I've Googled and I've found some general information on dental
benefits with ODSP, but nothing specific. I just received a letter
saying that I've been approved to receive ODSP and will be transfering
from Ontario Works.

Can anyone give me some more detailed information on how the dental
benefits work and what they cover?

Ontario Works covers $600 per calendar year for basic dental,
including x-rays, fillings, root canals, etc. I don't know if that
would include routine cleanings? I'm also wondering if there is an
amount limit or if you take your dental card to the participating
dentist and get what work you need done?

Thanks for any information you can offer!

It's not much different for ODSP actually.

Sure. Used to be every six months. Now let's make it every NINE months.

Take your dental card with you to the dentist and inform them of it.
Ahead of time, preferably. They should be able to deal with it from there.
I wish it would cover braces as well but I ask too much I suppose.

I used to go every 9 months, for me in my case, it is every 6 months
starting from a year ago because I have diabetes.
They do every cleaning for about 30-45 minutes every 6 months every
visit and xrays once a year. I have been going to the same dental
office for almost 10 years and I like their professional manner and
respect towards me.

to the original poster, may i ask where you got the information about
dental coverage while on ontario works? because i can tell you, from
my experience, that i did not have that kind of coverage when on
ontario works. they would not pay for a root canal or i would not be
sitting here toothless right now. they would not pay for cleanings.
i have a friend on ow and all of his teeth are rotting due to his pain
medication and he can not see a dentist unless it is an emergency.
so, if there are directives that show me differently, i wouldn't mind
taking a look at them.

i was very pleasantly surprised to find out FROM THIS GROUP, that i
even had a dental plan on odsp. and that it was quite a bit better
than the plan i had on ontario works. i got the name of a dentist
from a friend, called and asked if he was taking new patients and if
he was taking clients on odsp and yes yes yes, he was and i have now
begun the process for both myself and my two children of going in and
getting things done! and bless, he treats me as if i've walked in
with the best dental plan in the world!

to the person who spoke about braces. my son needs braces and of
course, they're not covered. my dentist told me that if you go to u
of t, depending on how severe the problem is, you can get braces for
$1400, $700 down and $100 a month. of course, i don't even have that,
but i thought i would pass the information on in case it may be of
benefit to someone. if the problem is more difficult, the price of
the braces does go up at u of t.

I got this information on OW dental benefits from my case worker. I
went to the dentist in 2009 and had dental work done. I need about
$4,000 worth of work done in total, but was able to get $600 dollars
worth. I had a root canal and tri-surface complicated filling done on
one of my teeth. As of January 2010 I will be eligible again, as my
benefits go by calendar year. I know that things work a little
differently from place to place, as I live in Kingston, ON, and this
is where I had $600 available for dental work, and when I was in
Ottawa, ON I merely went to a dental clinic specifically for those on
social services, and got the work work done (I had a tooth extracted
because it had crumbled and was abscessed).

As for the service you have received on ODSP, my main question is
whether there is a limit to the amount of work or the cost of work you
can get done within a given time period. Or can you take your dental
card in to your dentist at any given appointment and have the work
billed to ODSP's insurance provider?
