Does anyone know if ODSP covers a gym membership or at least part of
one? I had a Goodlife Membership for a year but had to cancel because
it was over $60 a month. I heard the YMCA does subsidized gym
memberships but a few people told me it would still be roughly $30 a
month. Anything cheaper in Toronto? Thanks in advance for any comments
and advice.

If a gym membership was deemed a medical necessity, Ontario Works
would be the place to apply as it is that office that handles
discretionary spending. Don't get your hopes up though. My local gym
gives an ODSP recipient free membership as barter for doing some work
around the gym. For example, when opening hours changed from 6:30am
to 5am to better serve the members, the owner didn't want to get up
that early. In return for being at the gym at 4:30am to get things
ready for clients, clearing snow if necessary, etc, the ODSP
recipient was given full access to the gym. Since he was able to do
his morning routines once the doors were open, it was a win-win.

Nope not that I know of!! I had a doctor's note AND a specialist's
note (both on prescription pads!) stating it was NECESSARY for my
health (stroke recover) that I join a health club of some kind.
Without any questions whatsoever, I was totally turned down flat -
several times!

I did end up joining the YMCA, but had to cancel after less than a
year as I couldn't afford the $32 a month after it went up from $28.

As far as I know, ODSP does not give an allowance for a gym
membership. I have a subsidized membership at the YMCA and I pay
$16.80 a month for myself and my daughter. I get to use the exercise
equipment and the pool, take part in many classes that are included in
the membership, and do things with my daughter, as well. She's
starting swimming lessons in a few weeks, and that was at no
additional cost. I'm on ODSP as a single person with one dependent,
living in rent-geared-to-income housing.

How did you get a membership so cheap?
Even with the "subsidy" they were asking 32.00
a month, which translates into a weeks groceries for me...

Corinna, if I remembered correctly, the YMCA did ask me how much can I
afford to pay for YMCA. I said $10 per month. They accept that and the
subsidy paid the rest for me. That was over 10 years ago. I forget how
much YMCA membership fees were at the time. My daughter in law joined
Good Life Fitness in London at the City Plaza and she was paying $20
per month and this was just last year when she signed up.

That's why I had to cancel mine Corrinna....it was raised to $32.00
from $28.00 and I was told at the time, that was as low as they could
offer me.

I don't know, I just brought in the paperwork they asked for and
that's what they quoted me. I'd suggest asking them if that's the
lowest they can offer you, and tell them that is a week's worth of
groceries (if you're comfortable with telling them that). I wonder if
it, perhaps, depends on where you live? I don't know why it would, but
maybe it does.

I had a membership at the YMCA. $10.23 every two weeks...

they shut the pool down from end of June until the beginning of September for repairs...

so I cancelled my membership until the Fall....
