Hi everyone.

After almost 2 years my mom was finally accepted by ODSP. She is
presently receiving Ontario Works but it has been more than a month
now since she's received her acceptance letter but her file is still
in the transfer mode from OW to ODSP. Have any of you done this before
- how long did you have to wait. Also, we haven't been getting clear
answers on retroactive. Her lawyer said she should get it from when
she applied almost 2 years ago - have any of you had this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We seem to be getting 1 answer
from OW and another from ODSP. I guess the good news is that she has
been deemed a person with a disability. Awful isn't it - being glad
about that? She has been sick for the past 11 years so let's say we're
getting anxious to seeing a little extra money. 9 of those years I
actually supported her. She only started receiving Ontario works a
tiny bit ago.

Hope to get lots of input from people who have been there.

You should get a cheque from ODSP the end of the next month after
approval.
OW cheques are for the month ahead, so if you got a July cheque it
would have come from OW the end of June.
ODSP pays for August, but their cheques don't come until the end of
the month, so meanwhile OW will pay you once more at the end of July,
but it gets deducted from your retroactive payment, which will be the
difference between what OW gave you and what ODSP would have given
you.
If you call the ODSP office and inquire about your retroactive cheque
they will sometimes make an appoitment and give it to you in person
and you can sign your Rights and Responsibilities form and get on with
your financial planning.

I believe it's twice a year unless you have extended dental coverage (which you can get if your
medical condition or medications cause dental problems). If you call any dentist's office, they
could tell you for sure. I think the basic exam is only covered every 9 months, once again unless
you have the extended coverage.

It is impolite (and confusing) to barge into a discussion with an
unrelated subject - you should start your own topic.

Teeth cleaning and checkup is covered every nine months. Be careful
here - teeth POLISHING is not covered.

To actually ANSWER THE QUESTION ASKED, it usually takes a couple of
months for the transfer to occur. OW has to wait until ODSP (having
been notified by the DAU of the acceptance) requests the files. (ODSP
and OW have to synchronize the termination of OW payments and the
commencement of ODSP payments.) Sometimes it's faster, sometimes even
slower.

If she was on OW at the time she applied, her ODSP is retroactive to
the start of the month following her COMPLETED application; otherwise
it is the precise date that ODSP (DAU) 'received' her completed
application. The OW payments made during the overlap will be deducted
from the retroactive payment, with the exception of the first month of
overlap. This 'compensates' for the fact that her FIRST 'regular'
ODSP payment (at the end of the month) will have her LAST OW payment
(at the start that month) deducted and will be quite small. She must
make sure to 'hold on' to enough of her retroactive payment to cover
this shortfall
