Hello,

I was just resently told by friend that I can obtain matress from
Sleep Country Canada for free if I'm on ODSP ( I live in Toronto).
They have some program for this, anyone know more details about this.
I'm in need of a new matress that in better shape then what my friend
gave me, it's starting to aware out now after so many years of use.

I guess you wouldn't need to obtain a receipt. I didn't know about
this program.

I bought mine last Aug. over the phone and they said head office
would main me a receipt. So 3 months later, I had a chance after
several phone calls to the local store, I called head office and had
a receipt.

I just happened that week I happened to pass the store I bought it
from. I went in and said, I'm here to pick up the receipt for my
mattress I bought 3 months ago.

Probably too late now.... for me to reimburst.

Hi,
I never heard of this program either.  Last year,
I asked around about something like this; nobody
knew anything about it, although I did go to
Sleep Country and purchased a bed for my daughter,
but had to pay for it.  Luckily the prices were pretty
reasonable.

Sleep Country does have a program to donate USED mattresses to people.
They pick up the old mattress when they deliver a new bed but I have
no idea how you actually get on their list. The only person I know of
who got a bed this way had to arrange delivery at his own expense.

With all the bedbugs in Toronto these days I would not take a used
mattress under any circumstances myself.

Wouldn't Sleep Country have the obligation to make sure they aren't donating infected beds?

I got one from them, a King memory foam bed, it was memory foam all
the way through. It was a floor model, the store sent it back because
it had a ripped thread, it was brand new, less than three months old.
It came with a new split boxspring. I was told the trick is to ask for
a king bed because people dont usually donate those so the king beds
are all store models that have come back

I wouldn't either, Darlene. The *only* way I'd consider it is if I had no other option and I knew the people who had the bed and knew they were clean. Otherwise, I'd sleep on the floor first (and I have done that).

There really should be more help with things like new beds - people with back problems have to have a decent bed and the good ones are not cheap.

In Ottawa it is through 'Essential Health' not ODSP. You probably have
a similar agency in TO. But ODSP certainly does not volunteer any
info.

I got a new matress through Essential Health services (Ottawa). But I
wound up on the evening news, as instead of proper underneath slip
cover, the company had used "Bud Light' beer cartons as padding. It
was not sleep country. The new RO sent a reporter and camera man, the
beer cartons showed up really well on the news. The news cast ended
with the comment made to the reporter that 'she got the standard
welfare bed'. What an insult. I had to throw it out, and my Dad bought
me a good bed.

I think for used mattresses they fumigate them, but I would not take a
used one.

Here in Ottawa I think they give them away on certain days> You take
a number and they start passing out the used mattress. ' I went with
a friend to pick up a mattress and they had quite a few and there were
a lot of people waiting. Maybe call sleep country to get
details..... personally I would get a new one even if it's
cheap ....its better than bedbugs in you home.
