Would this be worth while lobbying for, here in Ontario for some Ontario Works (OW) and Ontario Disability Support Program Recipients?

SafeLink Wireless is a government supported program that provides a free cell phone and airtime each month for income-eligible customers.

Hi Ron,
I'd certainly be in favour of it. I think it's a great idea. For those on OW looking for work, it would be a way for employers to reach people. Also, good for those on ODSP if they need to get hold of a doctor right away.

Pity.

Since ODSP doesnt consider a phone a neccesity, or at least I cant claim it
as an expense with them, Its not real likely that this idea is gonna fly, I
tried to claim I needed a land phone in case I needed to call an ambulance
or call in a fire and was told its not an allowable housing expense.

You would be the perfect candidate for this free phone.
Who would deny a disabled person this phone for emergency and other purposes when you were not near a phone?

This is obviously a smart business idea from this company.
How much money will they make when people buy a card for extra personal minutes. They are reaching a market that they, for the most part haven't tapped into as of yet.

hi all
I run a non profit and until recently it was being run by what I
thought was an honest board member in Thunder Bay
well it turns out she was having people apply to OW for volunteer
status and benefits AND last week a worker from the odsp in thunder
bay contacted me to ask if a volunteer I had was still in need of her
cell phone,,,
apparently they had been paying a cell phone bill for a year and
supplied the cell phone...I am going there next month to find out how
much damage was done and now have to change the name and do so much
work to fix this mess but the moral of the story is...they paid for
the phone and the first yr contract...they are also on the hook for
paying for the next 2 yrs...

the reason I brought it up was because at one of my reviews I tried to claim my phone as an expense along with taxes, insurance etc, and was told by the worker unless a phone was neccessary for door security as in some apartment buildings it was not an allowable expense, was I given misinformation?

Given the dangerous areas many are forced to live in (e.g. affordable) it seems entirely appropriate to me that cell phones  and some air time be provided to odsp'ers.  Women living in shelters are given these for their 911 calls in case they find themselves at risk again (restraining orders seem to do little).
Many people give up perfectly good relatively new phones for transport to the Caribbean and overseas when they get their new toy (e.g. Blackberry or Apple phone).  I would be thrilled with one and there are many out there - perhaps one of the major wireless providers could use the good publicity in providing these??

Thanks for listening,
Lynx

this is something I forgot...if your security is attached to the cable/
phone for building security you are suppose to be able to claim the
basic bill as a necessity...I had a few clients some years ago that I
got this for....

I just signed up for this yesterday http://www.icall.com/desktop/ .Now
I have voicemail forwarded to my inbox.
You can also get a free phone number here www.freephoneline.ca but
you'll need a working phone number to
get it.They phone to verify your account. Not as good as a cell phone
but pretty good for free.

Getting a cell phone would be no good for me as I am hearing impaired.
Also it would not work where I live in a secured apt building. You can
only use it to talk to anyone you like in your apt but it would not
work if someone buzzes you from the front lobby. You can't talk or let
the person in.

I don't want to get stuck with 2 phone bills - one from Bell and the
other for cell phone. I can't afford that. It is bad enough now that
Rogers cable bill I got that they are telling me the rates are going
up again as of June 1st.

I tried to get ODSP to pay for my phone service since I live in
secured apt building. They told me they don't pay. I looked at my
rental lease and there is no mention of phone service you need for the
front door lobby.
