ask ODSP for form for her vitamins and get doctor to filled the form out and bring it back to ODSP and it should be covered by ODSP, it accepted.  For clothing it not covered.  You have to used your income for clothes etc..

hi there,
I just had my baby on monday, and odsp wouldnt give me any extra funds
for this, but you are entitled to $40 extra a month for milk. You have
to request the special diet form, have your doctor fill it out, then
she should get the extra $40/mnth until she gives birth, then it will
automatically stop. Hope this helps!

They do not give you extra money on your check each month to buy a crib.  But I know there is funding for a layette when the baby arrives.  I am not sure how much it is, (my children are 14 and 17) but I know it does exsist.  I am sure if you call the worker and ask, they will tell you what is avalible.

There was a pregnancy allowance, should still be.
I think it can be used from conception to birth or started later in
the pregnancy and continued after birth for breastfeeding mothers. The
drug card might still cover the maternity suppliment/vitamins
necessary to ensure a healthy baby...congrats.

Hello Sue,

I went through your same situation last year with my oldest daughter.
The only thing I was able to get added to my cheque for her was $40.00
as a special diet allowance. It is a paltry sum, when you consider
what an expectant mother is supposed to have in her diet!! Her
pregnancy vitamins were NOT covered, and once my grand-daughter was
born in December of last year, that allowance was ended. Because only
my daughter was on my cheque, I was given nothing extra after the baby
was born, and went into a lot of debt trying to get the things the
baby needed. IE, diapers, formula (my daughter is bipolar and on
medication so she was not able to breast-feed. Had she been able to
breast-feed, the $40.00 diet allowance would have continued up until
the baby was 1 year old.), clothing, car seat, etc. etc. Luckily, the
father's parents have been able to help out alot more financially than
I can.
My daughter had to apply on behalf of the baby to OW. She ended up
moving out of my home to live with her fiance, the baby's father and
they are now on OW together, but she has had an awful time trying to
get OW to add the baby to her cheque because they wanted either a
birth registration card or my grand-daughter's birth certificate. My
daughter moved out on February 1, and although the baby has a health
card, but still no birth registration nor birth certificate (which
seems unreasonable due to the fact that OW was given a photocopy of
the health card) OW will not add the baby to their cheque. The fact
that it is the GOVERNMENT that is backlogged and is taking so long to
issue both the birth registration card and the birth certificate makes
absolutely no difference in the eyes of OW. According to OW, even
though they have the health card, and the baby is covered on their OW
drug card, as far as they're concerned, my grand-daughter doesn't
*exist* as a person!!!
Every single month, OW tries to cut my daughter's family off, using
one excuse after another, even though my future son-in-law is out
looking for work every day, and sending out numerous resumes. They
follow OW's rules to the letter, yet still, they are harrassed every
month, which I find deplorable!
Once your daughter has her baby, she will IMMEDIATELY need to apply
for OW for the baby. Trust me, as soon as she is able, get her in to
the OW office with as much *proof* of the baby's birth as she can
get.
My daughter nor I didn't think to get a copy of the Proof of Live
Birth from the doctor that delivered my grand-daughter, so she and her
fiance are constantly harrassed and stressed out. Had she gotten the
Proof of Live Birth form before she left the hospital (the hospital
won't give out a copy of that form now...why?..I have NO idea!!)
perhaps things would be easier for them. As it stands now, they are
living on just over $900.00 for the 3 of them, and I often have to
squeeze money out of my own cheque to help them out, even though I
barely get enough for myself and my youngest daughter on ODSP as it
is.
There are programs that your daughter can go to, to try to get more
assistance with things for the baby. Not financial assistance, mind
you, but things like diapers, formula, baby clothes, car seat, etc.
Try looking in the blue pages of your phone book for any Emergency
Pregnancy programs.
Here in Hamilton, there is a place called BirthRight, and they connect
expectant mothers with helpful programs. As well, if your daughter is
a teenager, (mine was 18 when she had her baby) the doctor she sees,
or in my daughter's case, the hospital she goes to for her check-ups
will probably want a social worker to speak to her about supports;
family support, is the baby's father going to stay in the picture,
where will she live, etc.
I couldn't afford to even have my daughter take Lamaze classes,
because they cost so much, and there was no subsidy for any of the
classes.
I wish you and your daughter luck, and congratulations! Grand-
children are such a blessing. Even though I'm a grand-mother at 37,
and still cannot believe it some days, I love my grand-daughter to
death and cannot imagine my life without her now.

Take care,
Christine

dont they have to back pay for this, i think they do, make sure you ask and call your local ombudsman's office and tell them of your daughters and grandaughters situation, they will act on her behalf to get the baby some benefits.

Yes, I do believe that once OW receives proper "proof" that my grand-
daughter does indeed "exist", they will have to make her benefits
retroactive to the time that my daughter and granddaughter started
living with the baby's father. However, I won't be surprized if they
take as long as possible to pay those benefits out!
