Still waiting for my deposit - I called CIBC and they said it could take up to 6 pm tonight - but usually it is in by about 3 or 4 a.m.

Anyone else with CIBC not getting their deposit yet or is it just me?

Hope

Did you get your deposit?

I am pretty sure banks treat social assistance payments as higher priority than payroll and other deposits.

I hope that you were not waiting to buy food or pay a bill.

If you still didn't get it, you need to go down to the ODSP office first thing Monday morning and speak to whoever is at the front desk.  Calling your worker will not be enough.

I'm with President's Choice Financial.  There was one time a payroll deposit was late for me as the bank was having issues with deposits but that was years ago and it was payroll.

Good luck.

President's Choice... The best. I save a lot of money and service charges by using them. I've also got free food.

Me, too, Presidents Choice. On Friday morning around 10 am. I went to CIBC to withdraw some money out. All the ODSP money was in. And yes, Louise, I save a lot of money on service charges. I will save all my points towards Xmas so I can cash in for free groceries.

In your opinion
How difficult would it be to switch from my TD account over to Presidents choice, because of direct deposit from ODSP
Plus paying bills online.
With all the problems that came from the ODSP  Sams Issue, would it just srcrew things up more if I switched over.

I used to use PC but I now use Tangerine (a Scotiabank company, used to be Ing Direct.)  I not only don't pay any bank fees but I get a free $250 overdraft without credit check (no interest charged) and I get various amounts of bonus money for referrals, for signing up my first direct deposit, for starting a savings account, etc. Etc.  They also have 24/7 customer service hours.

Benjer,

You ask a very brave question… and I don’t have a clue how to answer it in a way that might not incriminate myself… I’m kidding. I’ll give it my best shot.

The first thing I’d do is ask your worker at ODSP how to go about it.

Once you get an answer from the worker, open the PC Account and then take the account number to ODSP. You may have to sign something, but the worker should tell you that.

When I switched from TD to President’s Choice years ago, making the switch was very easy. However, seeing as the systems are becoming much more complex these days, I’d suggest putting in some self-protections as well.

What I mean by that is open the PC Account, give the account number to ODSP, and then don’t close the TD Account until you see the money start to be deposited there. It might mean carrying two bank accounts for awhile, but if your worker and your housing provider, if you have one, knows about the existence of two accounts it won’t be a problem. You’ll just be asked to sign another form to give the government carte blanc permission to snoop.

Don’t forget to make the switch with Revenue Canada as well (if you’re getting direct deposit of the HST, etc.).

When things are confirmed to be clearing, then close the TD Account. Be sure to get a signed form from the bank to prove it and then share the copy with ODSP and, if necessary, housing.

This latter advice comes based on a bad experience with housing when I made the switch a long time ago. I told them the second account was closed, but they failed to properly note it. It was hard to get the proof that stated the account had been closed 6 months after the fact, when housing started their investigation.

While you’re carrying the two accounts you can change your service charge plan with TD to a cheap one (minimal number of transactions allowed per month) and at least start saving on the service charge fee right away. It might mean withdrawing most of your ODSP deposit from TD, if it happens to land there, and then depositing it into the President’s Choice account, but at least it will speed up the pace of when you’ll start to see the savings on banking fees.

Good luck.

I f I remember correctly, I opened my PC account almost 7 years ago, I didn't have much ID, not even driver's license. But they accept me anyways. I was given a debit card and a set of blank cheques. I took some blank cheques and mark it "VOID" across. I drop one off to ODSP, and other places where my bills come off my bank account, except for Rogers Cable. I don't trust them not after they pulled a dirty trick on me. I just pay Rogers either online or to any CIBC to use ATM machine to pay bills. You can use CIBC ATM machine any time. It is free of charge. Oh yeah, send a blank cheque to Revenue Canada so that your tax credits like tax refunds, GST and OTB are switched over to PC.

Be aware to keep your present bank account open for at least 2 months to make sure everything has been transferred over to PC account. Then you can go ahead and close the TD account.

You can PC debit card to pay for your groceries at any PC grocery store, like Loblaws, Superstore, No Frills and Valumart. Don't pay anything in cash, only debit. You get points shown on your grocery bill. Sometimes there are bonus points too. If you use your black PC bags, make sure the cashier sees them and how many you have, so that the points of using the bags can added to your grocery bill. One black bag equals 100 ponts.

For a first time customer to cash in points to get free groceries, you have to accumulate 20 thousand points. After than, it is 10 thousand. You can also use the points to buy something other than food, like housewares or certain appliances like coffee maker, toaster, etc.

It is not so difficult to switch accounts in different banks if you are not happy with your present bank.

Forgot to mention....

Told my worker that I would have to borrow the rent and grocery money from a friend to tide me over and was promptly advised that this would be considered 'income' and I'd have to report it for next month.....  you gotta be kidding me!

Sigh

Well after waiting and waiting and hearing that everyone else got their deposits, I called my worker (again!)....

The system 'burped' apparently - and somehow my OLD (closed) bank account was in the system - so they sent the funds to a dead account.

Of course, the system shows that the transfer was completed - so I had to race to the old bank, get a letter from the manager attesting to the fact that the account was closed and the deposit wasn't in the account, and fax it to the worker, who THEN stated that they had to wait for their system to tell them that the deposit was rejected and THEN they could issue a replacement check - perhaps Monday or Tuesday this would happen.

In the meantime, I have no money for food, can't pay my rent (late payment of $25 a day for that).... the worker can't do a manual check, they don't do manual checks any more so I have to wait for the system to spurt one out.... and no, there's just nothing they can do at their end.

It's THEIR glitch - she can't figure out why suddenly the old account showed up for the direct deposit, and terribly sorry etc etc etc....

I suggested doing an 'overpayment' and then reducing the 'overpayment' by the same amount when they got notified that the deposit had been rejected but I guess that idea was just too damned simple for them to grasp...

Tempted to say to hell with checks and direct deposit and ask them for one of those prepaid card things - but I'm afraid they'd screw that up as well.

Fortunately I only have 2 more months of this and then I am declared 'old' by the government and start CPP and OAS etc etc etc - so for the next 2 months I am dinging ODSP for everything I can think of - get my dentures relined, get new glasses, get orthopedic shoes.... anything else anyone can think of, please chime in :-)

I worked for over 35 years and paid taxes all that time - I intend to get back SOME of what I've put into the system over the years.

TD has easyweb and bills can be paid, direct deposit, everything else and your service fees are down if you choose
to do all your banking online.

Send this story to Go Public please.

It's time these burps get exposed and, worse, the severe negative repercussions you take to prevent homelessness.

I can't believe this garbage..... Claw back a loan as income to save yourself from a SAMS screw up?

Yes, there's a directive about loans, but humanity dictates that common sense should be used. Here's the link regarding the clawback of loans. Share this with the report as well. http://www.mcss.gov.on.ca/documents/en/mcss/social/directives/odsp/income_Support/5_10.pdf

If you want help contacting Go Public please ask me. I would be honoured to help to expose the abuse.

Louise
