Yes, but just use it for necessities of life or things related to your
disability, no luxuries or those purchases will be concidered assets.

You can have a credit card - you just can't use it.

Well, you can't use it like most people and use it to 'float a loan'.
That is, spend more money than you get monthly. (Loans are considered
income, with some specific exceptions.)

You can use it as a 'cash alternative' and pay the monthly balance
when due.

Normally, after some time of regular payment, they'll up your credit
limit. And then again. If unchecked, this can raise questions, so keep
your limit from being overly inflated.

ODSP has no idea of what you buy on your credit cards. I have used mine for luxury items ie. flat
panel monitor and have had no problems.

It has been sucessfully agrued that computers and their components are
not concidered assets.
There was a women from Toronto a few years back, on "welfare" who sent
her daughter to ballet school, using credit and she got into a great
deal of unbearable trouble.

yes you are allowed to have credit cards on ODSP . I have 3 and they
know . it is people on welfare who are not allowed to use credit
cards ,if they do, welfare considers it an income and deducts off your
cheque (this happened to my brother)

There have been a lot of different answers given here--that is because
this subject is confusing and contradictory (as most of the rules
are).

Loans are income in BOTH Ontario Works and ODSP regulations. However,
that doesn't mean you can't have a credit card. Generally, it is
considered OK to use the card to make purchases, but if you take out a
cash advance, that is a "loan" which is supposed to be reported and
deducted dollar for dollar from your ODSP.
ODSP staff will get credit reports on clients at times, and clients
are sometimes asked to bring copies of credit card bills to their
financial reviews. This will not necessarily be a problem as long as
you can generally explain what you used the card for.
Even though the rules are the same in both cases, OW just checks more
often and enforces rules like this more frequently.Actually, credit
checks are more often used for things like--seeing if you are working,
or claim to be working on a credit card application, and for seeing if
anyone cosigned for the credit card with you.

my worker told me they do not check credit cards
but ask when you have your review on the form, there is question about debt
if you owe more than 500 dollars apparently your supposed to report it
so at review time make sure your cards are below 500 if you can
but my impression was that they did not really care
I think every office seems to be different

Patti,
My experience is that if you report a debt over $500 -- and they keep
a record of this.  If you get a windfall, for example, they will let you
apply some of it to pay off these debts.

The only question I've ever received about credit cards is how much
was business use and how much was personal and they suggested
I keep one credit card (and line of credit) for the business and another
card for personal expenses.  I was told that they are more concerned
with people who have high credit card expenses that get rapidly paid
off when it does not appear to represent the person's stated income.

For example, if you keep adding up a lot of things on your credit card
and can pay it off each month, they will want to know how you are
paying it, esp. if you state you are not working.
