I was wondering if ODSP covers the cost of orthotic supports for
inside your shoes? I don't mean the generic drug store ones, but
ones made for your arch.

heeerrree we go! LOL
1. different municipalities pay for different things. in ottawa i can
get new shoes/orthotics every year
2. odsp workers will tell you different things-sometimes 'we don't pay
for that' to 'the city will cover it' to 'only once or every two or
three years' blah blah blah

Yes, they do now.  You used to actually have to go through OW, believe it or not, but if now it goes through ODSP, if I understand correctly.

Yes they do: requires a script from your GP; take to a place which
makes custom orthotics (sports medicine clinic, orthopedic clinic,
physiotherapy clinic etc.) and they forward the estimated cost to your
ODSP caseworker. I have inserts as well as a pair of walking shoes ---
similar process.

Cheers,
Val, Ottawa

I am on my feet for a good 3 to 4 hours for work and running around a day.

I find shoes alone.... I don't bother with those Walmart type shoes.

I buy those brown Kodiak type shoes sold by the name "Merrell".

If these walking shoes only last 6 months. I am responsible for the
remaining time?

Krista,
Again, it depends on where you live.  My region covers nothing of that sort.
I either pay $800 - $1200 to be fitted with what I need out of pocket, or do
without and risk a fall on any uneven pavement.  This was WITH a doctor's
prescription.  If these are covered anywhere in Ontario, they should be
covered province-wide, regardless of where the person lives.

I just recently got some through a chiropodist office.

I was told that I had just gotten in under the wire because they had
received a letter saying that orthotics would now only be covered once
every 3 years now AND prescriptions from orthopedic surgeons would be
the only ones accepted from now on. Also, though you didn't ask,
orthopedic shoes are apparently no longer being covered.

Thank you Angela. I know you live in my ODSP office jurisdiction.

Exactly the answer I needed. Argh....

There should be blanket coverage. Either something for all or
nothing for all. Not random areas.

I also asked if ODSP helps disabled people find jobs. No they
don't. They only fund job things like clothes that have to be bought
for by the employee, that are specially for that job.

I kind I go through 2.5 pairs of shoes a non-winter year. March to
November-ish.

I don't buy pairs of shoes less than $60.

I have been informed that orthotics are now covered under the
Assistive Devices Program and everybody in Ontario qualifies for
coverage.

The tricky part is to make sure that the place you GET your orthotics
is willing to bill the ADP. Many places will not, as there are limits
to coverage.

So it should not matter if you're on OW or ODSP, or where you live. It
only matters that you find a place that is willing to bill ADP
directly.

Darlene,
I know what orthotics you are referring to ... they always covered them
under ADP, but not the kind that most of us need.

My physician tried that route and that was the answer we got.
