Darin, It depends how long have you finished the last school date. The
loans have to be at least 7 years old, not under, to be qualified for
bankruptcy.

My OSAP loans was at least 10 years, well almost. At the time I had
to wait til at least 10 years when they changed the law to down to 7
years old in 2008 few months before I start processing for bankruptcy.
It was at the point that Revenue Canada stepped in and stop the tax
credits that I had to file for bankruptcy. I am officially declared
debt free or discharge as of June 2009. I am just so happy no more
harrassing phone calls and no more threatening mail from all kinds of
collection agencies. I am stress free and happier nowadays today.

Darin--don't file for bankrupcy---do a consumer proposal--your credit
rating will be the same as bankruptcy, and you will have to make
payments, but they are WAY lower than what you would have to pay now.
My debt had amassed to a huge amount and they reduced it by a quarter.
My minimum payments were less than what you have to pay. Do some
searches online for Consumer Proposals--you also get to keep your tax
returns and gov't checks. If you file for bankruptcy, you don't.

Lastly---sad but true, if you default on payments, if you have no
assets, they can't really do anything. This was told to a friend of
mine who went through a similar situation. They said 'you can't get
money out of a stone" (her family was able to help her out in her
case)

Melanie, I also think you could just call it greed and worry about the consequences later, even with many people on ODSP. They get a credit card and they go wild and max it out and then they are screwed. I have neighbours that  try to bum smokes and borrow? money at the end of every month because they know I have it (I budget well and my credit cards are paid in full every month I use one). I always say no to loaning money and for smokes I just tell them fifty cents a smoke and $12.00 a pack, but it's the same every month and the same people. It may seem cruel but I am not set up to be a bank or to support someone else. I even get offers for credit cards on my cell phone.

LOL, pretty soon we'll all know someone who has used them because Canadians are up to their eyeballs in debt.  I'm not even kidding, the average household debt as reported by some big financial watchdog this past week was $23,000.00.  This is non-mortgage debt.  We have a serious problem here folks.  The problems are - too little income and our culture and how it wants so much now (you want it, you buy it now and pay later).  They said this is the highest debt has ever been in Canada.

It's going to be a good year or decade for these consolidation agencies.  Business will come pouring in.

I get a credit card offer or personal loan offer at least once a month.  I do believe your banks share information on a central database to credit card/loan companies.  They have to.  The more debt you have, the more they want your business.  They want you buried.

I have a friend on OW and when they maxed out the 3 = $1500.00 credit cards, one company increase the limit to $3000.00.

Like many, this kind of thing is going to come back and bite some rear ends.

The only people you should consult are CREDIT COUNCILORS, not DEBT
ELIMINATION companies.

DEBT ELIMINATION companies are in the business to make money and take
a portion to pay for their services. That money you pay for them to
resolve your debt could better be used to actually pay your debt.

Using DEBT ELIMINATION companies you are not off the hook it these
companies fail to pay your debts.

I watch U.S. Suzy Orman and she mentioned that the way to go is
CREDIT COUNCILORS. They are not in it for the money, they are like coaches.

Whatch who you use to get rid of your debt!
