you're quite welcome, tammy. remember the "only form of nutrition"
part that makes some doctors hesitant to sign the form.

oh, and tammy, not a problem at all. i have a great pharmacist and it
was less than a 5 minute conversation we had, one of the phone numbers
that i do remember, and really it took nothing out of me whatsoever to
place the call. i really hope you can get one signed!

yes, i'm sure all of us would like some of this for our families.
however, tammy specifically posted that she eats cereal only and then
ensure is the rest of her nutrition. please remember that the form
specifies that ensure has to be "the only source of nutrition".
~
i know that in the case of my son, it was something that really he did
need, but the doctor refused to sign the form as obviously my son
could eat other things. whether or not we could afford for my son to
eat other foods or not, for him to gain the ten pounds back and to
make sure that he wouldn't lose weight if he continued on the
medication did not matter.
~
obviously, if a terminally ill cancer patient who is still able to eat
cannot get her doctor to sign the form for ensure to be covered, i
think it's really a touch and go situation. if you have a doctor that
is willing to "bend the rules", great.
~
the other thing that was suggested to me when the doctor would not
sign the form for my son is that we try carnation instant breakfast
(the pre-made one, so you don't need milk in the house) as it is
cheaper than ensure.
~
i am not being negative, i am simply stating that you have to remember
that ensure is supposed to be your "only source of nutrition". can
you convince your doctor of that and have him sign off on the form?
~
i wish everyone the best in trying to get this form completed by their
doctor. just because it did not work out for me doesn't mean i
wouldn't like it to work out for other people, or i wouldn't have
called my pharmacist yesterday to get the information. when tammy
said that she only ate cereal and that the rest of her nutrition was
ensure, i thought that she may have a very good chance of getting it.
~
this would speak to the fact that we do not receive enough money for
*proper* food. this is also why i believe that there should be
something in place to make sure that we could all take vitamins and
supplements.

Hi Cindy,
If Tammy's only eating cereal, then she's not getting a balanced diet, she's not getting protein and other nutrients she needs.

Ensure is not designed to be a sole source of nutrition, it's meant to be a supplement. You're supposed to drink it as an addition to a balanced diet. Drinking Ensure alone is not going to keep you healthy. It could lead to other health problems you don't need. Your teeth need to chew to keep them healthy. I fail to see how this is going to help. Just my two cents' worth.
Bonnie

bonnie, i'm not clear why that statement is on the nutrition form that
people have to ask for to get ensure. it just is. and it is that
statement that prevents a lot of doctors from signing the form. i
agree with you, ensure, to me, would be a supplement. however, the
form is "out there" and perhaps this information may help someone.

Hi Cindy,

sole source of nutrition, it's meant to be a supplement.

I take the ensure considered a "meal replacement" There
are many different kinds of ensure available now, if
you check the bottles, there is a high protein,a extra calories,
kind and a kind for diabetics...others too and these are all
different types with above extras added, I have seen ensure
types labeled "supplement" but I buy the kind that says "meal
replacement"I also do tend to chew my cereal...lol so my
teeth are chewing..;o)My health is pretty bad and food just
turns my stomach, but head for the fridge grab and ensure
and down it and I am good till evening when I have cereal. Hope
this helps a bit...oh and the cost is great with no coverage
that's why i was looking for the form from cindy. I will
advise of the outcome of getting covereage for this. Have a
 good day sincerely Tammy

tammy, i'm really rooting for you on this one! i'm simply responding
to other posts as they're made. it's the form that has "only source
of nutrition" on it, not something i, personally, can change, but
again, something that makes some doctors hesitant to sign it. i think
it's a matter of who your doctor is and how well you present your case
to him/her.
~
as i've already posted here, i believe that we should all be getting
something for vitamins and supplements. and if there would be concern
about people scamming $ and not spending it on vitamins and
supplements, i do believe they could have another system put into
place, you know? but that's just something that blipped into my brain
and certainly something that nothing is going to be done about.
~
off topic, so apologies. but the odsp drug plan does not cover
antihistamines. all 3 of us in the house have severe environmental
allergies (and my son has the peanut allergy as well). i buy the
cheapest antihistamine i can buy, a generic version of chlortripolon
for about $14 for the month. last week, my daughter went into the
doctor to see about this horrid cough she has and the nurse
practitioner told her that the antihistamine she is taking is not
working for her. it is an old school antihistamine. but the thing
is, with 3 of us taking one daily, i certainly can't afford what the
nurse p. advised, which was reactine. so on my "to do" list now is to
see if i can get my family doctor to sample me on that.
~
i had taken my son to the allergist last week and i carry a very small
purse. i told him that he should have reminded me where we were going
and i would have taken a bigger purse. the allergist's office had a
ton of samples in there. but then, when the allergist-in-training had
to give my son an antihistamine to counteract the testing (his arms
were a mess), he took one from one of the sample boxes and then very
reluctantly gave us the box with the one remaining tablet of aerius.
so, i wasn't in the position to ask him if we could have samples of
anything else. meanwhile, he had samples in there of everything that
would make an environmental allergy sufferer feel as though they had
gone to heaven (well, that is a bit extreme and dramatic). nasal
gels, nasal sprays, eye drops, all different kinds of the new
antihistamines but again, when he was so reluctant about allowing my
son to keep the one extra tablet from a two pack sample pack, i
thought, no can't ask him, will have to ask the family doctor.
~
my previous family doctor, he actually stockpiled all of the samples
he received in a room that was full of samples and NEVER gave any
out. i don't *get* it.
~
however, there are a lot of things i don't *get*.
~
at any rate, tammy, i am really rooting for you on this one.

I have a necrotic (deadening) tooth which is extremely painful - all they will do under ODSP is yank it and it is the only one remaining for chewing on the left side.  I will be going on a pureed and liquid diet until I am off ODSP - you can't imagine (or maybe you can) the frustration of so much pain and no help

Take care,
Lynx
