I am in shock that I may have to pay $5 for each prescription instead
of the normal $2 fee. It was on the London News tonight.

It starts tomorrow here in London, thanks to our Ontario Health
Minister Deb Matthews. Shopper's Drug Mart are having a big fight
against with Deb Matthews and it starts here in London because Deb
Matthews is from here. Shoppers Drug Mart will reduce hours in 7 of
our stores in London and jack up the dispensing fees and charge
delivery fees for anyone who need prescriptions. I may have to pull
all my prescriptions to another pharmacy. I certainly will not be able
to pay $5 for each of my 5 prescriptions. Thank god it is every 3
months I get a refill, but still it is a lot more money than $2.

I think the rest of other drug stores, such as Pharma Plus,
independent stores, etc will probably follow suit. I imagine Wal-mart,
Zellers and No Frills will charge fees next, too.

We will see a lot of sick people who wouldn't be able to afford paying
dispensing fees and end up in hospitals. That is a bigger expense that
the Fiberal government are not thinking straight ahead.

I heard about that on the news. It is coming to every city. They hit
us everywhere, eah? Absolutely everywhere. But Shopper's tends to
gouge.

I suggest you check out this pharmacy, I deal with the one in Mount Brydges,
for years, free delivery, they are filled within the hour, $2 per script, I
have nothing but great things to say, I am sure the one in London probably
works the same way.

Check it out

Check around at different pharmacy's. The one I use in Toronto doesn't charge anything for my scripts. It's at Dundas and Bathurst a couple of blocks from Toronto Western Hospital. It's called "Hilary's". As I think Guardian Drugs doesn't change a fee either.

Bill, that is no good to shop at CDS pharmacy. It is too far out there
and we have the poorest bus service for those who live out Northwest
London. I live in the Central area nearby downtown. I don't have a
car. I do know there is an independent drug store on Dundas called
Chapman's about 6 or 8 or maybe 10 blocks east from where I live. I do
happened to know they don't charge any fees there. So maybe I go
there.

However when I got the newspaper today, it said it starts April 19th,
not today, as it said on the news last night. They said London will be
the first to try out and then the other cities and towns will follow.
Those who need drugs to be delivered to your home will be charged fees
shortly. They (both Shoppers and the Fiberal government) are holding
us hostage.

Shopper drug mart recently cutback benefits for their delivery drivers
too, and their staff used to get a discount, but now that's discount
is just on Life brand of products and they can't have both the
discount and the optimum points.

This first Shoppers Drug Mart to raise dispensing fees, charge for
delivery, and cut-back it's hours is right across the street from the
Attorney General Chris Bentley's constituency office. Former
Provincial Premier David Peterson is on the board of directors for
Shoppers Drug Mart and is also the brother-in-law of the Minister of
Health, Deb Matthews.
There's somebody that works in that particular shoppers drug mart that
has been vocally prejudiced against welfare recipients. Maybe this is
the only way to slash her hours.

My doctor tried to help me out with dispensing fees once by writing a
script for a 3month supply, and the cheapo's at Loblaws refused to
dispense a three month supply.
They said my odsp card was only good for one month, and I'd have to
come back with my new card next month, and of course they'd charge the
province again, and again.

Mind you, the old duffers have to fork over something higher than the $2 if
they have a higher income if I'm not mistaken.

Dispensing fees mean squat since they ARE covered under ODB for eligible
prescriptions.
MOST of the Shopper's in my city have pretty good hours, either open until
midnight or are 24 hours.
Regardless, it's because they DO charge the co-payment that I don't get my
medications filled there.
Wal-Mart may not be a "full service" drug store like Shopper's but they
don't ding me the co-payment.
Zehr's didn't but I feel they were discriminatory based on my disability (at
times I feel weak and use the mobility scooter they supply. The cashier
(only one on as it was near closing time) ignored me totally.
I realized it was time I moved all my medications to another pharmacy and
find a new supermarket.

I may have to pull

So... $25 instead of $10. That's as good a reason as any to find somewhere
else. But as I indicated, check around. There ARE still some pharmacies
that waive the co-payment altogether for ODSP recipients.

Shopper's seems to have a large customer base and probably don't have as
much to lose as the other pharmacies you mention. So I can' t see it
happening any time soon.
Still, I'm not the decision maker so hopefully I didn't just stick my foot
in my mouth (ew).

I predict that there will always be someplace that realizes they can make
more money picking up the tab for a co-payment than they will if the person
decides to go elsewhere.

I use Wal-Mart where I am and I get excellent service from these folks;
the head pharmacist is very good, he checked something when I came with
a new prescription, then he called the doctor that gave it to me and had it
changed, because it didn't mix well w/some of the other drugs I am taking.
I am going to talk to them about my diabetes monitor.  They actually give
workshops and patient counseling services on specific topics.

And they have NEVER charged me the $2.00 fee.

i use a local "mom and pop" pharmacy and they don't charge the $2. my
mom, 82 this year, is charged the regular dispensing fee at the
pharmacy she goes to. i've tried to explain to her that some
pharmacies don't charge and she could shop around, but at her age, she
has every right to be set in her ways. the only thing i can say, is
if you pay dispensing fees, keep the receipt for income tax purposes -
medical expenses. even though they won't make a ding in your medical
expenses at all, claim them regardless for when the time comes you
actually have enough medical to make a difference.

Lorene, if you're looking for an independant pharmacy in London,
there's one in the lobby of University Hospital to the left of the
elevators, beside the chapel. It's probably where most the drugs get
dispensed from anyway. 24/7 drug stores aren't allowed to sell
perscription medicine unless there's physically present at the time of
dispensing a pharmacist. Some of these drug stores don't have a
pharmacists, they've got drivers that will go to the hopsital
pharmacist to get the stuff...they're just middlemen. There's a simple
solution. Get your perscriptions in the daytime, and don't get
discharged from the hospital without first having a three day supply,
so you can get your bedrest and recuperate...Lord knows you sure don't
get any rest in the hospital. I actually had a male intern come into
my private room to do a bedcheck, in the middle of the night, and
shine a flashlight directly on my face. scared the flipping daylights
outta me, he's lucky he didn't get clobbered with a lamp.

Oh, I actually logged into this thread cause I wanted to reminisce and
blabblermouth about that Shoppers Drug Mart that started this fall of
the pharmacidal dominion of Ontario. I think it was about 15-20 years
ago. first alittle background info: this region where I live is a
commercial target zone for test marking...we got the first drive
through Beer Store. ... so way back when ATM's were being tested that
Shoppers was the location of the first ATM. It was accessible from the
parking lot, installed into the brick wall. One night somebody
deperate stole the ATM machine. They backed up to it with a pick-up
truck, chained the machine to the hitch and pulled it right out of the
wall. ... that test failed.
It's kinda cool living in London where we can watch the world getting
ready for what's coming next, to a theatre near you.
Holigrams are coming!!!
remember Speakers Corner?

My mom called our local Shoppers to ask questions about the delivery
fees and dispensing fees couple days ago. They said they will charge
$5 for prescription deliveries and $10 for other stuff, like creams,
toilet paper, etc starting April 19th. Nothing was mentioned about
dispensing fees yet. Some stores have reduced their hours and some
pharmacists are not going to be on staff if you need a prescription
and wait few minutes while they are making it up for you.

It is the closest drug store from where we live and we like our
pharmacist there. He is very nice and very helpful, too. I will not go
Wal-marts because of the long wait to do prescriptions take so long.
If I go first thing in the morning as soon as the Wal-mart doors open,
I have wait anywhere from 1/2 to as long as 2 1/2 hours. At Shopper's,
it takes about 10 minutes and that is fast enough to make me happy to
wait on them.

However I read in the newspaper today (Apr 14), that the Pharma Plus
are going with Shopper's Drug Mart in their fight against Deb
Matthews. There is talk that they may charge dispensing fees later on
if they can't get the Liberal Government to change their minds.

There were letters in the Editor's column that someone wanted to us to
boycott Shopper's. Some are saying they will not shop there.

LOL! Are you in the right group?
Income tax purposes. What a joke.
FYI that is a NON-REFUNDABLE credit so unless you're raking in some extra
income on the side, it zeroes itself out if you're on ODSP
since that's only applied to income tax PAYABLE.

I learned about this during my years with Zehr's. The pharmacy actually
closes an hour or so before the rest of the store.
Yesterday I said farewell to the sexy brunette, Magdalena, that I was so
fond of. But after how the store treated me I won't shop there again and
found no reason to
keep getting my medicine there. Even before meeting her I liked the name
and chose it as a possibility for a baby name. But the name "Zophie" won
out.
I find that even if Wal-Mart is open 24/7 the pharmacy isn't. And I suppose
that may even be the same for Shopper's Drug Mart (we have a 24/7 store in
town) but
since they charge the co-payment I don't deal with them.

I asked a rev.can. 1-800 agent about these credits, cause I had to pay
for my dentures even though it seemed that everyone else, including OW
recipients were covered. The agent told me to claim them as a medical
expense in such and such a line, and make sure I keep the receipts
incase someday they do an audit, but the credits appartently increase
my CPP points and *may* improve my old age pension eligibility.

there must be some reason rev.can. keeps track on non-refundable tax
credits, it's even written into the tax guidlines, there's lots of non-
refundable credits...so I wondered, what's the point of even telling
them you spent money on something specific if there's no refund?
Basically a credit owing is a debt due.

Last Friday, I picked up my prescription refill. On Sunday, I got the
2 big bottles of pills- 360 pills for 3 month supply. I looked at it
carefully and thinking something is not quite right. Something told me
to count the pills. I was short of 40 pills. I called the drug store
this morning (Monday). Alex the pharmacist said he can't understand
how that happened, but he took my word and gave me 40 pills at no
charge. I take those 4 pills per day - 2 at a.m. and 2 at p.m. so 40
pills is 10 days. What would have happened I didn't count them and
when at the end of 3 months I go to the drug store for a refill.
Chances are very great they will not give me any not unless it is 5
days, (not 10 days) before you finished the pills. Those pills are not
the popular kind to sell on the streets, anyways and no one was in my
apt on the weekend.

At Shopper's this morning, there was a sign up saying $5 for delivery
medications ans $10 for any items you wanted from Shopper's to be
delivered to your home.

wow. SDM is pretty apalling after reading this thread. I'm not
paying $5 anywhere. I'll have to make some calls and pick a new
pharmacy. 2.5x the cost is a slap in the face. I don't mind paying a
small fee for delivery, but not delivery + dispensing fee + script
cost to ODSP.

I only go to Shoppers for scripts (in the past) and to get super
bargains on 2 or 3 food items while I'm in the plaza. Maybe if they
held any value in humanity they would charge less than twice the price
for all of their products and attract some more customers. I hope
this grab for cash is dramatic enough that everyone unifies against
them and they get punished for it.

It is only $5 for any number of prescriptions delivered. For e.g. if
you have 2 or 4 prescriptions to be delivered to your home, they only
just charge $5, not $5 per prescription on top of dispensing fees
which is still $2. I am going to pick up my prescriptions and also my
mother's to save on the delivery fees at Shopper's, ore else we will

I have counted pills (in a veterinary hospital) and the plastic
counters are very accurate. I can see being 1 or 2 pills out but not
40.

I have to watch my local Shoppers. Twice they overcharged, once
charged an extra item. Another time I went to have a prescription
filled for 'Uremol' (for itchy skin, my allergies are sometimes quite
bad) and he said it wasn't covered. I told him that it has always
been, so he went to look, finally came back and said he found it. I
pointed to a bottle on the shelf and said 'that is it there'. He gave
me a small tube of cream, 50 ml, whereas the bottle 150 ml was lotion.
Think I got ripped off there. But he was going to charge me for it
until I objected.

Uremol is a prescription??? Is it covered under the ODB? I was never

get at Wal-marts because it is much cheaper than it is at Shoppers.

I always had the ' Uremol Urea HC' lotion, 150 mL bottle. I looked
over the script and the doctor wrote 50 (can't remember if he put
grams or mL after). So that is why I got the small tube. I prefer a
lotion myself. Now it could be the lotion was covered and the cream
was not; when I told him I had never paid for it he then found it (I
was assuming at that point I'd be getting the same as before). was
covered, and came back with the tube of cream. But one of them is
covered, if the doctor prescribes it. Perhaps call the pharmacy and
ask 'is the 150mL lotion covered'? If it is have the doctor write
150mL on the prescription. If it is the cream for 50g that is covered,
have the dr. write 50 gr.

Good luck
