Hi Guys,

I just found the most wonderful resource.

Free Food Voucher - $50.00 to those in need
St. Vincent DiPaul Society - Oshawa Office
Ziggy
905-431-1796

I am not sure what exact area they service, however, they have offices
throughout Ontario.

Good Luck!

If there is no Vincent de Paul Society where you live, call any
Catholic church and see if they give out food vouchers. You do not
have to be Catholic. They give out $35 for a single person.

I'd like to add . in the south end of oshawa you DO NOT receive $50 .... you receive only $20 ... because of the amount of people  that are in need

The 'vouchers' they give out are aquired through church donations .. the amount differs depending on the 'prosperousness' of the affiliated church .... They do not all 'deliver' to your home and the ones that do are checking to see that you are in fact 'in need' .. and they have the volunteers to be able to visit .... You have to provide proof of 'neediness' ie: monthly ODSP or Welfare stub so PLEASE dont let people think they are ALL going to receive $50 or $35 from them  I believe there is also a limit of either once a month OR once every two months ...... Also if you accept help from St Vincent DePaul ... you may NOT accept help from any other source at the same time . ................... They will also help at Christmas in the more afluent areas.

I called my St. Vincent De Paul for the very same reason, to see about a grocery voucher. The director spoke to me on the phone and said " we don't give out food or vouchers here, but if you call...(she named a local nearby church).. they can help you out."

So it would seem, so far, that the process is such that, in Ottawa anyway, they refer you to a local church, and the church most likely takes care of you. I will be making the call to the church and will report back to the group on how I made out. It's my hope that my experience will make it easier and less daunting for others to do.

Best to all, and happy cheque day soon!

St. Vincent DePaul delivered a $50 food voucher today. It is good only
at 2 specific grocery stores.

They did not ask for I.D. or proof of income. They had me sign a form,
that was it.

This is a very good organization in my books.

I hope you all can get a food voucher if you need one.

Vincent de Paul Society referred to a nearby Catholic Church in
London. You call the church office in the daytime business hours. They
take your name and address and tell you when the person will show up
at your place on what day and time. I was given $40 dollars. I can
call them again in 3 months time and get another voucher. Then again
in another 3 months. Then the last one would just before Xmas, where I
place an order to get a Xmas Hamper. You have to time it just right by
looking at the calendar and mark the dates to call the church
including the Xmas Hamper. I have had no problems for the last 4 years
with the Catholic Church. Actually it was $35 every 3 months for 3
years, then last year, it went up to $40 every 3 months and that is
for a single person. Oh yeah, I nearly forgot, they pay for my bus
fare, either a bus ticket or cash, to get to the grocery store and
back just to get my groceries. There was just a choice of 2 grocery
stores that take vouchers - Valumart or Price Choppers.

I was also told by the church people when they give out the vouchers,
there has been some dishonest people who would photocopy the vouchers
and get more groceries that they are not allowed. They just cut them
the dishonest people out of the voucher program.

Whereas I lived in a different part of the city many years ago,
another Catholic Church people would come to my townhouse, they do ask
to see your rent receipts, your hydro bill, cable bill and phone bill
plus a drug card, they recorded all that down on their file.

After I moved to an apt where I am to this day, I was surprised that I
was given a voucher without having them ask me for proof of income. I
told them them where I used to live and was asked these questions. The
church people were so surprised that they said that practice should
not be allowed, except for proof of income and how many is in the
family by providing the drug card or birth certificates. I was not
asked for my proof of income at all.

That's why the food cards are better and can be used in most food stores that participate. Less chance of cheating the church.

Take care,
Frank.

I asked St Vincent de Pauls for help once in London. A man and a woman
showed up and they had an argument right in front of me as to whether
or not I was entitled to any help from them because I make mortgage
payments instead of rent.
