Hello:

My child was just turned down by the ODA (Ontario Dental Association)
for braces. She has a 60% overbite, cannot chew a lot of foods, and
chokes. She receives ACSD (Assistance for Children with Severe
Disabilities) but they do not cover this I was told. I receive ODSP.
Has anyone else experienced this before? Is there any appeal route?

I thank you for any information you may provide.

the ASCD would only cover it IF her mouth issues are part of her
qualifing disabilty
Im not sure how to get braces through ODSP I know my dad got them for
my sister when I was a kid and he was on FBA though

May I inquire as to whether your child's overbite is the result of her
disability?  May I inquire as to what her disability, the reason that
I inquire is so I can see if there is other avenues that I may be
able to direct you? (I too once had a son that was very young and
severely challenge and there were services out there to assist him).

One of my kids has TMJ and impacted wisdom teeth...the GP said he
could referr him to the hospital to see an oral surgeon if the TMJ
causes him pain and interferrs with his ability to eat, sleep, work or
learn. See if you can get a medical referral rather then dental.

BJR,
I agree -- a medical referral to a dental surgeon that will do the service
in a hospital is a good idea for necessary dental surgery.  However, I
think the writer was asking about orthodontic work (e.g. braces).  To
purchase out of pocket, this can exceed $5,000 easily.  As a result
of my family not being able to afford braces for me, I still have
masticulation problems, but I've managed to compensate for these
issues over the years.  I am sure if there is a necessary medical
component (such as the braces being needed to compensate for
a congenital deformity or other problem related to a disability, ODSP
will likely cover it.  Otherwise, this person will probably have to go
the same way we have to fight to get dentures, starting at the
discretionary supports office, in regions where there is one.

When I was 18 years old, I had severely impacted wisdom teeth.
My mother was only on mother's allowance at the time and even
at that time, dentists were not covered to remove severely impacted
wisdom teeth.   My mother was referred for me to be seen by a
"Orthodontist Surgeon" at a local hospital and I was at Mississauga
General Hospital and my impacted wisdom teeth were removed under
a local anaesthetic.

So the person inquiring could see if they could get a referral yes to
a "orthodontic surgeon" at a local hospital.  Possibly braces could be
covered that way, if they are warranted, there are some agencies
out there that might help with the costs?
