My husband required the use of an ambulance in March. We've received a bill for 45 dollars. Is this something odsp will cover or reimburse?

If you tell the hospital and show your pay stub for the month, they
should right it off. You can phone the hospital and ask what the
procedure is!

My husband was in an accident while at work about 2 years ago and was taken to the hospital by ambulance, ODSP would not pay the bill, the employer refused to pay the bill and when I went to the hospital asked them to reduce or absorb the bill because we were on ODSP and the hospital said no.  So at the end of the day we paid the bill :(

Hi Mona,
You're lucky it was only $45.00. When Kerre went to
the hospital, they charged us $50.00. Good luck with
that.
Bonnie

If you have paid it, request a paid up invoice from the hospital and
submit to ODSP and they will reimburse you. If not paid, send the
invoice and they will pay directly. Either way, make a copy as back-
up. Let the hospital accounting department know of your action in case
there is a delay in their getting reimbursed.

I did? No wait. Sorry. Mona is my wife's name.
Anyhow, go to where it says you have to pay the bill, and bring along proof
that you're on ODSP (drug card, direct deposit statement, etc) and they'll
waive the charges.

I have had to use an ambulance more than once. In one case I received
that same bill, all I had to do was to call the hospital and remind
them.

If this is something new - a first trip, you might have to fax a copy
of drug card as proof, but when at the hospital they should note down
you are on ODSP.

And if required by a doctor - he has to write a note (script) - ODSP
will cover the cost of private ambulance. But tell your worker first
you will be needing this and doing this. I did this last month when I
was at a convalescent centre and had to be taken to the hospital for x-
rays. Could not walk, etc. The ambulance person came and picked me up,
and the beauty of it was at the hospital I only waited 10 minutes
before being taken through.

Andrea,
Why didn't Worker's Compensation pay this bill?  They are supposed to ...

Thank you, everyone. I wasn't sure how to proceed with it. Now it's just
getting my husband over to the hospital. With him being the odsp recipient
in this house, it'd probably be better for him to handle it. At
least..that's what I've found over the years.

My mother told me to imagine the bill if they had sent him to Thunder Bay by
air ambulance! ouch..not a thought I enjoy.
I'm not complaining about the amount..considering that includes a trip to
and back from Thunder Bay for CT Scans. But my money is budgeted to the last
dollar each month and there just isn't room to squeeze this in.

Just like sending a letter to my wife. (But my pet name for her is
"Beautiful" or "Pretty Mona".)
You COULD try doing it yourself if you wish - if you have a current ODSP
stub including the drug or dental card with your name on it.
But don't quote me on that. My twisted logic is that if they can get their
accounts squared away they don't care if you or your husband shows up.
But again, I can't guarantee this. The ODSP is directed to me and I do all
the dealings. I think my wife's scared stiff of the guys in the office.
Because? Because they're government I suppose.
But since they don't make the rules, they only enforce them, I've learned
that if something goes wrong, it can be appealed so I forge ahead.

The reason we have air ambulance in nw ON is because it's much cheaper
than building new hospitals. If a land ambulance can't be dispatched,
because of distance, then air ambulance is dispatched. This is part of
a cost sharing with the federal government. ODSP is reimbursed, the
mandate is to provide medical services. Since our hosp. is 43km
distant they even pay my cab fare back home.
