay $5 for each of my 5 prescriptions. Thank god it is every 3
months I get a refill, but still it is a lot more money than $2.
I think the rest of other drug stores, such as Pharma Plus,
independent stores, etc will probably follow suit. I imagine Wal-mart,
Zellers and No Frills will charge fees next, too.
We will see a lot of sick people who wouldn't be able to afford paying
dispensing fees and end up in hospitals. That is a bigger expense that
the Fiberal government are not thinking straight ahead.

However when I got the newspaper today, it said it starts April 19th,
not today, as it said on the news last night. They said London will be
the first to try out and then the other cities and towns will follow.
Those who need drugs to be delivered to your home will be charged fees
shortly. They (both Shoppers and the Fiberal government) are holding
us hostage.

My doctor tried to help me out with dispensing fees once by writing a
script for a 3month supply, and the cheapo's at Loblaws refused to
dispense a three month supply.
They said my odsp card was only good for one month, and I'd have to
come back with my new card next month, and of course they'd charge the
province again, and again.

Mind you, the old duffers have to fork over something higher than the $2 if
they have a higher income if I'm not mistaken.

Dispensing fees mean squat since they ARE covered under ODB for eligible
prescriptions.
MOST of the Shopper's in my city have pretty good hours, either open until
midnight or are 24 hours.
Regardless, it's because they DO charge the co-payment that I don't get my
medications filled there.
Wal-Mart may not be a "full service" drug store like Shopper's but they
don't ding me the co-payment.
Zehr's didn't but I feel they were discriminatory based on my disability (at
times I feel weak and use the mobility scooter they supply. The cashier
(only one on as it was near closing time) ignored me totally.
I realized it was time I moved all my medications to another pharmacy and
find a new supermarket.
I may have to pull

So... $25 instead of $10. That's as good a reason as any to find somewhere
else. But as I indicated, check around. There ARE still some pharmacies
that waive the co-payment altogether for ODSP recipients.

Shopper's seems to have a large customer base and probably don't have as
much to lose as the other pharmacies you mention. So I can' t see it
happening any time soon.
Still, I'm not the decision maker so hopefully I didn't just stick my foot
in my mouth (ew).

I predict that there will always be someplace that realizes they can make
more money picking up the tab for a co-payment than they will if the person
decides to go elsewhere.

Checking them out. Thanks for the references.

i use a local "mom and pop" pharmacy and they don't charge the $2. my
mom, 82 this year, is charged the regular dispensing fee at the
pharmacy she goes to. i've tried to explain to her that some
pharmacies don't charge and she could shop around, but at her age, she
has every right to be set in her ways. the only thing i can say, is
if you pay dispensing fees, keep the receipt for income tax purposes -
medical expenses. even though they won't make a ding in your medical
expenses at all, claim them regardless for when the time comes you
actually have enough medical to make a difference.
Oh, I actually logged into this thread cause I wanted to reminisce and
blabblermouth about that Shoppers Drug Mart that started this fall of
the pharmacidal dominion of Ontario. I think it was about 15-20 years
ago. first alittle background info: this region where I live is a
commercial target zone for test marking...we got the first drive
through Beer Store. ... so way back when ATM's were being tested that
Shoppers was the location of the first ATM. It was accessible from the
parking lot, installed into the brick wall. One night somebody
deperate stole the ATM machine. They backed up to it with a pick-up
truck, chained the machine to the hitch and pulled it right out of the
wall. ... that test failed.
It's kinda cool living in London where we can watch the world getting
ready for what's coming next, to a theatre near you.
Holigrams are coming!!!
remember Speakers Corner?
It is the closest drug store from where we live and we like our
pharmacist there. He is very nice and very helpful, too. I will not go
Wal-marts because of the long wait to do prescriptions take so long.
If I go first thing in the morning as soon as the Wal-mart doors open,
I have wait anywhere from 1/2 to as long as 2 1/2 hours. At Shopper's,
it takes about 10 minutes and that is fast enough to make me happy to
wait on them.
However I read in the newspaper today (Apr 14), that the Pharma Plus
are going with Shopper's Drug Mart in their fight against Deb
Matthews. There is talk that they may charge dispensing fees later on
if they can't get the Liberal Government to change their minds.
There were letters in the Editor's column that someone wanted to us to
boycott Shopper's. Some are saying they will not shop there.

LOL! Are you in the right group?
Income tax purposes. What a joke.
FYI that is a NON-REFUNDABLE credit so unless you're raking in some extra
income on the side, it zeroes itself out if you're on ODSP
since that's only applied to income tax PAYABLE.

I learned about this during my years with Zehr's. The pharmacy actually
closes an hour or so before the rest of the store.
Yesterday I said farewell to the sexy brunette, Magdalena, that I was so
fond of. But after how the store treated me I won't shop there again and
found no reason to
keep getting my medicine there. Even before meeting her I liked the name
and chose it as a possibility for a baby name. But the name "Zophie" won
out.
I find that even if Wal-Mart is open 24/7 the pharmacy isn't. And I suppose
that may even be the same for Shopper's Drug Mart (we have a 24/7 store in
town) but
since they charge the co-payment I don't deal with them.
