Hi,

I am on odsp and staying with my wife in a bachelor apartment with no
kids in Toronto area. Due to insomnia and related medical problems -
I need at least 1 bedroom apartment and also needs replacement of
furniture etc.

What is the procedure to approach Ministry of Community (ODSP) to get
approval of 1 bed room apartment and how to get grant for furniture?

I look forward to hear from the group

Hi John
When you and your wife find an apt you like you have to get a recipt from
the
management or owner and go to ODSP and then ask for first and last months,
not sure though if they give both,
if this is what you need and also ask for start up money.Which is money
for your moving and things that you need.
There is a one bedroom in a fairly nice building on George St.
at George just south of Front St. Toronto. It says 1 Bedroom for rent and i
think they want $700 and something. This is a market rent one.
They have subsities in this building also.
It is called Marketview Co-op.
There is also a 2 bedroom advertized in the window.

Hi John:

I went and looked in the ODSP directives and see that the maximum amount you can get for 2 people for shelter is $672.  If you pay more than this, it will have to come from the Basic Needs portion.
If you pay less than this (a miracle), then you can also get monthly money for utilities up to the maximum amount.

·        Where utilities, heat, water, sewage, and insurance are not included in the rent/mortgage, the actual cost of these items for members of the benefit unit must be verified and can be included in the shelter allowance subject to the maximums.

You can go here to read about the community start up costs to help with moving and a bed, whatever.  They seem to use their own discretion about whether or not to give you furniture.
If you have none, then it shouldn't be a problem.  Of if you have bed bugs where you are and you can't take the bed with you. (good reason since they are every where in Toronto).

I suggest you collect all the info that you need to know, then go into the office and be really nice.  Works wonders for me.

Hope this is helpful,
Sky

Sky,
This is a *very* discretionary benefit.  They do not give furniture
money to anybody, unless they are leaving an abusive situation
here.  I even had people apply who had *no* furniture to their
name and they were still turned down.
