I am wondering for anyone who is on ODSP will continue to keep their
current Driver's License and pay the $75 for 5 years. I heard the
price will go up later on this year or is it next year. I forget. Did
anyone get a Ontario Photo ID yet?

There is 2 other people I know who are on ODSP and have decided to
give up their license as they can't afford the $75. They don't have a
car and can't afford the insurance and the upkeep and gas, etc.

My mom has kept current Driver's License for so many years. She has
not drove for over 30 plus years. She was undecided to keep or give up
her license. I was with her today at the Service Ontario to get her
OHIP and Driver's License renewed. At the counter, I asked the lady if
there was Ontario Photo ID my mom can have and surrendered her
Driver's License. Sure, no problem. So she got rid of her license and
got the Photo ID card. This new ID card is $35 for 5 years. She saved
$40 bucks. My mom was so glad I was with her about this new ID card.
She never knew there was such a thing like that.

I asked at the counter what ID do I need if I wanted one for myself.
The lady said all I need is my birth certificate and OHIP card. I go
"really", that is not what the Service Ontario website said where you
find out what documents to bring to get a Photo ID. The lady said
don't pay attention to what it says, as most of the information is
wrong. Needless to say, I found out I had to bring my marriage
certificate to show proof because of my maiden and married names are
not the same.

Has anyone gotten the Ontario Photo ID? I am just curious.

Lorene,

I'm keeping mine because it's cheaper than buying a passport to go over
the border to the US for Toastmaster related things. I paid the extra
$40 to get the enhanced driver's license.

It's only been 2 years since I last drove so I'm hoping to one day do
that again too. It is expensive, but once paid for, they're good for 6
years. When you factor the cost out over time, the cost doesn't seem
quite as bad.

Lorene,
I would suggest if somebody has a driver's licence,
NOT to give it up ... I had mine surrendered due to
medical conditions and I had so much of a hard time
with everything in this region.  I know if I still had my
driver's license, I probably would be much better off
financially, even working in a job in Hamilton if not here.
But we did get the Ontario Photo Card, which is good
as it is equivalent to a driver's license for ID purposes.

Even if you don't have a car but have a driver's license,
there are programs like Autoshare and Zipcar in various
regions, which ours will soon become one, where people
can give up their car and only use their cars when you
absolutely need a car.

Like others who have posted about having to use only stores that provide scooters, I am in the same situation.
Readers should note: **Canadian Tire** will only release a scooter if you have a DRIVERS LICENSE and credit card.
They keep the license until you return the scooter, but will waive the credit card requirement.

How ironic that someone with a medical condition (i.e. LESS likely to HAVE a license) can only get the use of a mobility device IF they HAVE a license!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can either login to Service Ontario website -
http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/ONT04_020859.html and
click on the list of locations where you live or look in the phone
directory under Service Ontario where you live. I

I got mine done at the Service Ontario where they do OHIP, Driver's
License and Ontario ID cards all in one floor. am also sure they
issue vehicle stickers too. I could be wrong. It is also the same
building as where ODSP is on 217 York Street, London. ODSP is on 3rd.

There is a Probation dept for young offenders on the 3rd floor. I am
not too clear what is on the 2nd and 4th floor. I never looked at the
board closely at the front lobby.

For anyone wanting to know more about Ontario Photo ID, you can look
at the Service Ontario website for any questions/answers found there.

Angela, you may be right about not giving up driver's license for
other people who need it for work purposes, even if they don't have a
vehicle. I can understand your point of view.

My mom is going on 69 this summer. She is too old for work. So she
does not need the license anymore. That I can understand for her. I
was concerned about lack of ID purposes. That is why I managed to
convince her to get the Ontario Photo ID should she need one in the
future if anyone asks.

As for me, I never had a driver's license. I did have beginner's for
one year. I never pursued to continue on to get driver's license many
years ago. I know I should have when I was much younger. I am nearly
50 next year. So I had applied for Ontario Photo ID yesterday in case
I need it for ID purposes. I don;t have much ID on me. You can't show
your SIN. And SIN cards will disappeared in less than couple years.
You can or can not show your birth certificate either because last
name is different than your maiden name. How would anyone know you are
who you are, even if your first name is the same on the card? I do
have a high school ID card with my picture on it. It shows my maiden
name. I don't have LCBO, I mean Age of Majority card, nor do I have a
passport. I am not even Native to have a First Nations ID card either.
You are not allowed to show your OHIP card with your picture and
signature on it. I can't understand why you can't. They are saying in
other provinces are allowed to show their health cards with picture on
it, but why not Ontario? It don't make sense to me.

Few years ago, I had a heck of a time opening a bank account at
President's Choice due to lack of ID and my poor credit history.
President's Choice said they will open one for me. Any money deposit
in my account is accessible for me to take cash out or pay bills. But
any money I have or have cheques to be deposit will be put on hold for
7 days. (I have 3 more years to go before I can start fresh with
building credit history.)

I kept my Canada Trust bank account just for cashing cheques only and
also for depositing coins in their wrappers to be deposit into Canada
Trust bank account for emergenices or special occasions. Of course I
pay the monthly service fee of $3.95 just to keep my account open.
Sure I can deposit cheques into my President's Choice account, but
they will be put on hold for 7 days.

Last week while at Valumart, a man who was by the door asking if I was
interested in applying for President's Choice credit card and he would
give out the $5 voucher to be used toward paying for groceries. I told
him that I could not and told him the reason why. He said I don't see
why I can try apply for one. He asked me if I have my ID including
driver's license. I told him no I don't. Darn it - there goes the $5
voucher.

I have no idea what is Zipcar or Autoshare. Never heard of them.

I would not leave myself in a place where I would not be able to drive, notwithstanding there are days I cannot, am not able to.
I have my driver's license,
someone wrecked my car,
but I still then, with a driver's license, am still able to get behind the wheel and drive if/when needed to
and maybe one day, I will be able to have a car, or use of one.
I have my scooter rite now.
so far, we don't need licences, but there are many municipalities that are looking into licensing the drivers.
the less wreckless we are with the pedestrians and on the road, the longer we may be able to use our scooters without need of licenses for that too!!
If one does not drive, needless to say, we all need forms of identificaton, and the ontario card is almost imperative for most businesses if a driver's license cannot be shown.
thanks

Thanks,
I had no idea one could not have photo id AND a drivers license.
My biggest concern is renewing OHIP CARDS as the id requirements (3 separate classes) are almost impossible to fulfill. Without a drivers license I could not have renewed my card last time!

oh crap....what does it take to renew your OHIP card? i am still used to being in ottawa where there are service ontario places all over and you can access necessary records rather fast.

as for surrendering ID, never do it. unless there is a destroy sticker on ANY photo ID keep it and you can likely use it as photo ID at any time regardless of expiration.  my passport was lapsed by 10 years and i still used it as photo ID...yes i even crossed the border at DETROIT tunnel with it a few times.

for those who do not know, the detroit crossing is completely military at this point.  they turn away people who LIVE in detroit that have come into windsor in their own cars or on the bus if they do not like the pants you are wearing.  its ridiculous.

we should be issued this ontario ID at no cost.

I don't have a license, and never have. I do make sure to keep a
valid passport for identification purposes, though. Costs a bit, but
worth it. Easier to travel with, even within the country. With my
mother being 96, I don't want to be messing around trying to get
various pieces of ID up together in order to travel out to BC should
anything happen to her and I need to go out there in a hurry. I have
one of the older red and white OHIP cards, which doesn't expire, as
does my daughter, so no cost there.

Gilbert, that seems strange that they are insistent on only accepting
a driver's license for use of a scooter. Where I work, I sometimes
need to lend out building access keys to people who have rented our
facility. We insist on a piece of ID to hang on to until they return
it, but it doesn't have to be a driver's license (although we do
prefer it) - just something of value with their name on it, like a
credit card, SIN card or birth certificate. We won't take a library
card or a school card.

The whole border security thing is such a laugh,  how much of the border in Manitoba, New Brunswick etc, is simply a fence or a clear cut in the bush and you can just walk across. Many years ago I drove from New Brunswick into Maine, the only indicatation I had enetered the US was a sign posted that said "Please report to US customs in Bangor Maine" LOL

Guess they are assuming terrorist and drug dealers havent figured this one out yet.

Lorene,
... driving is not just for work purposes.  There are tons of
places in my own region that I have *never* been to because
the bus doesn't go there.  Many activities, even community
events, are held only where people can drive to.  Our "new"
pool/library/community centre, built in the centre north
end is inaccessible by bus on evenings and weekends.  If
you want to attend family functions, basically you have to
drive to get there, unless somebody is able and willing to
take you.  You find out quickly what a non life you have
by not being able to drive, even if you don't need or are
able to work.

Autoshare and Zipcare are carsharing organizations.  You
pay a few hundred dollars a YEAR ($300 - $400) to join,
and when you take out a car it is only a few dollars a day,
including gas.  This is great for people that don't want to
pay insurance, rising gas costs and other fees just to keep
a car they are using less and less.  I personally would give
my right arm to get my license - because my life is really
boring and severely limited because of my inability to get
around, even if the activity sponsored is no charge.

As for your mother, if she is medically unable to drive, that
is one thing, but many people still do well into their senior
years without a problem.

Aline, prior to the photo card, I have had to occasionally threaten folks
with a legal suit if they chose to deny me service for lacking the
so called correct identification.  I am also saying, "I didn't know that
your driving ability had anything to do with your identification;
driver's licenses can be forged too".  They nevertheless almost always
chose to provide the service, but hopefully there will be less stress
with the new Ontario Photo Card.  They used to wonder why I don't
get a passport.  I have to look at them and say I DON'T DRIVE, WHY
WOULD I BE GOING OVER THE BORDER FOR ANY REASON?
If I ever got a job where I needed to travel over the border, then I would.
Until then, there's nothing of interest to me, because I can't get there
anyways without a car.

Niagara and Kingston both. Buses do go to some of these entertainment or sports places, but transit hours are not great and for many, it will take over and hour to get there. Also the wheelchair accessible route was removed. God knows why.

So much for taking advantage of that city subsidy for sports and entertainment; the same one you get with the subsidized bus pass that access bus passengers can't use.

We must live in twin cities (attitude wise) at least.
