We get our january checks early, around the 22nd. We get no check at
the end of the month
We get the transition sale tax credit- $100 for singles, $330 for
couples or families on the 10th

That is all

No, I don't think so but wishful thinking.

If you're counting the HST rebate, then two, yes. If not, no the ODSP
gods are not going to give us Christmas spending money.

2 Cheques? Unless you are talking about the OSTTB (Ontario Sales Tax
Transitional Benefit) arriving this Friday Dec. 10th by direct
deposit, maybe later by cheque in the amounts of $100.00 for singles/
$335.00 for families? And the regular ODSP cheques are paid on
Wednesday, December 22nd this year. CPP-D is also paid on Dec. 22nd.

As a side note about Christmas, the only province in Canada that
provides "extra" for Chrismas, interestingly enough, is British
Columbia, at $50.00 for their Christmas "bonus". But you wouldn't
want to move there to live on their otherwise paltry disability
assistance rates. Ontario believe it or not is the best it gets, and
even WE have to scrape by.

Does anyone know the rational about sending the cheques early in Dec. as
opposed to the regular time in Jan.

Personaly , I prefer that we maintain yearly timetable , because it's much
easier to buget the pennies.

wondering why they didn't put something on the Nov flyer in the cheque
cast, re Dec dispersion?

It's already been discussed, need we rehash it?

Just be sure to understand the cheque you receive on December 22, 2010
IS your cheque to live on for the month of January, 2011... sounds
simple but perhaps better to be clear. Happy Holidays People!

Don't blow that December 22nd cheque all at once.

I'm sure ODSP gets tons of calls. Oh I spent my December 22nd
cheque. I thought it was Christmas money. I bet you anything.

January is the #1 month for calls about the community start up/
emergency funding/rent bank/utility fund ect. I am not trying to
reopen that discussion as to why or how, just saying that is the fact
that that is the reality, most of those calls are in january, not just
for those on ODSP/OW but for pretty much all low income families,
whether on assistance in some form or not. It is more a reality of
people feeling pressured to conform to the commercialization of
christmas

Very true. People can use CSUMB (community startup & maintenance
benefit) to prevent a utility disconnect or an eviction, but you can
expect that your ODSP office will recommend or even require that your
future rent payments be made via Pay Direct to the landlord. The
problem with doing this is that you are only allowed to access this
fund once in every 24 months unless you have another very pressing
emergency situation like a fire/flood, etc.

The bottom line is, there is not enough money in the OW/ODSP budgets
for most people to pay the rent, AND pay the utilities, AND take care
of just the basic needs for themselves or their kids.

That's a fact.

The shelter rates are the biggest problem, as the amounts allocated
for max shelter very rarely cover what is needed to pay the rent on a
suitable, decent unit in the high-cost areas where most people live.

And then to have even a small amount of money to enjoy a bit of human
dignity and pleasure like other people enjoy is out of the question
unless something else gets sacrificed.

Small correction: We get $335.00 for couples/families on the 10th.

Refer to this page from the Canada Revenue Agency:

To be exact (and I like being exact lol you need to be on ODSP), you
have 5 weeks and 5 days to live on the money you receive on December
22nd because your next cheque isn't until January 31, 2011! So that's
a feat of budgeting right there. Many will hopefully get the January
5th GST payment to smooth things *a bit*.

Now if your bank pays out direct deposits on Saturday morning for any
upcoming Monday payments, like mine does, then you *may* be able to
get your hands on your money on Saturday January 29th.

Because as we all know, 5 weeks and 5 days (40 days, people) is a long
time! There is always more month than money.
